Unfortunately, I'm fairly shallow and no longer read very many books. When I do, however, I'm usually reminded what a wonderful gift the written word can be when entrusted to capable authors.

Doubly enjoyable can be those works that are complemented with moving and interesting photographs that thell their own stories.

"Local Heroes: Portraits of American Volunteer Firefighters" is one such book. Befitting its subject matter, it is truly a "sparkacular" addition to our home library, which is so much more a reflection of my wife's tastes in literature.

However, on this book we agree. It is one of those rare books that we both have read and enjoyed. In fact, the initial reason for its purchase was that we had lived for a number of years in Westchester COunty, NY in a community where the Volunteer Fire Departments were an integral part of the town's culture. The blaring sirens in the middle of the night and the very thought of lawyers, advertizing executives, pharmacists, salesmen and so many others from every walk of life dropping everything in order to help their fellow citizen is a microcosm of the very best that we can be as a society.

There was never any fanfare. In fact, the only celebration of their service was the annual Volunteer Fireman's Parade, which was much more yet another of their gifts to the community, but all onlookers, young and old respected and honored those who protected us and saved lives and provided comfort.

The stories in this book are "sparktacular" as are the varied photos that never feel repetitive. Having lived a large portion of my life in major metropolitan areas I never fully understood the concept of a volunteer firefighter force.

Local Heroes: Portraits of American Volunteer Firefighters is an inspiring book packed with stories and pictures of some of this nation's most heroic individuals. My husband was a volunteer firefighter for fourteen years and is still active in the local fire department, so I was drawn to this book. Featuring local volunteer departments across the nation, and profiles of average citizens who go above and beyond the call of duty, this book is captivating. With stories of small town fires and large-scale forest fires, and the brave men and women who stepped up to fight them, Local Heroes is a refreshing glimpse into the world of volunteer firefighting - a field which is so often overlooked with the glamor of the big city firefighters - and the brave individuals who work a full-time job each day and gladly step up to protect their cities around the clock. I bought this book to add a little inspiration to my coffee table and ended up being truly touched and heartened. The photographs are beautiful- I love that they're portraits because it lets you see these men and women as real people. The stories are beautiful too- incredibly varied, really interesting and well told.
With the hurricane recovery still going on and the political landscape still so fraught with division, it lifted my spirits to read such an extraordinary American story about people from all walks of life, joining together, to just do something good. I'm ordering 4 more to give as holiday gifts.

I just got my copy of Ian Spanier's photography book "Local Heroes". It's a wonderful tribute to true American heroes who volunteer as firefighters in small and medium locations around the country. Best of all are the photographs, which are so well made and so sensitive to each person and each firehouse. I love that Spanier used a different style for each fire station- some in color, others in b/w, some with white backgrounds, others in the station environment. Along with the photographs are the stories of the volunteers that add a dimension to each portrait that was unexpected. This is a very moving and important book, and perhaps the only one that takes such a respectful and in-depth look at volunteer firefighters- both men women. I certainly hope art galleries and museums see this powerful work and mount exhibitions.
In addition to the great images and moving stories is the elegant, understated design of the book, which in no small way facilitates our reading and understanding of the photographs. The design allows the pictures and stories to subtly suggest both the subjects' humanity and their great achievements, without overstatement or hyperbole.
This book is an example of the great collaboration between photographers, writers and designers that are the hallmark of the great photography books. This is a must see book and I urge those who love photography, and those who love and respect our volunteer firefighters to get a copy.
