4.0 out of 5 stars The Princess of Salsa with a piano master, May 11, 2003
This review is from: Llego La India Via Eddie Palmieri (Audio CD)
Even though I am not much of a fan of Salsa music, especially today's salsa exponents, I can't help but be captivated by La India. She is one of the most popular female vocalists ever. But her voice really shines in here. Her "soneo", which means vocal improvising (not scat - it involves improvising lyrics based on a refrain) is absolutely enthralling. At the time of this CD she was not yet too well-known - nowadays she is, in the words of Celia Cruz (a pillar of Latin music), the undisputed Princess of Salsa. Her more recent albums have included ballads that lean more to latin-pop, but fortunately not sappy or sugary at all. Her intense delivery is always a delight for the ears and the soul. The only thing that made me not give this a full score is the fact that we get the song "Solitude" in 3 versions. I think that's a bit much of the same. But nonetheless, this is a fine introduction to one of the most fiery, and passionate vocalists you are likely to find. La India is definitely a rare talent, and she is from Puerto Rico, so it makes me proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 3rd La India CD!!!, August 3, 2000
This review is from: Llego La India Via Eddie Palmieri (Audio CD)
After seeing La India this past June, I had to add to my collection!! This one was essential. I had heard some of these songs at her concert, and loved them, even more than some of her new ones! This cd is pura musica, a lot of dancing, more salsa than ever!! I love, Primera Rumba, Yemaya y Ochun and more!! This one is definently worthy to your collection!! It is rather hard to find also. Even though, I can't believe it is from 1996, La India looks so different than she does now, and in her other cds! wow! oops just realized, is that not her body attached to her face on the cover of the cd? check it out! Ya llego!!

La India pours her heart and soul into the bi-lingual version of "Soledad." If you enjoy ballads, this is it. Eddie Palmieri with his smooth sound is without a doubt, delicous! Together they work up a swinging "Vivir Sin Ti." Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another timeless Palmieri session + La India = don't miss this., February 23, 2010

18 years ago I was a musician on a ship in the Caribbean when I was lucky enough to stumble across this album (on cassette) in a little kiosk in Curacao. As a horn player, I already knew that Eddie Palmieri was a top flight performer and arranger that would have top players on the recording, and he did not let me down with this gorgeous small collection.

I had never heard of La India before this, not many had outside of PR I guess, but her introduction here still contains some of my favorites of both artists. The arrangements and performances are smooth as silk. The first track "Vivir Sin Ti" is my personal favorite of the album, and many times it has been the first thing I popped into my car stereo when starting a road trip. Awesome soaring hot brass over a cool, suave but relentlessly exciting salsa rhythm section.

I loaned my cassette tape to a friend years ago, and what happens when you loan out your favorite stuff? That's right, it's gone forever! This album was apparently never in huge distribution, so it can be a little hard to find and pricey, but thanks to a good Amazon reseller I was happy to get this on cd at a fair price, and I hope you can too.

ps- If you think this is a great session to be as old as 1996, try again, the first issue was available 4 years earlier! Don't worry about production values though, this is a sweet recording!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great voice, great musicians, November 7, 1999

India poured her heart into this work, and Eddie Palmieri poured his genius into the arrangements ,to make India's debut album so powerful.Since then, everything that she has done has been sub par and overproduced, just compare it to this.

India shows that she is Crazy Cool in this CD. Not yet Diva material, but she does a SLAMMIN' Yemaya & Ochun song that kicks Ass!!! It is the best thing she has done ever since doing her Ocha! I love this album and it is worth buying it. The balads are cool, but once again Milton Cardona and India are the bomb!!! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPA!
