5.0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary - 'Lock 'N Load' (A&M Records)
This has GOT to be one of the funniest comedy CD's ever made.I remember seeing Leary for the very first time on a MTV clip snarling,"Sting,if I were you,I wouldn't worry about saving the rain forest,I'd worry more about getting all my hair back".Good point.Leary opens his hour long set with slamming Michael Flattley for being the 'Lord Of The Dance',telling the audience...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but half the disc is unfunny filler material...
I bought this disc because I like Denis Leary. I really liked 'No Cure for Cancer' and I've liked his film roles. And I don't think he ripped off _anything_ from Bill Hicks (who started out really really funny, then turned into a preachy, liberal, whiner who gets way too much respect just for having died young).

Anyway, the problem with 'Lock 'N Load' as I...

His domestic policy: **** you!! Oh,yeah, should mention that apparently Leary uses the 'F' word a LOT.Leary's theory on a lasting marriage:have your own rooms, eat, watch TV together, have sex, etc.MORE than anything, avoid each other all other times. There are also some novelty tunes on here, like "Life's Gonna Suck".I must've listened to this CD about twenty times in the first three months that I had it.Ideal for parties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Offensive, politically incorrect and fearsomely hillarious, July 17, 2001

There are only two albums by Denis Leary available - this one and "No Cure For Cancer"; if you buy this one, you will get the other one, as well.

Mr Leary is not just your average comedian getting an odd joke or two at the expense of political correctness; his entire act is built on values which are today trashed by self-appointed custodians of public good. He smokes, he devours meat and he does not say one bad word about McDonald's, and he is proud of it.

His magnificient delivery sounds casual and effortless, just like your slightly drunk friend talking to you in a bar, but in fact every line is polished to perfection.

You will either love this guy or hate him; either way, you will agree that he is an extremely strong comedian, one of the best in the business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary is angry again - feel the warmth, March 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lock N Load (Audio CD)
A bit older and wiser, Denis Leary drops the over-the-top obnoxiousness that was so wonderful in, "No Cure for Cancer." The presentation here is more honest, and the bones he has to pick are incredibly true. And eclectic! Coffee-flavored coffee, Marv Albert, Catholicism, Michael Flatley, and you morons that ride your bikes on the street - all are grist for his mill, attacked with wit and palpable anger. And that - anger - is the reason his act works so well. It isn't mindless, or done for shock. It is simply the reaction of a tired commen-sense man to annoyance. In a world where everyone has adopted the, "Live and let live" philosophy, it is a relief to hear at least one voice decry, "No! Some things are not alright, or even acceptable, or even tolerable," swearing loudly in between. No one can fly off in a berserk rage quite like Denis Leary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but half the disc is unfunny filler material..., September 13, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lock N Load (Audio CD)
I bought this disc because I like Denis Leary. I really liked 'No Cure for Cancer' and I've liked his film roles. And I don't think he ripped off _anything_ from Bill Hicks (who started out really really funny, then turned into a preachy, liberal, whiner who gets way too much respect just for having died young).

Anyway, the problem with 'Lock 'N Load' as I say in my review title is that there wasn't enough good material for a whole CD so they filled half of it with some unfunny songs, some unfunny bits, and a Janeane 'they-laughed-at-me-in-high-school-cause-I-was-fat Garofalo rant (she's another one who started out really smart & funny and is now just a shrill, annoying, pseudo-intellectual).

All the songs on 'No Cure for Cancer' like 'Voices in My Head', 'Irish folk song' and of course 'A**hole' were great, but here only "Save This' and 'Life's Gonna Suck' are any good. The others are not only not funny, they're barely songs. The lyrics are repeated electronically and interspliced with sound effects and other voices, for no other reason than to fill space.

I ripped this onto my mp3 player (hey, I _did_ buy it!) and after listening to it once I immediately deleted tracks 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 20 because they weren't worth ever listening to again. Track 5, 'Deaf Mute Cocktail Party' for example, is exactly what it sounds like. I'm not the least bit offended at the un-PC-ness of it, it's just a lame concept that when executed does not make you laugh.

On the bright side, the remaining tracks do deliver more of Leary's angry, un-PC, I smoke & I drink, f-the-world attitude. No airline food jokes here.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Wake ... up and smell the maple-nut crunch!!!!", July 13, 2002

Denis Leary is one awesome comedian, I don't care what anyone says. I think he's funny as hell. He is one (ticked) off guy who isn't afraid to show it. You will hear some of the funniest rants and other material that will make you laugh until you're in tears.

The best tracks on the CD are the actual comedy bits that were from the actual performance...

The bits and songs are funny too, but not as good as the original material from the show. Some is not included on this album, while little moments ARE that were never aired on HBO... I wished there could be more of his comedy routine and less bits and sketches. Oh well.

Word of warning: Mr. Leary loves the "F" word. If that's a problem with you, then put the CD down ...All in all, funny CD. Could've been better. It's really better to see him live and in action. Hey....when is this going to come out on VHS? Or on DVD, for that matter. Come on! I'm dropping a hint here! Please, release this out on VHS or DVD ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Denis is F**ing Funny, December 3, 2000

What can I say? Denis Leary is one of the funniest comedians out there! I've been listening to this album, as well as No Cure For Cancer for at least 4 years now, and I still crack up every time I hear them! This cd opens with A**HOLE OF THE DANCE, a hilarious track featuring blows towards Michael Flatley, Irish Cooking, among others. In COFFEE, and BEER, Denis rants about how Beer flavored Beer and Coffee flavored Coffee don't exist anymore... I laughed so hard I was left tearing when I heard these tracks! SAVE THIS and ELVIS AND I are comic songs... PRESIDENT LEARY is a great track, as well, especially with teh controversy that we're getting right now! DENIS FOR PRESIDENT! LOVE BARGE is a really funny song making fun of the Love Boat song, the song INSANE COWBOY (in Africa) leaves me laughing on the floor every time I hear it (it's just so weird it's funny; MY KIDS is a track that every family person can relate to: "Don't buy the toys that make the noise"; LIFE'S GONNA SUCK is another song, and is one of my personal favorites, telling kids that life's gonna suck when you grow up, and then you're gonna die; and LOCK 'N LOAD is a wonderful finalle to the whole cd! (I know I skipped a few tracks) Every single track on this cd is drop dead funny, and if you just listen to the REAL sample-things you'll know that this cd is worth many laughs and so much more! And, if you liked this album, you'll LOVE NCFC (No Cure For Cancer)... if you haven't heard A**HOLE... it's the BEST SONG!

3.0 out of 5 stars great comedy from a great verbal comedian, November 18, 1998
By A Customer

but the songs, sketches, and static bits are a bit overboard, as other reviewers have noted. Also interesting is the transformation we see here: Dennis-the-pissed-off-reactionary from No Cure For Cancer has become Dennis-the-confused-father, trying to make some sense of the changes in the world. That's not to say he's stopped screaming, only that his screaming has taken on a plaintive wail of a man who has found that he is no longer (if he ever was) king of his own castle.

All in all, a good second album, marred only by some ill placed "filler."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Cd although the hbo special was better, October 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lock N Load (Audio CD)
I'm tired of reading about how Denis stole material from Bill Hicks. I've heard Hick's cd's and I thought for the most part they were funny although the political stuff got a little boring. Now here is what I think about this whole stealing thing if you want to pick at things. Hick's stole political type comedy from George Carlin and Sam Kinison, then Andrew Dice Clay stole his love of women bit's from Sam Kinison and then Andrew Stole from Hicks because they both smoke and talk about it and then everyone stole their love of the F-Word from Lenny Bruce and the cycle keeps going. Look because people talk about similar things doesn't mean they stole it. If it makes you laugh then it's all worth it and that's all that really matters. This Cd does just that makes you laugh of course you have to have a high tolerence for foul language but if you've liked any of he other stuff by Denis then you'll like this...now if they'll just put the special on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was the breakthrough, not "No Cure for Cancer", January 8, 2006

"No Cure for Cancer" is the top selling album that catapulted Leary to success, but here he develops into more of a unique individual. People always bug him about ripping off Bill Hicks: On No Cure for Cancer, he may have crossed the line a few times. But by this point he had headed in a different direction; rather than becoming a spiritualist and misanthrope like the late Hicks, Leary got married, had kids, and became the "crazy guy trying to adjust to mundane, family life and never quite fitting in". A bit commercial? Maybe. But Leary's always been a talented, aggressive performer, and here he's working with a fresh perspective as well.
