This is a most unusual release on the Red House Records label - best known as the home singer/songwriters like John Gorka, Greg Brown and Danny Schmidt. This is basically an album of jazz vocal stylings of songs from the Great American Songbook. Singer Heather Masse is best known as a member of the Canadian acoustic folk group The Wailin' Jennys and octogenarian (he turned 86 last week) pianist Dick Hyman is well known in jazz circles for his research, as well as performance, of the history of Ragtime piano. While I've seen Hyman play a number of times, I've never seen or heard Masse, who is 55 year's Hyman's junior. But age makes no difference here. Hyman is in top form and Masse sings her way around the 12 songs - most composed before she was born - with confidence in her voice. Masse even composed one of the songs ( "Morning Drinker") and it fits right in among standards like "Love for Sale", "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered" and "I Got it Bad (and that ain't good)", the latter track filling nearly 6 ˝ minutes of the 55 minute CD.
Most of the songs take a slow and easy pace; nothing is rushed. The only obviously up-tempo number is the closer, a fun-filled "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart (and throw away the key)", with Hyman showing off his ragtime chops between Masse's vocals.
As another reviewer pointed out, and I'll agree, this a perfect CD to listen to with a nice glass of wine while sitting by the fire in a comfy chair.
The 80-page booklet includes photos, composer credits and short essays on the project from the two artists.
An oddball release on the independent Minnesota-based label, but certainly one that jazz vocal (and Hyman fans) will want.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars thanks to garrison keillor! May 11, 2013

thanks to mr keillor for suggesting that these two perform together on his show. the suggestion became this album and it's great.
it takes a great deal of skill to perform this way - with only the voice of wonderful voice of heather masse and the piano skill of dick hyman. i want more from them! it's a treat to listen to these two demonstrate their individual talents so purely. i would recommend this - and have - to anyone who likes to hear the voice of a great singer and the masterful touch of a very skilled pianist.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Find April 1, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While a long time fan of Jazz, Blues, etc. music. I have never paid a lot of attention to Dick Hyman over the years.
Once hearing an excerpt of this album, I had to have it. He definitely has never lost this touch and accompanied by the extremely talented Heather Masse(who I had not heard of) created a masterpiece in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cabaret Jazz February 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD is a trip thru the Great American Songbook. I remember Dick Hyman from many years ago. His play is still sharp and crisp. There is a chemistry between Hyman and Ms. Masse that is not achieved easily. Masse has a unique voice, one that seems at home in a few genres. The highlights here are "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", Since I Fell For You" and "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good". There is also a reading of "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart..." that is pure fun. A must for anyone who likes vocals and piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing March 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This CD is one you want to put on while sitting by a fire with a glass of wine. It's romantic, dreamy and just a lovely throwback to days of old jazz. Heather has a pure tone enhanced by Dick Hyman's years of experience tinkling the ivories. This is sure to become a classic and a purchase you won't soon regret.
