I would recommend anyone who is interested in buying or adopting Llamas or Alpacas to read this book first.

It's also hard to find a book on Alpacas only, so I settled for this and was pleasantly surprised.

It's hard to find a decent alpaca book out there that doesn't cost 300 bucks. It's also hard to find a book on Alpacas only, so I settled for this and was pleasantly surprised. The Llamas don't hog all of the pages, and the author was careful to include information regarding both. Unless an awesome book on just Alpacas comes along, this will stay on the top of my book stack.

I have read this book and used it to prepare to purchase a set of alpaca fiber boys. It has helped me learn what I need to know to take care of these adorable little critters!

Not bad ..too much emphasis on activities, making Money etc . Good on medical issues and handling . Not enough on clipping and wool use

If you are looking for a basic book covering llama care, then you won't be disappointed.

This book covers more about raising, breeding, vet care, and llama behavior. Where I think it needs a bit more info is on shearing(a step by step with photos would be nice), llamas for packing (even a brief on training llamas), more on wool harvesting and production, and llamas for meat production (it only covers the 'pet' aspect).

Another word on vet care: This book only has one paragraph on the deer worm - which is the biggest killer of llamas and alpacas. Once they get it they often die quickly, and the treatment itself can kill them too. The deer worm is a very real threat in areas where Whitetail Deer live. I would have liked to see more info on the worm's life cycle, how it infects llamas, and how to prevent and treat it.

It only very briefly touches on the 'for profit' end.

This book doesn't even mention a good llama transport is a pickup truck with a cattle rack. The book only mentions SUV's, vans, or trailers.

I purchased this book because I am interested in a llama to add to a sheep herd. I think the author did a nice job describing llama behavior and care. I was not interested in the focus on 'registered' llamas. After reading this book, I decided I no longer want one.

Very helpful and user-friendly. Great for the layperson or new farmer. Does not go into so much technical detail as to be scary!
