This review is from: Lobo (Hardcover)
It's a good book not a great book. NEGATIVE: "Lobo" is short. The writing is okay, but it oscillates between moments of excellence and shallow, tepid narrative. "Lobo" is organized a bit haphazardly. "Lobo" is a tad maudlin. "Lobo" is not exciting, but it is a warm story. "Lobo" is illustrated with images of Lobo by Mr. Kantor's spouse, Mrs. Irene Layne Kantor, who was a commercial artist and recreational painter. POSITIVE: "Lobo" is fun. "Lobo" is funny. "Lobo" is insightful into the minds of Mr. and Mrs. Kantor and Lobo. "Lobo" leaves you wanting more. "Lobo" is required reading if you are a fan of MacKinlay Kantor.

From 1954-6, Mister MacKinlay Kantor spent 17 months writing his epic (700+ pages, 370,000+ words) American Civil War novel "Andersonville." He faced physical, mental, and emotional failure.

"Lobo" is about Lobo and Mr. Kantor writing "Andersonville." Mr. Kantor met a lovable rogue, a Basque shepherd, named "Lobo," on a visit to Spain. Back in the US, Mr. Kantor finally got permission from his publisher to write "Andersonville," but he was told to get away from Florida distractions. Mr. Kantor returned to Spain. In Spain, while Mr. Kantor wrote "Andersonville," Lobo adopted Mr. and Mrs. Kantor and moved in. Mr. and Mrs. Kantor, and Lobo developed a bond. Lobo was uninterested in "Andersonville." Mr. Kantor had not finished "Andersonville" and had to return to the US. Mr. Kantor brought Lobo back to the US. Back in Florida, Mr. Kantor continued to write and Lobo became the same lovable rogue he was in Spain. When "Andersonville" began to overhwhelm Mr. Kantor, Lobo changed, became interested in "Andersonville," and pushed him to write. Mr. Kantor finished "Andersonville." The next year, "Andersonville" earned the Pulitzer.

Mr. Kantor credited Lobo for pushing him to finish "Andersonville."

Mr. Kantor wrote "Lobo" the year after he wrote "Andersonville." At the time, people credited "Lobo" with a positive change American's attitudes towards pets.
