I purchased a gun safe and bolted it to the floor in a back room as our child approached toddlerhood, obviously because we were concerned for his safety. I was concerned however, that in the dead of night I would not be able to quickly access a weapon in a panic situation, especially since I would in effect lure an intruder into a dead end from which I had no escape if I fumbled with the combination. After extensive research, I settled on the Lock State LS-SC1000 and couldn't be more happy.
I store this little gem in a cabinet out of reach from the little one in the master bedroom. I have been able to access the weapon on the first or second attempt every time I have tested it. It opens right up within a second or two. Practice attempts which I intentionally submitted the wrong finger were denied each time. There are some relative drawbacks but it is what it is, and functions perfectly as such.
First, it will not deter a dedicated attempt to compromise the structure. Though it appears well built, a capable adult with a screwdriver could probably defeat the locking mechanism in a matter of minutes. But at 6 pounds for under $200, I do not see this as a flaw. I did not purchase it to defeat a determined thief, but rather to keep my child safe from the weapon stored within while allowing me nearly immediate access. He is a crafty little bugger but I just don't see any way for him to gain access to the weapon.
Second, it is small. I store my H&K compact USP .40 with a rail mounted light in the safe, and it barely fits. A Ruger P94 .40 will barely fit as well. My 1911 .45 (my first choice home defense weapon) will NOT fit, nor will a Colt Anaconda .44 with a 4" barrel. Again, I do not see this as a flaw. It's supposed to be small, and as such is not designed to house a hand cannon.
All this being said, I am extremely happy with this purchase. It does exactly what I purchased it to do.
