From Publishers Weekly

This lively sequel to Lizard's Song will have preschoolers cheering for the book's small but intrepid hero. When Lizard finds Snake curled up on his rock, he says politely, "I'm afraid you've made a mistake. Everybody knows this rock is my home." But the arrogant Snake answers with a hiss, "I don't make mistakes. I found it. I'll keep it." After trying various strategies (wishing, taking the rock back in Snake's absence), Lizard gets Snake to agree to a contest, and then, knowing Snake will cheat, outwits him. Aruego and Dewey's characteristic art, favoring high-intensity colors and cartoonlike lines, supports a cast of appealing and expressive characters. The menacing glint of his eyes signals right away that the red-and-orange striped Snake is a villain through and through, while sweet Lizard, true to his nature, does not even gloat at the end. Buoyant and affirming, especially for children who have had to deal with their own snakes in the grass. Ages 4-up. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2 In Lizard's Song (Mulberry, 1992), the rhapsodizing reptile had to wrest his favorite rock home from a dim bulb of a bear. Here, in a playful sequel, Lizard's home is again a stone of contention when a squatter snake sets his determined coils upon it and claims ownership. Piteous pleas bring only hard-hearted responses from the squatter, "I don't make mistakes. I found it. I'll keep it. It suits me fine," until Lizard issues a challenge that Snake feels he can win by cheating. Of course, crafty Lizard outwits him in the end. Shannon's bouncy text is echoed in Aruego and Dewey's ebullient watercolors of flower-filled landscapes and colorful critters, and Lizard's new wishing song will roll off the tongue as trippingly as his original hit tune. More About the Author

It feels as though I have always been wrapped in stories and books. My parents read to me, and I in turn read to younger brothers. Family economics meant we couldn't own many books, but going to the library was as common as going to the market. I still have the books I received as gifts. They include two "Little Golden Books" that were savored in childhood, and have served as talisman ever since. THE BUNNY BOOK by Patsy and Richard Scarry (1955) and RABBIT AND HIS FRIENDS by Richard Scarry (1953).

Like all children I created stories as part of play. And, like some children, I was soon identified as one who "days dreams too much." I began writing stories when they were given as assignments in elementary school. By seventh grade I was writing even when there was no assignment. My dream of making books became so vivid, I submitted my first "formal" picture book manuscript to a publisher when I was sixteen. Eleven more years of school, work, reading, writing and luck finally brought about LIZARD'S SONG, my first children's book to be accepted.

Looking back, it seems especially appropriate that LIZARD'S SONG was my first book. Even though I had been writing for years, I always felt everyone else's life held better ideas for stories than mine did. I thought there was nothing about me that was interesting enough to make a good story. But I finally learned what Lizard teaches Bear. My best stories come when I tell or sing about what makes my home. What I love. What I fear. Things that have happened to me, and things I hope will happen. Things I like about me. Things I dislike about me. Things I understand, and things that still confuse me. So even though I am not a lizard, squirrel, chicken or rabbit, when you read my books you'll find little bits of what my heart calls home.

Picture books have been my professional focus now for 40 years. Reading them. Writing them. Sharing them with children. Teaching workshops and classes on writing them. Oh yes, and buying them. Lots of them. And now, blogging about them, and helping other writers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Update of a Traditional Tale: Lizard's Home, June 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lizard's Home (Hardcover)
Lizard's Home has it's basis in an old hispanic folk tale. A version for older readers appears in Joe Hayes' Watch Out For Clever Women where the villan trying to cheat using the black and white pebbles is a money lender. The simple, but very colorful and expressive illustrations of the snake and lizard in this story are sure to captivate younger readers. The clever little lizard is able to outwit the wily snake without any violence. This would be an excellent read-aloud for kindergarten and first grade story time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great life lesson story, but illustrations are lacking..., July 9, 2005
By
This review is from: Lizard's Home (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading this story to my boys. They were laughing and very intently listening during the story, which means they really liked it. It was a very creative way to teach a very important lesson about how to settle unfair challenges in life without being violent, and also to be patient during those times. We were dissappointed though with the artwork, but that isn't what makes a good story. This is the first book I have ever felt strongly enough about to take the time to write a review, so that means something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute story with a "trick", February 5, 2011
This review is from: Lizard's Home (Paperback)
The young children I teach liked this story very much. I like it too. For one thing, there aren't too many stories about lizards - it's a nice change from farm animals. Also, four- and five-year-old children love stories about trickery and using your brain to solve problems. I definitely recommend this book.
