This review is from: Loft Exile V (Audio CD)
I had read that this double disc is 130+ minutes of music that has to be heard to be believed. That is true.
Mr. Gratkowski has assembled a top notch group of improvisers who are astute listeners as well. The first disc has Frank on reeds, Herb Robertson on trumpet, Wolter Wierbos on trombone, Dieter Manderscheid and Wilbert DeJoode on basses, and Gerry Hemingway and Michael Vatcher on drums. The second disc has the same players plus Tobias Delius on tenor sax.
The music is improvisation of the highest order. It moves along through peaks and valleys, barely audible one moment, barely contained the next. There is never a sense of density or clutter with the two basses and two drummers. There is a sense of open space and careful dialogue.
I like Mr. Gratkowski's music. His quartet with Wierbos, Manderscheid, and Hemingway is special and those discs are worth searching for. This 2 cd set is something different and has the magical ingredient to make it outstanding. Definetely worth purchasing. It does have to be heard to be believed.
