5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
These are perfect for all lodge skillets and I also use them on the older pieces of Calphalon that get hot handles. These are so much handier than having to pick up a pot holder repeatedly, you can just slip them on and leave them right through to clean up.

2.0 out of 5 stars May be usefull for some.
May shield heat a touch better than a kitchen glove. They are OK if you are going to use them on the cast iron handles for a few seconds at a time. Anything longer than that and they will get hot and so will your hands. So, unlike what a previous reviewer said, you cannot leave them on while the pot is on the stove, unless you are not cooking long enough for the handles...

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm too hot to handle, July 1, 2004
This review is from: Lodge 2-Piece Hot Handle Holder Set, Red Pepper (Kitchen)
The first thing you need to realize is that when cooking with cast iron, the entire piece gets HOT. It is an even heating surface, and yes, that even includes the handles. That's why Lodge made the Hot Handle Holder Set, and they really hit the nail on the head with this one. The holders fit perfectly on the handles of the pans that they make. They slide on easily and can remain there while you're cooking the item, if it is not near an open flame of course. They protect your hands from heat, even when holding the pan for extended periods of time like while you're cleaning it after cooking. It also makes the handle more comfortable, and provides a pretty good grip. The red peppers are my favorite, but I also have a set of the green salsa holders and they're nice too. Lodge is a company that is known for their quality, and this product is no exception.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works OK, still have to be a little careful., December 19, 2005

This product works pretty well, fitting onto the handle well. The issues with it have been mentioned in other reviews: It's somewhat on the thin side, and can get hot if you leave it on the handle while cooking. Taking it off and back on everytime you manipulate your iron skillet can be annoying, especially if you forget and burn yourself - however, the learning curve is rather short, especially after you burn yourself. And since the skillets are guaranteed to hold an even temperature throughout the whole skillet, you are assured of a nice, even burn to your entire palm.

I would pay a couple of bucks more for the Lodge Max Temp Handle Mitt - it's thicker (so you feel less of the metal handle, giving you a psychological edge in being able to grip it firmly), stays cool longer, and although it's not in festive colors and pattern, it's utility-driven.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very handy!, June 4, 2004

These handle covers are very handy and work well. I bought them with a Lodge cast iron skillet. Glad I got them since I know it would just have been a matter of time before I had burned my hand since I usually use more modern skillets. I am sure I would have forgotten to pick up a pot holder or an oven mit at some point before grabbing the iron handle. I have a gas stove top so the other thing I like about these sturdy handle covers is I don't worry about cloth hanging down from the handle to catch fire.

So, unlike what a previous reviewer said, you cannot leave them on while the pot is on the stove, unless you are not cooking long enough for the handles to get hot (and in that case why even buy them), or if you want to get burned. The choice is yours. Hope this helps.

When cooking with cast iron skillets, these pans get HOT, extending through to the handles. I ordered the hot handle holder sets but it did not reduce the heat from the handle as I expected. Using one of the holders I continued to feel the high heat. But it worked better when I used two of the holders on the hot handle. It's too bad Lodge didn't make one holder strong enough to withstand the heat from the handle. CAUTION: Please note that these mitts are very flammable. Twice, the mitt caught fire from being in contact with the flame from a gas stove. Since these mitts are used to protect the handle from the heat, be careful to leave enough distance between the material and the cooking surface to prevent the mitt from catching on fire.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lover of ironware, October 27, 2004

I love these Lodge iron products, having used the huge 11-pount wok (seasoned it myself) and the also-very-heavy chicken fryer. I always cook with high heat (gas stove) and the handles do get hot. I own a pair of these handle holders and they're fine--no complaints. I don't think I could ever burn myself holding the handle if these are in place but for the price I'd much rather just buy some handy towels and drape them over the handles. I'm happy to have the holders but if I could choose again, I wouldn't buy them; I think those $7 are better spent elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE these handle holders!, October 16, 2007

I only use cast iron on a gas stove and I LOVE this product because it solved the ONLY problem I had with my pans...those hot handles. In case you're getting worried about these being a fire hazard (as other reviews claim) they really aren't UNLESS you leave them on when you place the pan under your broiler! EEEK! I did this and I deserve lots of "boos" for my absent-mindedness! Other than that, if you have your flame up to a normal amount (the flames really shouldn't be shooting up the sides of the pan anyway!) there is no way you'll burn your holders. I've been using mine for four years now (on my stove with blasting BTUs!) and other than my broiler incident, I've been absolutely delighted!

Note: Another benefit besides these holders "being there" when you need them: The design is actually much safer than a pot holder or a clumsy mitt because pot holders tend to drag way closer to the source of the flame and the mitts occasionally made me loose my grip due to their heft.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for when you bake or roast in your skillet, March 4, 2006

Works like one would expect. I use it rather than a pot holder/oven mitt when removing the cast iron from the oven. It's perfect for the task, especially since my hands don't go into oven mitts easily. It is a "unitasker" but worth it for frequent cast iron bakers.

Very nice set, but works best with smaller (10" or smaller) pans. With the 12" skillet, it is so heavy that you need to use 2 hands on each side to move it. It would be nice if the second piece was some sort of cover for the "mini handle" on the other side of the skillet rather than just two identical handle covers.
