5.0 out of 5 stars The Manual for the Steam Locomotive
If you have ever wanted to know how a steam locomotive engineer qualifies for his job, then this is the manual for you. This is, in fact, a text written for locomotive examinations. 3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but directed towards mechanical knowledge, not operations
This is an iteresting book and provides the reader an understanding of steam locomotive systems. The book goes into detail as to the mechanical operation of various systems on a steam locomotive and how to repair/adjust components. However, it does not provide as much information as to how you actually would operatate a steam locomotive as I would have expected.

If you have ever wanted to know how a steam locomotive engineer qualifies for his job, then this is the manual for you. This is, in fact, a text written for locomotive examinations. A section on the description of various locomotive parts and operations is presented, followed by the questions and answers necessary to qualify an engineer for written or oral exams. The manual is very detailed, including the specific workings on valve gear (Walschaert, Baker/Pilloid, Southern), superheating, reversing levers, boiler maintenance, air pumps, injectors, road repairs (both locomotive and tender), throttle operation, and brakes (both locomotive and train). The Locomotive Engineman's Manual is a fine text.

This review is from: The Locomotive Engineman's Manual (Perfect Paperback)
This is a reprint of a early train engineer manual. It gives very detailed instructions down to the name of the individual valves and steam lines. Its a softcover book that you make your engineer friends very happy as they spend hours learning how to fix and maintain a 2 8 8 2 locomotive.

I just gave it as a gift and he has not put the book down for 15min which is a first !
