5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Log Home Owners, August 16, 2009
This review is from: Log Home Care and Maintenance: Everything You Need to Know to Buy, Maintain, and Enjoy Your Log Home (Paperback)
Log Home Care and Maintenance by Jim Davis is an excellent resource for all log home owners or anyone considering building or buying a log home. As the owner of Log Options, a business dedicated to the care and maintenance of log homes, I purchase this book in bulk to provide for home owners when performing log inspections. The book covers all the important aspects of log homes from understanding the wood chemistry, inspections, cleaning, maintenance, repairs, and much more. It is very well written and easy to understand. This is also an invaluable resource if you are planning a do it yourself project. There is a glossary in the back with common log home terms and information on where to purchase log home supplies. Also included is a "Finish/Sealant Estimating Chart" to help you calculate how much product you will need for your project. I highly recommend this book to help care for your log home.

Good introduction to owning a log home and some repairs that will need to be done on occasion. We probably needed a book titled "old rotten insect-eaten log home restoration" but this one did a good job of covering the basics, and if you follow the advice, you'll never get to the point our home did when we purchased it.

It does have good information on log repair, maintenance, stains, etc. Overall a good book for beginning log home owners and is easy to read.

I bought this book for my dad as a gift soon after he bought his first log cabin. He said it is one of the most thoughtful, best gifts he's ever received! Caring for and maintaining a log home on your own is no easy task, and this book provides ample information on what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. Most importantly, it gives a starting ground for those who are new to the log cabin world. He can now interact with speciality contractors and know he is not getting taken advantage of.

There is so much misinformation out there on the maintenance of a log home it was great to finally get some definitive answers. For example our builder told us that we should not be concerned about "checking" since the splits always stopped before the center of the log. This book has an excellent section on the repair of checks and also the overall need to apply sealants as part of an ongoing maintenance program. After reading this you begin to see your log home not as a static structure but one that flexes and breathes with the seasons. Had I read this before building I'm not sure that I would have opted for the whole "real log" full Monty. Might have gone with the log siding (although that has issues of its own too). Overall would recommend this to anyone with a log home.
