Editorial Reviews

With this brand-new recording, Brilliant Classics embarks on an enterprising and ambitious new edition focuses on the works of Italian Baroque-era violinist/composer Pietro Antonio Locatelli. The first release in the Locatelli Edition highlights Locatelli's elegant trio sonatas performed on period instruments. Acclaimed early music group Ensemble Violini Cappricciosi, directed by Igor Ruhadze, delivers an inventive and virtuosic performance.

This excellent music is very period and gratifying. It is exquisite, impassioned, and dainty, with a sincere earnest by both composer and the Ensemble Violini Capricciosi. The violins, cello, and bass continuo all sound distinguished. These sonatas maintain the strong traditional Italian style, however, there are also "galant" Rococo elements.

Op. 5 No. 6 is especially impressive as it consists of "two solo sonata groups superimposed upon one another out of phase". If you really want to hear some intense Locatelli, you may wish to purchase his Opus 3 (Hyperion label with Elizabeth Wallfisch on violin) for which I have and also reviewed.

This double cd set is only Volume 1. Igor Ruhadze's "Ensemble Violini Capricciosi" , and the Brilliant label conclude with the 5 cd set (Vol. 2) containing the rest of Locatelli's Op. 8 and all of Op. 6. It is just as excellent and worthy!

Locatelli was known a gifted violinist who studied under Corelli. He was known for his violin virtuosity and "dazzling pyrotechnical feats". He was known for giving attention in some compositions to the upper register of the violin. I liken these compositions (Opus 5, and Opus 8) to Buxtehude's and Corelli's sonatas as equal in accomplishment and first-class standing!

Locatelli only had a limited number of works, Opus' 1-8.

Have a great day Friends !

If you have stumbled on this item you know that Locatelli is best remembered these days as an important precursor to Paganini, and in fact Paganini's first caprice from Op.1 is modeled on one of the Caprices from l'Arte del Violino Op.3. If you have listened to those concertos you know that they contain some of the most difficult violin writing in the baroque period, and certainly have the consistently highest range on the violin from any composer I know.

These sonatas are a bit tamer, but certainly eclipse Corelli's sonatas in terms of difficulty and brilliance, even though there may not be the same level of inspiration throughout. The Ensemble Violini Capricciosi are wonderful and strike an impeccably tasteful balance between beauty of sound from the violin and interpretive choices appropriate to the period and style, including very discreet use of vibrato to enhance the expressiveness and limpidity of the line. The Prova dell' Intonazione on Disc 2 simply has to be heard to be believed. If you are a violinist you will appreciate how difficult this piece is and the extremely high quality of the execution and intonation. If you are not a violinist (I'm a pianist) but enjoy freaky high notes you will enjoy hearing the passagework slide right off the top of the piano and stay there! It's pretty wild. Who said Baroque composers never broke a sweat?

These guys are really good and the music is beautiful. The violin writing is more conservative than the concertos but has moments that are genuinely crazy and breathtaking. Highly recommended, and at a great price!

Music is good.
CD case arrived cracked inside--this seems to be common with 2 CD cases--maybe the plastic is not designed very well ?
But too much of a hassle to send it back.
