Nice combination of jazz and chillout,
This review is from: Loft Party: New York City (Audio CD)
Loft Party NYC is an instant favorite of mine. The first CD contains lots of jazz and upbeat songs. The second CD is much mellower, but still captures one in the same way. The last song, "Salsa House (M's Salsa dub)" ends Disc 2 with a Balearic feeling, as if on Ibiza. Recommended. I like it better than most of the Afterdark series, but it is tied with Afterdark San Francisco.

Great chill music for a dinner party,

It's so hard to find upbeat energetic music that isn't too techno. This CD is great for any party and is enjoyed by all age groups. Highly recommended.

SPOKEN WORD TRACKS GET REALLY OLD, REALLY FAST...,
This review is from: Loft Party: New York City (Audio CD)
... this is my biggest pet peeve regarding house music compilations - spoken word tracks generally do not hold up well to repeated listening. Do we really need to hear yet another homie yappin' on and on about nothing in particular?
Taking it one step further in an attempt at being "ultra-chic" with the ultra-pretentious, the DJ even throws in a French-speaking Serge Gainsbourg wannabe muttering some Pepe Le Pew nonsense. All it does is annoy the listener into skipping the track after they've heard it more than a few times and tarnish what could have been an otherwise pleasant (and uninterrupted) listening experience. Calling all deejays: please - PLEASE - enough with the spoken word tracks already! You already enjoy the privilege of battering us with your tastes - could you at least spare us the aggravation of having to listen to yet another house music Messiah rhapsodizing about his personal life philosophy? If I really wanted to hear some self-aggrandizing balloon-knot yammering on about this, that and the other thing seven ways to next Sunday, I'd be buying rap music, not house music.

A fresh Journeys by DJ for 2006,
By
This review is from: Loft Party: New York City (Audio CD)
Journeyman here, who mixed the album, so consider this more a guided rummage through the crate than a review. Vibewise this continues a la JDJ After Hours series, so if you liked those, you oughta love this. Hotties include the first CD airing of the super-rare, Beat Foundation (pre - Groove Armada) mix of 'My Love Turns to Liquid' - to my mind worth the price of admission alone. Two more must-haves-if-you-don't-already are Murk's Funky Green Dogs and the hellraiser Brown James. A lot of the tracks combine the latest fat production levels with a classic '90s flavor, for example giants of the genre Blaze colliding with Mateo & Matos, Mattie Hellbron with SUMO and Paolo Rocha with Julien Jabre from back in the day. The mix was programmed to take you from soulful to upbeat party mode, into the realms of dreamy hammock house and back again, with some interesting vocal themes and quirky surprises along the way to mess with your head. Enjoy the ride!
