Product Description

There is no shame in liking a little extra padding around your bars. We've lost count of the number of pro bikes we've seen with double-wrapped bars, ready to tackle the spring classics. And for those who dislike wearing cycling gloves, a nicely padded handlebar is de rigueur. Lizard Skins DSP 2. 5 Handlebar Tape offers the same super grip that the 1. 8 variation does, but with the added comfort of 0. 8mm more padding. Now, 0. 8mm might not sound like a lot, and indeed Lizard Skins is careful not to give it a foamy, slightly blundering feel. It's just a whisper of extra padding, but it could make the difference between numb hands and all day comfort. The DSP 2. 5 Bar Tape shares the same high tech feel that their 1. 8 tape has, but with a different design pattern. In fact, if you take a close look, it resembles a file tread pattern like you might see on an all-weather road tire. It has more texture than other tapes we've used, and that's not by accident. The tape is intended to facilitate the movement of your hands form one position to the other, but there is no hint of unwanted slip, even with ungloved hands. Each roll of tape is 82 inches long, so you'll be able to wrap your bars without having to resort to overly pulling and stretching the tape. In fact, that is something that the folks at Lizard Skins are keen to caution you against doing. Be firm in pressing the tape into place and space it evenly, but don't pull at it too much because that will reduce its durability. Lizard Skins DSP 2. 5 Handlebar Tape comes in Black, Blue, Green, Orange, Red, and White. The package includes 2 rolls of tape, 2 bar-end plugs, and 2 finishing strips. Its claimed weight is only 50 grams per set, which means even weight-weenies can get the ultimate comfort without sacrificing a gram.

I've done one 84 mile ride since installing white Lizard Skins. It has a very "grippy" feel, it almost sticks to my hands. It takes some getting used to, but it's a good safety feature. I've nearly crashed in the past by hands slipping off the bars.

It does provide a nice soft cushion-y feel. Part of my monthly ride in the roads of the Santa Monicas is along Yerba Buena Road, which is full of wide transverse cracks. On a fast descent the handlebars vibrate violently, kinda like holding a jackhammer. This tape definitely took the bite off the vibration.

They look beautiful on the bike, with a slight glossy look.

My problem with this tape is that there is not quite enough length provided. My handlebars probably take more tape than most bikes, with the low drops. But I'd think they would provide plenty of tape for all uses. Part of the problem is that the instructions say to not to stretch the tape while installing. Not stretching it at all is not possible, since you have to fit the tape to the contours of the handlebar. So I used the minimum stretching that I could, which contributed to the problem of insufficient length.

The reason that I got this particular tape is that I was told that they are easier to keep clean than other tapes. That's important for me, since I use white tape, and in the past the white stuff gets grungy looking. After one ride, there is absolutely no staining. They look as good as when I installed them.

Three months down the line, I have not experienced the problem "The Squirrel" has with cleaning. For me it cleans very nicely, much better than any of the porous tapes that I've used.

One problem though is that it yellows over time with exposure to the elements.

TL;DR Great tape if you're willing to replace it once a season. It is by no means bad tape, however. Would rate it around 3.5 rather than 3 stars.

While this tape feels great it wears down fast and cleaning has mixed results (keeping in mind I purchased white). The wear issue is the real downfall.

The bad:
-Wears down FAST. The exterior and foamy/soft nature of the tape deteriorates rapidly. Expect about one season of frequent use from it.
-Stains yellow (eventually) from sweat unless you take care to wipe it with soap+water after every ride. It holds up great at first. This is irrelevant on colors other than white.
-Shifts around after being wrapped. The instructions say not to wrap it tight. The tape won't stay put if you do not wrap it tightly. I've re-wrapped the tape 3 times progressively tighter. It finally stayed put the last time after some minor shifting.
-I wouldn't say the roll is short but it's certainly not generous in length. The lack of significant stretching aggravates this.
-Overpriced. If this tape was $10/roll I really wouldn't mind replacing it once a season. It performs well in the technical department it's simply not durable. Frequent replacement just doesn't pair well with increased pricing.

The good:
+Sheds mud and road grime easily. I could see this being useful in cyclocross.
+Rides soft with generous padding. Dampens vibration well. Riding bare-handed is a pleasure with this tape.
+Grips your hands well even when wet. The surface has a tactile rubber feel & you should not have any issues slipping.

I really wanted this tape to work out. The positive aspects are amazing. The lack of durability with higher cost is a toxic combination. The tape shifting around on the bar drove me nuts until I ignored the instructions. I'm going to Fizik Microtex and will see if that provides better results.

After just 2 months of riding (35 hours on the saddle), the black vinyl coating is wearing off in the places where I hold my bars. I have had $19 bar tape (Cinelli) last 2 years and this $35 tape barely lasted two months. When I read the description and saw the price I made the mistake of assuming it was going to be a very durable bar tape. I was wrong. Where the vinyl has worn off, the grey cloth backing is now exposed. I also installed this bar tape on my wife's bike and she has the identical premature wearing. Terrible product.

I bought this tape in January and by March the handle bar tape was showing significant wear by the shifters, especially on the right. I was really disappointed because I liked the feel and the blue color but handle bar tape should last more than two months. Maybe I had a bad box but I would not try a second time.

I splurged on this tape thinking I would get a long-lasting product. I wrapped it once and the next day both the ends popped out. It comes with the adhesive on the underside but it wasn't a problem to re-wrap it but the same thing happened. I just taped the end but once the tension was gone it just started slopping off from the middle. I took it to a bike shop, had the repair guy do it and the next day the left end cap popped out. At least this time the right side has been secure for about 1.5 months.

A little bit of moisture and your hands slide all over the bars. No grip to them when wet. It's a night and day difference between wet and dry. I bought the white bar tape, knowing it would get dirty but after one big rainfall, the tape became completely discolored to a yellow-tan. So it's nonfunctional and it looks bad.

Gave up and bought SRAM supercork (in black), which I've also never tried, but I'm willing to give another "expensive" product a shot. If that doesn't work, I'm sticking to the cheap stuff.
