The American-based company Lodge has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. No other metal is as long-lasting and works as well for spreading and retaining heat evenly during cooking. Now Lodge has added a new component: stainless steel. Handsome and contemporary, the award-winning Signature Series gleams with marine grade 304 stainless-steel handles that are riveted to the cast-iron body for strength. Specially designed silicone gaskets around the rivets prevent water entrapment, so rust won't become an issue. Each Signature Series pan comes foundry seasoned and ready to use right out of the box.

This 7-quart Signature Series Dutch oven makes a beautiful addition to any kitchen. The pot's two gleaming stainless-steel loop-style handles add a real touch of class to the black cast iron, as does the ergonomic stainless-steel knob on the tight-fitting lid. But it's not all about looks-the 12-by-4-inch cast-iron pot slowly simmers soups and stews on the stovetop and bakes pasta casseroles and chicken-and-dumplings in the oven. Both the base and lid are oven-safe, so a dish can be started on the stovetop and finished in the oven. The pre-seasoned finish helps prevent food from sticking and rust from developing. To take care of the cast-iron finish, simply scrub the Dutch oven by hand after use with a stiff brush (never steel wool) under hot water, and dry immediately. If the handles discolor from oven-use or over-heating, they may be cleaned with stainless-steel cleaner. Cast in the USA, the oven matches other pieces in the Signature Series and is covered with a lifetime warranty. --Ann Bieri

I've had this dutch oven for a while now and absolutely love it. It's beautiful and functional. If you take care of it after each use (don't soak in water or use soap) it will last many lifetimes. I will definitely be buying the other Lodge Signature Series items to complete the set.

I bought this for my husband so maybe he should do the review! He is a budding Jamie Oliver and loves to try out new recipes. He has used it a few times and each time the meat he has cooked has been very tender and the entire meal delicious. The only complaint is how heavy it is once there is food in it, but as my husband is the one using it, I shouldn't really complain! I would buy this again.

The finish quality of the Signature piece is better than typical Lodge products. The stainless handles are attractive until the pan is used. Mine are building up burned on grease stains. The drip system under the lid is very effective.

If you are adept at cleaning and seasoning cast iron, the ease of cleaning and maintenance is its best feature. Cleaning the stainless handles is difficult. I always coat my cast iron with peanut oil and bake several times to improve the factory seasoning and then lightly coat each pan with peanut oil after each use. I have decided to not clean the stainless handles. I am going to coat them with oil and let them build up a uniform coating. Keeping them shiny isn't worth the effort but the current blotchy appearance is unattractive.

The detergents and cleaners that are required to clean the handles are hard on the seasoning of the pan. If you can tolerate discolored handles, you will love this pan. Otherwise buy something else.

The pan is large. A curry recipe or other chicken stew will start with 3 pounds of legs and thighs or a whole chicken.

I am not going to go into detail of all the pros and cons of this pan. I think they are well listed by the other reviewers however, if you are looking for this pan and wondering why the price has jumped drastically, it is because Lodge has temporarily discontinued the "L" Series (enameled cast iron) and the "Signature" Series (cast iron with stainless accents). You will not find these again till they re-introduce them with new look and design tentatively late 2013. So if you love the signature series buy them while you can or wait till they come back. I personally dont recommend the "L" series over the "Color" series which is not being discontinued but if you really wanted an "L" series get it while you can.

I did read some questions I will address. The bottom of this dutch oven is completely smooth with no logo. The lid does have the self basting spikes as well.
