Cast iron cookware is loved by many for its particular thermal properties. Its heavy material conducts heat very evenly, and browns food particularly well. However, not everyone is thrilled by the need to "season" cast iron. Lodge attempts to solve this particular problem by producing a line of enamel-coated cookware. One such piece is the three-quart apple-shaped pot/Dutch oven.

This pot can be used on the stovetop or in the oven. The one I have is coated in a particularly glossy red (it's really quite impressive), and I have to admit that the apple shape--complete with leaf-shaped stainless steel handle--is quite nifty.

A bean dish that we made in this pot gave us the perfect opportunity to test out how easy it was to clean. The care instructions recommend hand-washing due to the harshness of dishwasher cleansers. After two hours in the oven, the underside of the lid was quite splattered with dried-on juices and the pot itself had the usual cooked-on ring where the food had reduced down. I expected this to be difficult to clean, but it wiped right off.

It's recommended that if you use this on the stovetop you use it on low to medium. Plan for a long start-up time if you need a soup to come to a simmer, but once it gets going a low heat setting works wonderfully. The cast iron does a remarkable job of distributing the heat evenly. In the oven this piece can be used at pretty much any temperature under 500 degrees F.

In short, if you don't mind the weight of the pot and want something you can slow-cook a soup, bean dish, stew, or something similar in, Lodge's enamel-coated line is a great choice. It's easy to clean and even-heating. It even does a wonderful job of keeping a soup warm on the stove once you've turned off the heat so you can go back for seconds!

I have always loved the utility of cooking with cast-iron and until now, have never enjoyed having to look at it in my kitchen! This whimsical but tenacious vessel is ideal for roasting, stewing or baking and its seemingly edible, candy-apple, gloss-enameled finish and sleek stainless-steel leaf-shaped handle present beautifully on any table-top or sideboard. Whether on your stove or as a gift, this will surely be the most appealing piece of cookware you encounter!

How can I begin to describe how much I love this pot and how often I use it? It cooks like a dream - everything from sauces to stews and anything else you could think of!

It's also made a great addition to my kitchen as a show piece - people are drawn to it and they just want to know where I got such a unique piece (and for half the price of the French version)!

Way to go Lodge!

This is a review of Lodge's beautiful Apple Dutch Ovens. In the video Matt goes over some of the uses and the quality of these Apples.

I certainly could not understand why on earth my husband would want to buy more than one Apple. It was obvious to me that these apples would never even feel heat, let alone make it into an oven!

However, he has shown me the uniqueness of this piece! They really are great and certainly solid. This is the kind of quality that you have come to expect from Lodge.

This pot combines the excellent heat retention of cast iron, the low maintenance (comparatively) of enamel, and an element of whimsy into a near-perfect kitchen essential. The pot itself is a nice size for small family cooking. Prior to purchasing this, I did most of my cooking in a giant 7qt enamel CI pot that was a pain to clean and took up a lot of stove real estate. With it's taper and small footprint, this pot fits perfectly on a small burner, while still having plenty of capacity to cook for a family of four or five. The taper allows this pot to coexist with my Lodge Signature 12" Skillet on the same half of the stove, and allows me to actually make use of the other two burners.

I'd like to give this pot 4.5 stars, but I can't, so 4 stars it is. The one complaint I have is that the stainless steel leaf handle, while attractive and reasonably functional, is not as rigid as I'd like it to be. When picking up the lid, I've found I have to grasp both the 'stem' and the 'leaf', otherwise the leaf part alone tends to flex. Maybe this flexibility is just a characteristic of the design, but it makes me nervous that years of semi-careless use and metal fatigue might eventually spell an end to the leaf part.
**
All things considered, I am very pleased with this pot. It is perfectly sized, functions well, and looks fantastic.

I could never say enough wonderful things about this casserole...If You Enjoy Comfort Style Cooking This Is A Must Item...I Spray the lid and bottom with a cooking spray every time I use it...I would not recommend that you put it in the dish washer ...clean up is such a breeze ...it just wipes clean with a sponge...always use thick potholders when handling ...I use a heavy cast iron trivet or stovetop when serving...keeps food warm for a very long time...you can make casseroles ahead of time and put in the fridge and then pop in the oven...this is truly a Casserole that will last for Generations...
