5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality, nice tool, something extra
This is something that you can live without... but it is a nice extra if you are looking to make dutch oven outdoor cooking more enjoyable.

This stand is a nice size and folds nicely to tuck in with your camp cooking tools, and works well.

While this lid rest is a good tool, let me tell you of a GREAT one:

1.0 out of 5 stars Love Lodge, but mine must have been a lemon!
Over the past year I've purchased quite a bit of Lodge preseasoned cast iron cookware and I simply could not be happier with it. Over the past year I've purchased quite a bit of Lodge preseasoned cast iron cookware and I simply could not be happier with it. This seemed like the perfect solution for our "where do we put this thing" question when grilling meat in the grill pan and using round grill press. It did work perfectly, for about 5 times. Then the bolt that holds the two pieces together simply snapped in two. I was so frustrated that I threw it away (stupid as I should have just replaced the bolt)... but I'm still very disappointed in the quality of this item especially compared to the very high quality cookware I have from Lodge. I also wanted to note that mine arrived very clearly marked "MADE IN CHINA" which I was very surprised by as I thought all lodge products were made in the USA and the product description states this to be true.

Buy with caution!

My favorite Dutch Oven tool is the MAIR Dutch oven lid lifter. I haven't seen it on Amazon.com but you can search online for it. It grips the lid by the loop and gives you complete control without getting ashes in your pot while checking it. You can also use it to turn the lid over to remove the ashes when ready to serve. Has an extra hook on the end to aid in lifting the Dutch oven by its bail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lodge lid holder, July 15, 2005

Great lid holder to have next to your Camp dutch oven. It keeps my lid from burning the table I set it on. It can also be used with the regular dutch oven to raise up so you can put charcaol under it. I have not used it yet to flip the lid over for eggs and such. It looks very easy to use that way though.

This is a great item! a must for dutch oven cooking. It does it's job perfectly. It is cast iron so it can also rust and should be cared for like the rest of your cast iron cook ware. I simply spay it with oil every once and a while. As for for my cookware, I do not wash mine. I wipe it out good and place it in the fire and burn it clean. After it cools wipe it out with some newspaper and spray it with oil and your good to go.

Dutch is a lot of work but is quite addictive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another must-have for your DO cooking gear, June 28, 2006
This review is from: Lodge Original Finish Camp Dutch Oven Lid Stand (Kitchen)
I accidently left mine at home recently and felt lost without it. This provides a clean surface on which to place the lid when stirring. I haven't used it yet to flip the lid over and use it as a griddle but am looking forward to doing so. For me, it's as important as the lid lifter.

My husband and I go camping at least once a month and then for 6 weeks to the southwest, we have also done Dutch Oven cooking on Llama packing trips, not having a lid holder would mean dirt or other things on you lid that may get into your food, they are a must....we have several!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lid AND Pot Stand, September 6, 2009
This review is from: Lodge Original Finish Camp Dutch Oven Lid Stand (Kitchen)
The Lodge lid stand is one of those little gizmos that at first glance seems like something you don't really need to buy, for you will be able to find something around the house that will serve nicely as a make shift version. The true reality however is that very rarely will you find anything that quite does the job so easily and effortlessly as this little item. Anyone that has ever been camping knows that if your going to use a dutch oven or pot of any kind over an open fire, you will need some kind of apparatus to hang it or suspend it slightly over the flames or hot coals. Sitting it right on the fire is a no no and never works. This folding metal tool does the job easily and is invaluable for camp cooking in my opinion. I would recommend buying two to either have two pots going at once, or to use one as a lid holder when you're checking or serving your delicious concoction. Having a clean place to set down the lid of a pot is something hardly anyone thinks about until they are actually in the act and standing there lid in hand and spinning around with it. Setting it down on a rock or in some grass and possibly picking up a crawly little varmint that will become additional "seasoning" for your stew will definitely have you appreciating this very resourceful little item... Highly recommdned...

The user's insert says that charcoal can be placed under the inverted lid support for the likewise inverted Dutch oven lid and the combination makes a great griddle. I had to try it to believe it. I'm a believer! A few layers of briquettes are needed in order to get it hot enough to sear meats. I found that if the briquettes are placed on a flat surface, the lower ones get starved for oxygen and extinguish. But if a way is devised to raise the lid support and charcoal on a (Weber, or other) grill up at least an inch, all the charcoal will continue to burn and the griddle/lid will reach the requisite high temp. I use a woodstove chimney/top thermometer as a temperature gauge. I've purchased a second lid support so as to be able to double my pancake output. (I have 10" and 12" Dutch ovens.) I assume the lid support used as such would work equally as well as a 'side burner' for all manner of cast iron griddles, pans, or pots.

Just like everyone else, I find the workmanship excellent and item useful in a regular kitchen. Cast iron lids are too heavy and too hot to be placed on the "average" kitchen surface.
Can be used as a trivet for a large skillet too.

Solid product, as expected. This unit folds, so it takes up less space in transport than my other lid stands. Keeps my lids out of the dirt, and my skillets (and other non-legged cookware) up out of the coals. I use two of them with my griddle, so now I don't need to take along a stove to make pancakes in camp. Very stable and sturdy lid stand, same great quality as my other Lodge cast iron cookware.
