Editorial Reviews

Review

"Bob Odenkirk is wrong. He’s wrong about Jesus hosting a comedy show and he’s wrong that his book is just, 'a load of hooey.' It’s a load of funny and thoughtful is what it is. And why would one title a book that way? It gives the wrong impression to folks. It’s a terrible marketing plan. It should be called, 'The Best Book in the World This Year', or, 'This is Totally Worth It!' or something along those lines. It’s certainly not a load of hooey. Oh! And I looked up the definition of “hooey” as per the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. It does NOT say that! He’s wrong about that too!!!! Wrong, wrong, wrong!" —David Cross

“The king of alt comedy…expands his reign with this absurd collection of tirades, rhyming verse, and tips on how to avoid getting an embarrassing tattoo.” —O, Oprah Magazine

“Odenkirk…shows his cerebral side in his first collection of humor writing.” —Maxim

"Delightfully absurd" —The Weekly Alibi

"A deft blend of silliness and ridicule, mirth and rage: salt augmenting sweetness." —Barnes & Noble Review

"Delivered with a combination of thoughtfulness and absurdity that Odenkirk has honed over the course of his career." —A.V. Club

“'A Load of Hooey' is a load of laughs." —New York Post

"A toolkit for anyone with a stake in making a 'creative wage' out of our digital culture... [Cory Doctorow's] arguments are entertainingly presented, forcefully made, and easy to follow." —Quill & Quire

"Very funny and immensely silly." —Portland Mercury

"A Load of Hooey finds the comedy legend doing what he does best: lampooning pretension." —Chicago Reader

"Spoiler alert — it’s FUNNY!" —Local IQ

"Is it fair that [Odenkirk] is not only a funny, successful actor but also a funny, successful writer? Absolutely not, but fairness has even less to do with comedy than love and war." —The New York Times Book Review

About the Author

Bob Odenkirk has won two Emmy Awards for comedy writing, for Saturday Night Live and The Ben Stiller Show. He co-created and starred in Mr. Show with Bob and David, which ran on HBO and has been called “the American Monty Python,” which is perhaps a bit of an overstatement in his opinion. Bob has written short comic pieces for the New Yorker and had a regular page in Vice magazine - and there's not much overlap between those two publications, is there?

Bob has directed three feature films: Melvin Goes To Dinner, Let’s Go To Prison, and The Brothers Solomon, all of which underwhelmed, admittedly, but Melvin is worth watching, for sure.

Bob has had many other memorable roles on TV, most notably The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, How I Met Your Mother (CBS), and The Office (NBC). He is most proud of his appearances in James Ponsoldt's The Spectacular Now and Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.

He is currently Executive Producing, writing, and co-starring in The Birthday Boys, a sketch comedy show for IFC to premiere in October, 2013.

This was the first book I read on my Kindle and now everything I read on it seems like a Load of Hooey. I can't take anything seriously anymore. God damn you Bob Odenkirk.

This collection of short (mostly around one page) funny pieces is slightly humorous and mostly engaging. Though there are a number of great set-ups, there's not really a lot of payoff. But Odenkirk does at least provide a number of different types of written humor, from short story to short play to short quotes to short comic. There's nothing here that's really bad but there's also not much that's great. There's a piece on Paul McCartney's secret sarcastic side being displayed when he revealed "Blackbird" to the rest of the Beatles that made me laugh out loud. But other than that it's a mildly amusing quick read.

Also, I should add that he has a section mocking internet reviews so it feels like writing anything negative about the book sets you up for mockery. So in that way, well-played Odenkirk.

I really love Bob Odenkirk. This book is a fun easy read that was very funny! I read this entire thing in his voice and from time to time I imagine Saul Goodman writing this book in his spare time at his office in the ABQ!

Bob Odenkirk is a comedy legend. If you read his latest book, A Load of Hooey, you will understand why. I haven't laughed this hard in a very long time. Thank you Bob for continuing to write and give us things to smile about.

That is the message sent to the German Army when they asked the 101st Airborne if they would surrender during the seige of Bastogne, during the Battle of the Bulge.
It made as much sense to the Germans as parts of this book did to me. But eventually, the Germans and I figured it out. They, of course, had the benefit of 30-06 rounds zinging by their heads, in case they needed clarification. I, fortunately, did not.
But seriously, this is great comedy. A laugh on every page. I had to restrain myself from reading the whole thing in one gulp. It's nice that it's in bite-size pieces. Tasty pieces.

One of those books where your fellow commuters find you laughing hysterically, crying even. They want to ask what you're reading and all you can do is hold up the cover so they can read it; you're laughing so hard ... I have to admit, I did not know who Bob Odenkirk was until I finished the book and saw his picture. He's very talented on the page, on the stage and on the screen.

I'm a big fan of Mr show w bob and danny. And that other show "brokeback baddies". So I picked this book up Hoping it could help me with my over-eating and tendency to shout. By chapter 4 I felt the desire to eat much less strongly. By chapter bleven I was speaking to my kids in a normal tone of voice. I highly recommend this book to anyone with eating disorders (unless you're anorexic, in which case I refer you to "eat up stupid!" by Theodore brixton.), or those with shouting problems.

I have loved Bob Odenkirk since Mr. Show, and this collection of short pieces is a lot of fun. In many ways it reminds me of the type of humor present in Mr. Show, and it is interesting to read the variety of responses that people have to the book when their only exposure is Tim and Eric or Breaking Bad.

I actually read a lot of this in some of the pieces that he had released prior to the book being published. I am not sure I remember where I had read those (The Believer? New Yorker? McSweeney's?), but they were a gas. I think that the thing that stinks a little is that the book is so short that I felt like I had already read a big chunk of it in other publications... But honestly, “Hitler Dinner Party” was still very funny the second time around. Odenkirk is impressive in this book with his ability to master the difficult art of written comedy so effectively and get me rolling on the floor by myself. If the art of comedy is timing, Odenkirk has written comedy that takes that rule and makes it divine with only his words.

I am not sure this is the kind of book that would be picked up a hundred times over and over again, and dogeared, and shared, but it is one that I got a tremendous kick out of and have recommended to friends. I loved it, and I will certainly remain a great fan of Odenkirk and his work (and look forward to this supposed Mr. Show reboot?! I've never been not worried about a group getting back together to make something new a decade later as I have been with these guys!...if it is true...). Loved this book.
