5.0 out of 5 stars Maravillosa Soledad, March 13, 2001

I am a student of spanish and have been looking for songs the are clear and beautifully rendered. I have a Venezuelan friend who recommended Soledad Bravo, who has one of the most beautiful voices I have heard. This 2 CD set is a great value and contains a variety of songs: folkloric, ballads, love songs, dance music.

I highly recommend set.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Soledad Bravo....., September 5, 2005
This review is from: Mejor (Audio CD)
I feel particularly close to Soledad Bravo, as an artist and a fellow Venezolana. She radiates warmth in her beautiful folkloric songs, featured in this dual CD collection of some of her greatest hits. CD #1 features "Pajarillo Verde" (Green Bird), perhaps one of her best-known folkloric songs. It combines tenderness with poetry. This is just one of many beautiful tunes. "Anda Jaleo," "Violin de Becho," and "Rota Oriental, Spain" follow a similar style. These songs combine acoustic-based rhythms and acompaniment with Soledad's magnificent voice. We also are introduced to llanera music (literally, "plains music"), in the form of "Alla Viene Corazon."

Unfortunately, this album falls short, for me, on the second CD. Soledad's once crystal clear vocals did not age well, and that is made apparent in her interpretation of dance music. She comes off as brittle, rough and even crass. There is an edge and unpolished quality that makes it sound as though she is (almost) choking on the melodies. Not so pleasant to the ear..... Most of the songs sound like fusions of salsa and traditional Venezuelan percussion (this isn't something I often find a need to criticize--ordinarily, that is something I enjoy, in fact). Unfortunately, in my opinion, Soledad's strong suit was more as balladeer and folksinger, in her younger years. Overall, this album is definitely worth listening to, though. My advice is that you stick to the first CD, though.
