This review is from: Lodge Original Finish 6-Quart Cast-Iron Camp Dutch Oven (Kitchen)
A dutch oven is one of the most versatile items you can find. Many people I know are intimidated by cooking with dutch ovens, but when you take a few minutes to learn how, you can use it to cook anything! It can be used with variety of foods: stews, cakes, cobblers, breads, poultry, vegetables (basically anything you make in a conventional oven). If you happen to forget to pack your skillet when you go camping, turn over the lid and put it back on the dutch oven. Voila! Instant skillet-type cooking surface!

Having used a variety of dutch ovens in my life, I can tell you for sure, Lodge dutch ovens are the best. They are durable and well-crafted. If you have ever had the experience of cooking with a dutch oven that was not a Lodge, you will know what I mean.

You should look for a dutch oven that has a lip on the lid for keeping coals on, and sturdy legs, to keep from crushing the coals. Lodge dutch ovens have these features, and are made of quality cast iron. Lodge also has many accessories for cooking, such as lid lifters and lid rests, inserts for muffins, etc.

Dutch ovens make a great gift for the camper in your life. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous Lodge product, June 28, 2006
This review is from: Lodge Original Finish 6-Quart Cast-Iron Camp Dutch Oven (Kitchen)
This is the 2nd and most recent addition to our rapidly-growing family Lodge inventory. The size is excellent for our family of 5. Between this and our 14" deep camp Dutch Oven, I've almost decided to get rid of the RV oven! I can't believe we've camped for 7 years without a Dutch Oven.

The only thing I don't like about the original finish is the smell in the house during the seasoning process. I'd recommend "cooking" it for the hour in the morning before work then turning off the oven and leaving the house. An attic fan would've come in very handy.

You simply can't beat cast iron cookware, and Lodge makes the best. Don't let the price fool you. I'm in the process of throwing out all of my "nonstick" cookware and replacing it with Lodge cast iron.

The effectiveness of this dutch oven lies in its design which served chuck wagons a century ago and campers today! Cast Iron is ALWAYS a good value for the money and it's indestructable (I'm still using my mother's Lodge skillet that she got for a wedding gift in 1954). This dutch oven, designed specifically for the camp or fireplace cook, goes from the fire to the table with ease. It stews and bakes beautifully - get a dutch oven cookbook and learn how to make campfire biscuits as well as those stews and chilis! Also makes a fabulous wedding, shower, or housewarming gift. Forget expensive wedding registries - buy the bride a lodge dutch oven and skillet. She'll hand them down to the next generation. Every camper can use this and so can every backyard griller. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Oven, October 8, 2005
This review is from: Lodge Original Finish 6-Quart Cast-Iron Camp Dutch Oven (Kitchen)
This was an unseasoned cast Iron and needed to be seasoned at a high temp of about 500º - 550º The manual stated to do it at 350º but that was not hot enough.
This is a great Dutch Oven and very well built, will last more than a life time.
Shipping was slow took about 5-7 days before they even shipped it. So order way before needed.

I bought one of these babies, and decided in one week that I was going to be a camp cook. I invited a couple of friends to a park on a cool evening in October in Iowa. I had laid in the wood and adult beverages. I made a seven grain rye roll recipe at home and let them rise cool. My first time camp bead baking was simply spectacular. I did two pans and the first was almost gone before the second was done. It may be a fluke, but if you are a good cook and you have the proper intuitive skills, this type of cooking is not that much different than at home. Just a note, the shallower ovens such as this are referred to as bread ovens- mine did just fine-deeper ones are the stewing/roasting type.

At first glance, it would be easy to be critical of this marvellous 6-Quart Camp Dutch Oven. There's no thermostat, no door, no shelves, no connectors for hooking up to the gas main, no friendly tolerance of drunken British stag parties, no digitised mincing electronic voice telling you your meat is good and juicy, and even pre-school kids know that 4 quarts make a whole, not 6 as advertised. That's at first glance, though. A closer inspection reveals the meticulous detail and craftmanship that has gone into shaping this wonderful kitchen must-have. From the faux-ceramic egg-glaze wash, to the bakelite-effect lid handle, this beauty oozes quality.
An excellent addition to any household.
