5.0 out of 5 stars My all time favorite read-aloud!
This "oldie but goodie" shows how a brave and clever little girl outwits some pretty scary bad guys who inhabit the Yeller Belly Swamp. It's great fun to read with children and help them find the similarities to Red Ridinghood, Three Billy-Goats Gruff and the Uncle Remus stories. I'm glad it's still in print!

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective copy
This book was supposed to replace the worn copy that our four children and now our ten grandchildren loved. That book still has every page, but the binding is so worn out that it's more a stack of paper than a book.

When I bought this replacement there was nothing mentioned by the seller that this copy would have the binding completely up side down. Lisa Lou is...

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN AND EMPOWERING STORY FOR EVERYONE - ESPECIALLY GIRLS!, November 19, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp (Paperback)
This is my favorite childrens' book because it is about a teeny little Black girl living in a swamp who meets all kinds of weird and scary creatures and outwits them all! Every day she starts out with different a request from her momma, never doubts herself, takes off, meets obstacles, and ends up fulfilling her momma's request. The illustrations are wonderful! This story is about goal-setting, fearlessness, staying focused, using your brains instead of brawn and enjoying the fruits of victory. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK?!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "feel good" book for little girls (& big ones) everywhere!, December 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp (Paperback)
This is one of those books that makes you glad you're a girl! However, that's not to say that boys can't get a kick out of it too. Liza Lou is a strong and intelligent little girl. She's a good role model for little girls everywhere. I'm always looking for books that will make my little girls feel strong, and this is definitely high on the list. The best thing about it, is that it's just as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids. The imagination in the story telling is wonderful and humorous. And Mercer Mayer's illustrations are, as usual, outstanding!

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been searching for this book for years..., November 28, 2010
This review is from: Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp (Paperback)
It's crazy how my favorite memory of books as a child was this book. Whenever I think about how much I loved books and the library as a young person,I thought about this book. It was the juicy illustrations that I spent hundreds of hours enjoying again and again, and the story of this frail, tiny, innocent, but very brave & determined little girl. I could not remember the name of the book, and for many years I've tried to remember. I just had the bright idea (yes, i should have long ago) to Google the words to find the book. What did I Google? Anything I could remember.. flies, molasses, pancakes, monsters, swamp... yes, i know it had a swamp. I'll Google "childrens book swamp"... and there it was. On the top line at Amazon.com. Liza Lou and the Yeller Belly Swamp. How could I even forget that. How could I forget it was by Mercer Mayer? Shame on me. Anyway, I'm going to buy it now. I have wanted to find the book to give to someone. I hope she does not already have it, but i wanted to share my very favorite book of all time with her. She'll be 2 years old in a few weeks so she might be a little young for it now... but hopefully her mom will add it to her collection so she can discover it over and over someday and enjoy it as much as i did. Nothing wrong with all this technology nowadays...heck...it's how i just located my all time favorite childrens book. And Kindle's seem really cool for sure. I want one. (-: But... there's nothing nothing like the paper pages, printed words and wild illustrations of a beautiful book, and being surrounded in a library by thousands of stories and surprises every time you picked a new one. I hope we don't forget this. I don't have any children so I probably have no business saying this... but please don't please don't let books be forgotten by our future generations. Pass them on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excited to be reunited with Liza Lou!, February 6, 2010
This review is from: Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp (Paperback)
My elementary school teacher read this book to the class 30 years ago. My brother and I absolutely loved it! As little black kids, there weren't too many children's books with the protagonist being a person of color. I know it doesn't matter that much now, but back then a book like this caused much excitement. ALL little kids should experience this story of Supergirl Liza Lou. They will never forget it, and one day, let's say 30 years from now, they'll look it up and get excited all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, February 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Liza Lou And The Yeller Belly Swamp (Paperback)
Liza Lou and the Yellerbelly Swamp is a book that I read as a child. I still have my original copy, but recently purchased a used copy as mine had some missing pages. I can remember my Mom reading the book to me and using voices to portray the characters. I ordered Mom her own copy for Christmas. This is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars LIZA IS BRILLIANT!, August 25, 2001
By
I was in the library with my little cousin and ran into Liza Lou. I remember it being the most frequently read book between me and my two brothers growing up. The illustrations are brilliant and the story is everything an adventure should be for a little kid. But I'm not little anymore and I still love it! I read it to my friends at a New Year's party this past year; you would have thought they would have told me to quit being square but they were so into it! I'm so glad I found it here at Amazon and didn't have to resort to stealing it from the library!
