Good Quality Hot Pad For A Cast Iron Skillet,
By
This review is from: Lodge 2-Piece Hot Handle Holder Set(multi-color Peppers) (Kitchen)
This is a heavy, good quality fitted hot pad for your cast iron skillet. I have used these hot pads to remove 400F skillets from a hot oven. The skillet had been used to bake cornbread. The hot pad protected my hand from the hot skillet handle while I transfered it from oven to counter. I would buy these again.

Get a few of these -- you'll need them,

We invested in cast-iron cookware recently and bought two packages of these. They are fantastic. They get warm from the heat, but never hot. I tried keeping them on the handles all the way while I cooked, but found that they can burn if they're too close to the flame (I guess that is pretty obvious!) However, if you pull them off the handle halfway so that they are away from the flame, you won't lose them and they'll be there when you need to move the pot. Definitely required for Lodge cookware.

I use cast iron cookware a lot, and used to drape one of those square "hot pads" over the skillet handles just so I wouldn't absent mindedly grab one. These and the other Lodge handle holders are now a staple. I also learned what another reviewer learned, and you keep them halfway up the handle while the heat is on... because they can scorch. You still need oven mitts for baking, but these are top notch for cast iron skillet use.

Regular Lodge Hot Handle, now with Vibrant Peppers!,

These are basically the same as the other Lodge 2 Piece Hot Handle Holder set, except the come decorated with hot peppers. My favorite.
They have a silicon lining inside, which greatly reduces heat. The outside fabric is durable, and the stitching is good. They're great to have around, and these are much more fun than the boring black color.

This may seem like a small thing but it is absoulutely necessary if you have cast iron pans. It will save your hands and fingers from burning a thousand times over. You used to be able to pick these up almost anywhere, but this is the only place I have been able to find them now. Well worth the small cost to save your skin! Highly recommend.

Silver fabric disintegrates,

One thing that irks me no end is an item that is grossly overpriced. A regular rectangular pot holder can be found for $1 or $2 at most stores. Fold one in half, stitch around the edges and you essentially have one of these outrageously priced single function pot holders.
That silvery fabric on the top of this pot holder does nothing to protect the rest of the fabric from the heat. I only used the pot holder whenever I wanted to move the pan, and did not leave it on the handle during cooking. In spite of that, in less than a year, the silver fabric disintegrated, exposing the insulation inside the pot holder. This particular style of pot holder seems to be as scarce as hens teeth in stores and on the Internet, and I guess that is why the price is such a rip-off. A rectangular pot holder does just as well, and can be folded over and sewn if you are so inclined.

I had some of these many years ago and really liked them. However, over the years, I had pots with wooden handles and never thought much about it. Then I had to buy other pots with metal handles and using a regular pot holder was very cumbersome. I found these at Amazon and really like them. In fact I ordered a second set to give to my daughter. The only thing I don't care for is the design (chili peppers). Having the added protection at the opening was another reason to buy these. I would definitely recommend them especially to those just starting to cook.

Too Big for 12" Lodge Cast Iron Skillet,

Unlike the last Lodge handle holder (plain black) that I ordered from Amazon, these pepper-print handle holders are too long to be of any use with my 12" Lodge Cast Iron Skillet! I am very disappointed. The official return window has passed, but I am going to try to return the holders for at least a partial discount. They do me and my husband absolutely no good!

These really work well. Just keep in mind that like any cloth item they are not burn proof. Don't leave them on the pot handle with the flames licking up the sides of the pot! We put them on the handle, move the pot, then take them off the handle. Perfect. My wife loves the colors. Kind of livens things up!

Caution for those with gas cooktops,

After using this a few times with a Lodge 10" skillet on my gas cooktop, I noticed the edge nearest the pan (and the flame) was actually burned away. It seems that our cooktop's big 13,500 BTU burner is just "too hot to handle" for these. If you have a gas cooktop, just be aware of this before purchasing.
But since it's undoubtedly more convenient to use one of these than putting on a mitt every time, and it's really necessary to use something for protection, I just keep the skillet slightly off-center with the handle an extra 1/2" away from the flame to avoid damage. However, I do wish there was a more robust, flame-resistant version. Maybe the ones without a design are more heavy-duty? Also, I notice that the price has more than doubled since I bought a pair in 2009 for six dollars (and yes, I also got free shipping). At the current price of more than twelve, even with free shipping these seem a bit expensive, but I guess they're still worth it for safety. |
