Editorial Reviews

Between 1967 and 1981 Detroit's downriver neighbor Ecorse, Michigan had its very own Harry Smith. Set up in a basement on 18th Avenue, Felton Williams chronicled the musical lives of Ecorse's citizens and issued them on the Solid Rock, Compose, and Revival labels. Compiled here are 24 of Williams' most fascinating recordings, covering gospel, group soul, garage-punk, northern, jazz, and funk. Also included is a DVD of the over 200 sound recordings pulled from his archives and a 30 minute featurette on the making of Downriver Revival.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic, Charming and Profound, June 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Local Customs: Downriver Revival (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
This is one of the most enjoyable releases I have heard (and seen) in quite a some time. I hesitate to use the word "charming" since the material is earnest and authentic, but I can't think of a more appropriate description. Makes me wish I had been exploring downriver instead of hanging out at the Grande Ballroom. Along with Take Me To The Water -- Immersion Baptism In Vintage Music & Photography 1890 to 1950 (which I had something to do with) probably the most fun you will have this summer. I am going to scrimp, save and follow the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bevy of gospel/soul gems. Major bargain !, January 28, 2010
This review is from: Local Customs: Downriver Revival (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
Listening to the snippets on this very site I was impressed enough to run out to my local independent record shop (remember those) and plunk down a Jackson to obtain it. The 24 track CD and detailed notes are reason enough but what I wasn't really aware of when I moved on that impulse, and what puts this gem completely over the top, is the bonus DVD tape vault. Holy cow, 200 recordings in a virtual tape vault that you can navigate and enjoy, especially if your player is connected to your hifi. What a fantastic surprise, a great idea, the folks that put this together should be proud, so much bang for the buck, this is sick. Don't walk, run !
