5.0 out of 5 stars Lodge Won't Warp, January 19, 2009

I got tired of replacing warped grill plates, the accessory grills for cooking shrimp, scallops, and small vegies. The Lodge cast iron grill has not warped after several grillings at very high heat. And clean up is as easy as cleaning the main grill.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Life to Old Grill, April 15, 2008

This review is from: Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Barbecue Grill/Grate (Kitchen)
First, the grill is as the image uploaded by Steven. Second, I disagree with the reviewer from Jupiter that "gas grills are a waste of money".

I have a 7-year old bottom of the chain gas grill, one with the 17-inch dual burners and a porcelain coated grill. It burned foods quite often and in the past two years I had been contemplating many newer versions with cast iron grate but they were all too big for my need. Holding down my tears, I forked out half the price of a similar new grill for a new heat plate and burner to get by, then I found this grate and could not be happier. Well, actually I could if they make it larger, say about 14x20 which still fits all standard grills while giving a lot more cooking surface. I withheld one star for this.

For cooking, the uneven flames produced by the cheap grill are now intercepted by the cast iron grate and spread out evenly. You can read elsewhere for what to be liked (sears, brown, ...) or disliked (maintenance, weight,...) about cast iron and decide for yourself, but the fact that it turns botchy flames into even heat alone is worth a try.

I don't think we are going to get a new grill any time soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little grill, March 21, 2009

First one arrived broken due to poor packaging but the second one we received is great. It's typical Lodge quality (very good). It may not be clear from the picture, but it doesn't have long holes in it, it has regular grill lines that span the narrowest width. There are molded handles on both ends that curve up. One side has a lip that angles up and on the opposite side it angles down. It has a base support along the bottom edge so that it will sit flat (even with the lower lip on the opposite side). I have used this under our broiler as another reviewer suggested and it works great. However, it was probably designed to be used with a camp stove.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Upgrade for the Sportsman Grill, April 13, 2011
This review is from: Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Barbecue Grill/Grate (Kitchen)
The Sportsman Grill is a really nice tabletop grill. However, the OEM grate has some short comings. It's very easy to slide the food off the edge. If you're preparing only small or single portions, it uses the charcoal you were trying to save by not firing up the Weber.

This solves those shortcomings and improves the cooking. This grate has an edge on three sides and practically clips onto the fire bowl of the Sportsman Grill. Portions requiring a turner spatula (veggies) can be chased to the edge and it don't flop off.

It sits an inch and a half closer to the fire and heat, reducing coal by about a third. A single layer of 12-14 briquettes can be spread across the fire grate providing the full span of the cooking grate with minimal fuel.

That clip on effect? The long edges have small ridges on the underside probably intended to keep it from sliding across your kettle grill. The inside dimension of those ridges is exactly the width of the Sportsman. These alignment rails open new heat control opportunities. The corners over hang the fire bowl corners providing cool spots on the four corners. With the heat in one one end of the fire bowl, the grate can be slid to one side to quickly move on or off the heat.

And, of course, it has all the advantages of a cast iron gridiron. That said, shop around, this is by far not the best price w/ shipping.

Great grill
Heavy, clean immediately after use or be prepared to scrub.
Allows for veggies to be grilled without falling through.
We use cast iron for most cooking.

It leaves really nice photo-shoot-style grill marks on the steak. Much nicer heat distribution than the wire grill on the Weber. Fits perfectly.

Why does the product shipped not match the picture shown? Is the picture of an older model or is the product shipped old stock?
