2.0 out of 5 stars Witchcraft or life styles?, March 29, 2008
This is the newest addition to the Llewellyn Almanac line and is the first presentation. The usual format is followed - many essays and articles and some basic almanac information in the back of the book, along with pages of promotions for the books by the featured authors.

I wanted to like this book. I have always enjoyed many of the essays presented in these books as they tend to be more cutting edge, much more free to express the opinions of some very well know folks in their communities who are not part of the usual Llewellyn authors stable.

But this book relies too much on recent authors, rather than community members. And we see some of the same material that is presented in their books presented here... a bit different but the same Llewellyn flavor.

I did like the articles by Elizabeth Barrette. The "Granola Wicca: Religion for Fruits, Flakes, and Nuts" was an excellent article. It discusses the many nuts we have in our own community and is very frank and honest in its approach. This is the kind of article I have come to expect from these almanacs.

Her other article "Magical Perceptions" was also a very well written article on magic and manifestations. It is an article on experiential magic, how we can personally perceive magic in our own practice.

I was, however, disappointed with some of the other articles. Some articles were very "fluffy" and I found myself reading into them, getting to a point and then skipping the rest. They struck me as superficial, material that had been explored previous to this in more detail than the brief articles presented.

I also found myself wondering if some of the articles were more about the various sub-cultures that inhabit the pagan community rather than about witchcraft or paganism in general. I approached this book as the cover suggests, "An almanac for Everyday Living" and found myself reading essays supporting life style choices rather than spiritual advices or pagan concerns. I would have found articles discussing ecological issues, political issues and pagans, or educational issues and pagans matching more the suggested theme presented on the cover of the book.

The almanac section in the back is skimpy as well. One side of the two page monthly almanac is the calendar with the moon phases and holidays, the other is introduced as a Zodiac sign and a meditation, excerpt or spell from one of the featured artists books. The last few pages are advertising for the authors books.

I did not find any of the articles provoking or reflective. And while I did find the "Granola Wicca" article delightful, I found myself wondering as I reached the end of this collection of writings if Ms. Barrette's article wasn't somewhat prophetic in relation to some of the material presented in this book. 3.0 out of 5 stars This is not what it seems from the title, February 16, 2008
By Jeremy Krall (Dearborn Heights, MI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the previous reviewer wrote, there isn't a lot of everyday information in this "Almanac for Everyday Living." Llewellyn has other books that do a better job of providing everyday information.
There are some good articles in the book with plenty of ideas, but it does not seem to be an almanac. And if that is what you are looking for, then look elsewhere.
If you just want some essays and tips, this book has some good writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointment, February 11, 2008
This book dissapointed me. There is not a whole lot of everyday help, or items to think on. I will not be getting this again.
