Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Over the years I have received many thousands of letters. Some of them were from people who thought they were under psychic attack or who wanted to know how to prevent or defeat such an attack.

The number of letters requesting information indicated to me that something was needed to help people. I thought we needed a book that focused not on the attack, but on keeping one's defenses strong, so that an attack would never succeed. In fact, the focus should be on giving a person confidence in his or her psychic well-being.

That is why I was so glad that two of the premier occultists of our time, Denning and Phillips, wrote what I think is the best book ever on the subject, The Llewellyn Practical Guide to Psychic Self-Defense. Many of you must agree because it has helped almost 125,000 people!

The book gives techniques to dispel any attack before it harms you (you do this by strengthening your aura) and to respond to any attack that does get through your defenses (get rid of physical links to the attacker and perform a simple but powerful blessing ritual).

More importantly, the book focuses on helping you to become aware of all sorts of mental attacks by people using psychology to manipulate you. When you realize what is happening, you can take control of your life and finally obtain true peace, balance and harmony.

About the Author

Melita Denning and Osborne Phillips are internationally-recognized authorities on the mainstream Western Mysteries and are two of the foremost exponents of the Ogdoadic Tradition, that premier hermetic school whose keywords are knowledge and regeneration, and whose influence and works are historically traceable for the past one thousand years.

The authors received their major esoteric training in the magical order Aurum Solis, a society which was founded in 1897 and which has continued in active existence to the present day. On July 8, 1987, the authors, then heads of Aurum Solis, retired from the Order; but on June 23, 1988, at the unanimous request of the members, they resumed office.

In 1997, Melita Denning passed from this earth.

Format: Paperback
Melita Denning and Osborne Phillips have published numerous books and tapes about psychic matters, magic, creative visualization, and astral projection. Their Practical Guide to Psychic Self-Defense and Well-Being, Second Edition is an update of the acclaimed first edition.
Their publisher notes that there's no shortage of misinformation about the Occult, including psychic attacks, and says that "this book will give you a great deal of `correct knowledge' and straighten out a lot of the nonsense . . . that has lead many naive people to walk in fear of demons and curses, of possession and jinxes, and denied to them their own natural psychic talents that would protect them. . . "
Denning and Phillips believe that psychic self-defense begins with a strong aura. They explain exactly what an aura is, distinguishing between the electrical and psychic auras. Acknowledging that certain situations create fear within us is the first step. The authors provide tips for recognizing rational and irrational fears and for overcoming them. They then explain in great detail how to create a "tower of light" that will "make your aura the luminous and potent shield of spiritual protection you ought to have." With practice, the tower of light can be invoked the instant you feel threatened or attacked.
They go on to discuss the fact that a strong aura offers protection only from outside threats. Negative emotions attack from within, and weaken the protective light surrounding you. They also make people more susceptible to attacks made through elementals and sorcery. Denning and Phillips describe how to overcome attachments and break any links that have been established with unwanted entities.

I have read quite a few books by Denning & Phillips, and I have to say that I am almost always impressed by them. Though the couple was steeped in the tradition of the Aurum Solis, and many of the exercises in this book (and others) are borrowed from that tradition, everything is pretty straightforward and *accessible*. The writing style is down to earth. I can't quite place my finger on what it is that I enjoy about the writing style of D & P, except that they are earthy, not pompous and almost parental in their guidance. Years ago, I found this book and since that time I have lent it out or given it to several people... something I just don't ordinarily do. The exercises are simple, little or no ritualism and, (again, that word) "accessible" for the average person. I'm confused by another reviewer who felt the "tower of light" exercise was complicated or suitable for "adepts only"...I felt exactly the opposite. As other reviewers have mentioned, many topics are covered in this book, including psychic vampirism, negative group energies, even advertising pressures. Read this along with Denning & Phillips "Creative Visualization"...they work well together. Overall, highly recommended!

It's a pity they don't teach this at school! With the media full of violence and negativity, Psychic self-defense has become a necessity. There's so much stress around, advertisements often play on primitive emotions, the news focuses on the sensational and political/religious appeals often trigger guilt and fear. Well, this wonderful work explains how one can stay sane in the midst of so much insanity. Practicing the exercises enhances your sense of well-being and provides valuable insights about how to protect yourself against psychic and other forms of attack. There is nothing weird or occult about these simple exercises, in fact, they make perfect sense. Ancient techniques like the "Tower Of light" are explained and there are handy relaxation techniques. A couple of good illustrations illumine the text, while a helpful glossary and index allow easy reference and understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I'm using it as a reliable reference work.

This one is definitely recommended especially for anyone who feels they are too much of an empath. It is as it says, a "Practical Guide To ..." It successfully addresses real life situations (such as on-the-job, etc) and there are immediate results from the exercises practiced from the book.

I've given or lent my spare copy of the earlier edition of this six or eight times. At a glance, the new edition isn't much different. The book works as a fine course in assertiveness training.

This book will give you a lot of clear insights into what the authors call the occult. I find most of their advice "common sense" but that does not mean it is common knowledge. This book will NOT make you feel more paranoid. It will make you feel more empowered, more centered, and more relaxed.
I find falling asleep after using "the tower of light" technique in bed especially wonderful.
Simple, easy, straightforward and highly recommended!

An other reviewer mentioned Robert Bruce and his "Practical psychic self-defense". And if you are not a little bit paranoid before reading that... It can make you paranoid after reading his book. It is not bad, just make sure you do "the tower of light" before and after reading that book.
