5.0 out of 5 stars I'm in love with Lodge cast iron
This is an awesome grill. If you're carnivores, you will not believe how delicious it grills steaks. You just have to follow their directions to take care of the iron which is no big deal. My first piece, the 12" skillet, I bought unseasoned. It was a bit of a mess (though still worth it), but I decided to buy the rest with Lodge's preseasoning. Every time you use it it...

3.0 out of 5 stars needs a better picture
I really wanted a pre-seasoned cast iron skillet to replace the series of 'disposable' teflon coated ones that I've been using, but when I recieved this one, I was a bit disappointed for 2 reasons. As someone else already stated, make sure you coat it well with oil on the first use. Even though I did, the eggs still stuck. Which leads to my second problem. The picture...

The picture does not show the large gutter on the flat side. That makes it rather unusable for eggs, pancakes, etc. I tried it anyway, trying to keep the eggs away from the gutter, but they dripped in, and my fried eggs turned into a stuck-on long drippy mess in the gutter. I wouldn't even try pancakes on it. :-( It would cost more in shipping to return it than it costs (almost!) since it's so heavy, so I'll keep it and use it in the oven and on the grill, but I'm unhappy that that picture does not show that gutter. I'm going to order the larger griddle, but that one is going back if it has the same gutter!

I now own the 8" skillet, the 12" skillet, the 5 qt. dutch oven, and the grill/griddle. Amazon's prices are insanely cheap, especially with the free shipping. I got all of these pieces for about [$$]. Almost half the price of other cooking web sites!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in ..., January 26, 2006

Lodge is the leader in cast-iron cookware. Made in USA for more than 100 years, it's heavy, reliable, great stuff. Cast iron takes a little effort. You have a relationship with it, unlike teflon type pans. You learn to work with it and it will reward you with incredible performance.

I've had the non-preseasoned version of this griddle for about ten years. At first I was disappointed in the performance but over time it got better and better. Nothing sticks to it now. Cleanup is easy with just a quick wipe needed. The cast iron is so good at spreading the heat out that it has very even temperature.

Pre-seasoned is a bit of a misnomer. The "seasoning" process is never complete- Lodge Logic has simply jump started the process. It does get better and better. At first maybe only use it with an oil or with fatty foods. As time goes by the need for added oil goes down. I can make pancakes or french toast with no oil or butter. I generally give it a light spray of cooking spray though.

My only complaints are that with the grease gutter the total cooking area is somewhat small, plus pancakes will flow into the gutter if you aren't careful. I never use the grill side but from experience with my Lodge grill pan I'm sure it would do a great job.

I'm sure that this griddle will just keep getting better and better as the years go by. I can't say that for coated nonstick cookware- that seems to have a life of about five years in my family.

Note that your burner spacing is important. This size has a cooking area (not including the grease gutter or handles) of 16-3/4" x 7-3/4". The overall size is about 21" x 9". It fits the stove in my camper and my Weber Gas Go-Anywhere Grill perfectly. It does not fit my stove at home or my Coleman propane stove because those burners are spaced 11" apart. For those stoves I am considering getting the larger Lodge griddle where the handles are inset. All the Lodge products are listed on the "lodgemfg" homepage. Since cast iron is heavy, shipping can be expensive so be sure you get free SuperSaver shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, December 30, 2003

This review is from: Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Iron Griddle (Kitchen)
I had gotten a reversible grill/griddle from Wisconsin and was completely disappointed (food burned on easily, never washed off and was just a mess), so I was a little shaky about buying another, but I really wanted the convienence of a reversible grill/griddle. But the Lodge is great: food just flakes up off of it (no soap!), making cleaning quick and easy. I can cook pancakes, bacon and eggs in the morning and then grilled cheese in the afternoon and one doesn't taste like the other. I'm just very happy with this product. However, it is heavy, so be prepared for that. And with the pre-seasoned has handles, so it may or may not fit into your oven. Be prepared for that. And every time you cook with it, you need to oil it. Be prepared for that, too. But other than that, this is a great product that a kitchen is lucky to have.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Lodge Pro griddle is better, October 17, 2002

Why? No loop handles on the pro griddle. Why does it matter, well the handles make it too long to fit inside your oven, or ontop of your stove.

If you are running a camp, maybe these handles are the better way to go, for the rest of us, get the Lodge Pro griddle instead.

I am new to cast iron cookware and this is also my first stovetop griddle. I love that it's pre-seasoned, but even then, I managed to burn my pancakes on the first try. I'd turned the electric burners on to High: rookie mistake. Now I set it to Medium-High. Problem solved. My husband swears hamburgers taste better on this grill than in our George Foreman grill.

The cons of this are characteristic of any cast iron cookware. First of all, it's HEAVY. Storing it was a problem until I found it fit perfectly in the drawer beneath my oven. And unlike a previous reviewer, I had no trouble with this not fitting in my oven or on my stove top (we have a slide-in range; it might not fit as well on a free-standing range where the temp control panel might get in the way). Maintenance is another issue, but care instructions are included, so read them carefully. You will need a metal scourer to keep it clean and lots of nonstick spray to keep it rust-free. I wrap my grill in aluminium foil after cleaning to keep it from getting everything else greasy.

Bottomline: cooks great, high maintenance, and lasts multiple lifetimes.

Great grill, but after you follow all the instructions, add this info: pre-heat the grill and then coat it well with good canola oil. Then lightly coat the food you're cooking, too. I had a big mess to clean when I didn't do this. Great for rainy days when cooking outside doesn't work.

3.0 out of 5 stars smallish surface space-uneven heat, October 10, 2005
This review is from: Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Iron Griddle (Kitchen)
The logic griddle did two things I wanted--put grill marks on my food and didn't stick. However, the surface was not as large as I had hoped for in a griddle that spans two burners. Two good sized pancakes don't really fit across it, and if you use the entire surface, the items in the middle between the burners don't get as much heat and cook unevenly.

I have taken this griddle to Vermont and used it on a gas range, as well as on my smooth-top electric range at home. It works about the same on both.

I was able to make professional looking panini sandwiches with nice grill marks and no sticking.

My pancakes cooked unevenly and had to be watched very vigilantly.

I gave the griddle 3 stars because it is preseasoned and food did not stick and it basically does what is says it does, although my expectations led me to hope for more.

This is absolutely perfect for use outside, e.g. camping, on the grill, fire pit, etc. It's also great indoors for pancakes, eggs and hashbrowns. However forget grilling meats indoors unless your range hood fan has "super turbo setting". I attempted to grill steaks and within 5 min. the whole house filled with smoke and the smoke alarms started screaming. (I hate that )! With that said, used in the ways I stated above I have no problem recommending it. This griddle is a great addition to my growing cast iron collection
