Editorial Reviews

Review

Fire Point (Ryan Lock 6) is available for pre-order now at Amazon.
"This series is ace. There are deservedly strong Lee Child comparisons as the author is also a Brit, his novels US-based, his character appealing, and his publisher the same." - Sarah Broadhurst, The Bookseller
"This is a writer, and a hero, to watch." - Geoffrey Wansell, The Daily Mail
"Black's style is supremely slick." - Jeremy Jehu, The Daily Telegraph
"The pace of Lee Child, and the heart of Harlan Coben." - Joseph Finder, New York Times Bestseller (Paranoia, Buried Secrets)

From the Author

This Lock story, of roughly 15,000 words, can be read separately from the rest of the Ryan Lock series, as can each full-length novel. For readers following the books in order, the events described here take place between the second book in the series, Deadlock, and the third, Gridlock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sean, you're a tease! December 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
People who have read my previous reviews will know that I have a bit of a character crush with Ryan Lock the man featured in the series of books written by Sean Black. I discovered his books from the first release and have not been let down once since then. His series of books featuring Ryan Lock and his partner Ty are absolutely brilliant. Sean Black has managed to integrate himself with the other major Crime players out there such as Coben, Lee Child etc. When I realised that he had released a short story in the Lock series I immediately downloaded it onto my Kindle.

Yesterday lunchtime I settled with my lunch and began to read. It took me less than a chapter to be thrown back with Lock and Ty. This short story features them protecting a young Hollywood actress from her rather violent and abusive Movie star boyfriend. As usual Lock and Ty fall into their usual banter and it was like seeing old friends again. This book does however (I am almost positive) go back in time a little bit to just before Gridlock. People who have been reading the series will probably have noticed this too. Don't get me wrong it didn't make the story any less enjoyable, it just threw me slightly!

The only problem I had with this, and it's a major problem for me, is that it was finished by the time my lunch break came to an end! For this reason alone I was not a happy bunny. I do believe Sean that you are a bit of a tease! How dare you flaunt my favourite lead male character and then whip him away again!?!? All I can do is console myself with the fact that a new book in the series should be due next year. For all those Lock fans this is a little teaser, and people that haven't read the series, a cheaper way to try before you buy if you like. I don't think you will be disappointed! <sighs heavily> I guess I will wait with baited breath until the next release before I get too excited again.

This is my second Sean Black novel and I am enjoying his writing. I look forward to reading his other novels. Ryan Lock is an entertaining character without all the violence and swearing in many other novels.

Sean Black is my favorite new author, even though he's been on the publishing radar for a couple of years with his Ryan Lock Series about close protection operatives and "A Million Shades of Green", his sly look at the fan fiction genre that turned publishing on it's ear.

I digress. "Lock & Load" is Black's latest installment of the Lock Series, a short story nestled between books two and three and I suspect, a little teaser for Ryan and Ty fans while the author completes another book. It is a tasty little morsel and whet my appetite for another big book of Ryan and Ty. The operatives find themselves in the employ of an up and coming movie actress who is being abused by her has-been boyfriend. Black has said previously that he wanted to touch on a topical subject when we next meet Lock and he certainly has with the subject of relationship violence. In one scene, the young woman is being strangled by her drunk boyfriend, and it was so realistic that I saw the same stars that the character did. Black's empathy for his victim is evidenced by understanding of the emotional impact violence has on a victim. Further, the victim in this case has an additional issue with the monster boyfriend, unique to her profession and it is Ryan and Ty's resolution of this issue that is extremely satisfying. I wish they had done more.

Perhaps it is Black's extensive research on his topics (who can forget that he went to Pelican Bay, the Supermax prison in California) or his unique understanding of the human condition but whatever it is, his characters are well rounded, and interesting, whether they be the good or the bad guys. I wish someone would option this series and give us some visual entertainment, too, because "Lock & Load", short story that it might be, certainly deserves to be told. I am anxiously awaiting the next feast prepared by Sean Black with his Ryan Lock series. Well done and Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Ryan Lock February 4, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second time I’ve read this story, which is a rather long short story starring Ryan Lock. Ryan is also the protagonist in some full length novels which are now on my list. It was a nice taste for what is in store as I read more of Black’s thrillers. In this one he’s protecting a young female Hollywood star from her action/adventure movie star ex-boyfriend.
