Book Description

June 1999 Aviation Crowood Series
For more than 40 years, Lockheed's C-130 Hercules -- with its large, unobstructed cargo hold and powerful turboprop engines -- has served as the backbone of many an air force's transport commands. First flown in 1954, the C-130 began military service the following year, and went on to make a significant contribution to U.S. military efforts in Vietnam.

4.0 out of 5 stars C-130 Rollin down the strip...., October 12, 2009

This review is from: Lockheed C-130 Hercules (Aviation Crowood Series) (Hardcover)
Although published in 1999, this book stands the test of time...as does the C-130 transport plane. Lockheed built this iron bird back in 1954 and it has been involved in every US military operation since then. Upgraded avoinics and a sound design have kept this plane as important now as it was back then.

Many excellent, clear Black and White photos back up a detailed narrative that traces the history and use of this plane. It has seen service as transport, fueler, gunship, special operations, communications, could drop a tank (Sheridan) even as a bomber. The photos show all aspects of the plane, the inside, cockpit.

While there are some line drawings of the inside of the plane, I would have liked more of the different versions, especially the gunship. The drawings are small to fit the book.

There are color photos to help those who want to see the color schemes used (8 pages). Over 2,000 of these planes were built, reading this book shows why. An excellent addition to those interested in military history, aviation and a peek behind the scenes of what goes into supporting combat operations.
