Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-Several of the standard accounts of explorers and eyewitnesses are repeated here. Illustrative material includes photographs of scientists, witnessess, and the creatures respective habitats, as well as classic photographic proof of Bigfoot and Yeti's footprints and, possibly, Bigfoot and Nessie themselves, supplemented by artists' renderings of the monsters. Despite continuing investigation by interested people, reliable reports of sightings and physical evidence are few and far between. So it is that no new evidence is presented in these attractive packages. Balancing disproved evidence with possible valid reports, the text in each case fosters an open mind about the subjects. In the absence of any very recent findings, earlier summaries of monster stories such as Mary Blount Christian's Bigfoot and Harriet Sheffer Abels's Loch Ness Monster (both Crestwood, 1987) are still useful. Also, unlike Landau's books, they supply more of an older history of sightings and provide more comparison with several like creatures around the world. Daniel Cohen's Monster Hunting Today (Putnam, 1983) expands the details of eyewitness encounters with these and other comparable monsters.
