About the Author
Born in 1952 in Rio de Janeiro, she is a Brazilian History professor at the University of Sao Paulo. Has received various awards for her work as historian such as the Jabuti, Brazilian Union of Writers, Manoel Bonfim, and Casa Grade Senzala and Cultural Personality of the Year awarded by the Brazilian Academy of Literature. Among the books published are: Published works: A história das mulheres no Brasil (The history of women in Brazil) (1997), A história das crianças no Brasil (The history of children in Brazil) (1999) and Corpo a corpo com a mulher - uma pequena história das transformações do corpo (body to body with the woman - a short history of the transformations of the body). She currently works as General Coordinator of Research, Publication and Dissemination at Arquivo Nacional (National Archives). Renato Pinto Venâncio was born in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, in 1961. Got his Ph. D. in Demography History at the University of Paris IV - Sorbonne (1993). He is an adjunct professor in the Department of History of Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, scientific consultant of CEDHAL (Center for Historical Studies of Demography of America) and researcher of CNPq. Published the book Famílias abandonadas: assistência à criança de camadas populares no Rio de Janeiro em Salvador - séculos XVIII e XIX (1999) (abandoned families: assistance to poor children in Rio de Janeiro and in Salvador - the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) (1999), and many chapters of books and articles in specialized magazines.
