With much of the same appeal as Johnson's The Albatrosses of Midway Island (Carolrhoda, 1989), Schnieper handily describes the unique features of the lizard's body, its breeding habits, and its broad distribution across the globe. Meier's vivid, full-color, captioned photographs clarify and extend the information presented. Vocabulary is introduced within the text in bold print and is also included in a brief, useful glossary. Although Lizards is not as interesting as the author's outstanding Chameleons (Carolrhoda, 1990), it will be useful and enticing to students and browsers. Lionel Bender's Lizards and Dragons (Gloucester, 1988) might be the one volume all libraries should have on the subject; this one will complement it.
