4.0 out of 5 stars trains and history
a very good movie for the person who wants to know about the development of trains. This is not for the young child, it is very good for information for reports for school and as a teaching aid for geography or history lessons.
a good well made movie for the older person

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
The title should have given away that this was not specifically about trains despite the beautiful picture of the locomotive on the cover. It is more about locomotion than locomotives. Interesting historical piece but not what train fanciers would prefer to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Railroad History in a Nutshell, September 21, 2002
As a 'Live Steam' addict, found this to include a number of International historical viewpoints that added to my appreciation of Steam Locomotion and its role in world history.
The second episode - on the strong British Isles contribution to this advance in technology was important, my perspective had been shaped by the American Steam experience.
If you are into Steam and the Industrial Revolution - this is a 'must have' in your collection to share with your friends; or just to gain a more Global insight into this 150 years of History.

4.0 out of 5 stars The impact of railroads., June 29, 2007

I was expecting a history in the technological development of railroads; instead, the series focused primarily on the social implications and economic impact brought about by the railroads.

For those of you wanting to see a fairly well done piece on the steam engine this is an excellent source. It is broken down into four, concise groups that address different stages of the development, use and evolution of steam power and its' use in motive transportation of goods and people. Were it not for this development the world's economy would not have experienced the dramatic growth witnessed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and actually into todays' economy as well. Freight trains can carry astronomical amounts of weight, goods and people at a fraction of the cost in dollars per mile as compared to other modes of transportation. The differences being time in transit, points of termination and convenience.
This is also just good viewing of steam locomotives too for entertainment.
All Railfans will enjoy this video and learn at the same time.
