Book Description

April 2, 2007
Ever wondered how a steam locomotive works and how they were operated and maintained? Well, then this is the book for you!

The Locomotive Up to Date is quite simply the best technical book about steam railroading ever created. It's been called the most vital reference for anyone who wants to become expert in steam power, and the routines practiced by locomotive crews in the late 1890's and early 1900's.

This book was originally issued to crews on the Santa Fe, New York Central, Soo Line, Missouri Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, and many others! When it was originally published in 1899, The Locomotive Up to Date was hailed as: the most definitive work ever published concerning the mechanism that has transformed the American nation: the steam locomotive.

Filled with over 700 pages of text, diagrams and photos, this remains one of the most important railroading books ever written. From steam valves to sanders, trucks to side rods, it s a treasure trove of information, explaining in easy-to-understand language how the most sophisticated machines of the 19th Century were operated and maintained.

This new edition is an exact duplicate of the original, but the pages have been blown up for readability. It's presented in softcover, with attractive full color front and rear. Reformatted as an easy-to-read 8.5x11 volume, it s delightful for railroad enthusiasts of all ages!

Editorial Reviews

Review

If you're a steam engine enthusiast, then McShane's The Locomotive Up to Date and Sinclair's Development of the Locomotive Engine and Locomotive Engine Running & Management are three books your library has to have. Unfortunately only McShane's book has been reprinted, but it might just be the best of the three: it's encyclopedic in its commentary on boilers, engine gear, and so on. No wonder it was standard issue for most railroad engineers in the late 1900s. --Angus Burke Steam Traction Magazine
