Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This thoroughly ridiculous collection unites a one-shot comic and its 13- and 14-years later sequels. Christmas 1991 was sullied by The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special, in which, on a contract from the Easter Bunny, Lobo, a red-eyed albino version of Conan the Barbarian wielding Sly Stallone superweapons, rubs out Santa and his slave-labor toy--factory enclave. Way later, the youngest in the satiric superhero crew the Authority (another member is a pothead, while two others are gay male lovers) reads that comic and, believing it, ropes her adult comrades into punishing the "mean clown"--Lobo, that would be. It takes one further installment to accomplish not Lobo's but the perfidious Easter Bunny's destruction (he never paid Lobo). The initial Lobo adventure excels the sequels in cleverness, but all three stories are rewarding as long as one enjoys the humor of wretched excess, of mayhem so overblown that, in the hands of ace artist Simon Bisley, anyway, it becomes psychedelically unintelligible. Two much shorter, soberer Authority stories by other hands wrap things up. Ray Olson

Product Description

When you think of holidays, you think of…Lobo? Collected here for the first time are three tales of holiday cheer featuring the bastich himself, Lobo, and The Authority!

In "The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special", Lobos tries to take out Kris Kringle himself – in a hit organized by The Easter Bunny. Next, in "The Authority/Lobo: Jingle Hell", Lobo comes to the Wildstorm Universe as a young Jenny Quantum wants him to answer for his horrible crime against Old Saint Nick. And finally, in "The Authority/Lobo: Spring Break Massacre", this series of holiday fun comes full circle as The Authority realize Lobo is still free in their universe and that he must be stopped before he collects his long-awaited bounty from the Easter Bunny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Initially a Rather Hateful Read, But.., April 13, 2007
By Crypticwhispers (Palm Beach, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
as the story progresses, the characters become more and more likeable and the plot more and more impressive. The start of this book is obscenely violent and seems to assume some familiarity with Lobo, whom I didn't know, but after several pages of graphic elf killing, the story links up with the Authority and takes on a more "organized" (used loosely) approach. By the end, I was loving this book. I'd recommend this to anyone with a warped sense of humor and/or appreciation for "bad guy antiheroes."

I'm a big fan of The Authority, and I certainly know Lobo from his appearaces against Superman. But somehow the Authority/Lobo combination doesn't work for me. More important, the holiday theme includes a non-Authority story that I found especially disappointing. Authority fans can safely pass this one; Lobo fans, take a chance.
