5.0 out of 5 stars Fine mat cutter for the careful amateur
The Logan 450 lets you make perfect mats with consistency and accuracy. It handles full sized 32 x 40 mat boards and both 1/8" and 3/16" foam core boards. This is a big, solid, well-made device. You need the top of a table or workbench to use it. There's a smaller model (Logan 250) that takes 20 x 16 mat board, but it's more economical to buy the 32 x 40 boards...

1.0 out of 5 stars whimpy squaring arm
the 450 is good. however, the 5 1/2" squaring arm is totally inadequate. further, for narrow cuts you may only get 1" worth of squaring arm. therefore i would rate the 450 as a poor machine. logan must have had the same view because they discontinued the 450 and replaced it with the 450-1. the 450-1 has a nice calibrated squaring arm. i wish i had known that i was...

The Logan 450 lets you make perfect mats with consistency and accuracy. It handles full sized 32 x 40 mat boards and both 1/8" and 3/16" foam core boards. This is a big, solid, well-made device. You need the top of a table or workbench to use it. There's a smaller model (Logan 250) that takes 20 x 16 mat board, but it's more economical to buy the 32 x 40 boards.

I bought it because I make 8x10 and 11x14 prints often enough to make it a worthwhile convenience. There's a huge choice of colors if you go to an art store and buy full sheets of mat board rather than pre-cut mats, and the cost of a full sheet is about the same as one precut 8x10 or 8x12 precut mat.

Just follow the instructions very carefully, and take your time. There's a DVD packed inside that worth looking at - maybe worth looking at a couple of times. The printed instruction book is quite clear. There's a stop included for repetitive cuts that makes it easy to cut two or three mats exactly the same size.

You may also want a 16" or longer steel or aluminum ruler. If you're careful, you won't need to do any touch-up surgery with a utilty knife (razor knife) but it's not a bad idea to have one close by just in case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Product, October 6, 2007
This review is from: Logan 450 Intermediate 40 in. cutter 450 intermediate (Kitchen)
I purchased a Logan 301-S mat cutter on Thursday 10/4/07. I opened the box and the first thing I did was watch the videos. On Friday 10/5/07 I returned the still new and unused 301-S and exchanged it for the 450 Intermediate. I didn't even know what a mat cutter looked like until Wednesday 10/3/07. I purchased a 32 x 40 mat board and Friday evening I cut my first mats. I cut 6, 11 x 14 mats and from the cutouts I cut 6, 8 x 10 mats. I cut 12 perfect mats my first time using the Logan 450 Intermediate mat cutter never having seen or used any mat cutter before!! This mat cutter is AWESOME and easy to use for the greenest beginner like myself. Construction is of high quality and the price is great!
Unlike the reviewer that said the scale is off, mine cut exactly right on the dot. Maybe he can call them and they'll replace it. I found out right away that their customer support is far above and beyond the normal.
A great product from a great company.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simplex Mat Cutter - 40", March 12, 2007
This review is from: Logan 450 Intermediate 40 in. cutter 450 intermediate (Kitchen)
If you are considering a new mat cutter I strongly suggest you take a closer look at this unit. Logan is a well known name in the framing industry, and the Intermediate 450 would be an excellent choice for consideration. This unit has been updated by Logan and offers most of the features of the more expensive Simplex 750. After using the 450 I wouldn't be able to justify the extra cost for the 750. 4.0 out of 5 stars I love this machine!, August 23, 2007
This review is from: Logan 450 Intermediate 40 in. cutter 450 intermediate (Kitchen)
After having used the hand-held Dexter mat cutter for something like 30 years...and almost NEVER being pleased with the results, I finally gave up and bought the Logan 450. I had read some less than enthusiastic reviews elsewhere, so I wasn't sure. But, I gave it a try, and I'm so glad I did.

The DVD pretty much gave me all the information I needed to get started. It's touted as a "45-minute DVD," which is, I guess, technically correct. But, the amount of time devoted to each product from their line is much, much less. Nevertheless, it was enough of an overview. The written instructions are clear and logical. Within the hour, I had set up, practiced a bit and then produced a beautiful, flawless double mat. I am very happy.

I gave the machine 4 stars instead of 5 because I quickly learned that the measuring scale which establishes the width of the cut border was not accurate. Mine cuts a border about 3/16" narrower than the setting indicates. Once I realized this was happening, I easily adjusted to it. I will always make a quick test cut, since the outcome isn't exactly what the scale says it will be. Seems a silly flaw in an otherwise very nice machine.

This cutter is All it said it would be and a joy to use!

Information leading us to buy it was accurate and helpful.
It shipped quickly and safely.

The information and instructions were well written and easy to read (we are the tiny minority ones who DO read the manual before using the product.) :)

Thank you for a great product at a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, March 17, 2010

Being left handed has been a challenge using a mat cutter in the past. This Logan 450 is working just fine for me. I am able to pull the blade with my right hand without problems, due to the way the handles for the blades lock onto the guide. Also the video that's included is an excellent reference for using the cutter. The blades are easy to replace, and it takes up very little space when storing. I'm able to stand it behind a door for storage. I do wish that the cutter included a longer guide at the bottom to support the mat board when cutting, so it would be easier to hold everything steady when cutting. But this may just be an issue with me being left handed. Overall a great cutter!

With absolutely no previous knowledge of mat cutting I purchased the Logan 450 based on the reviews online. I unpacked it, watched the video, and within 15 minutes I made my first perfect picture mat. You can't beat that.
Nice construction quality and excellent instruction video. 5 stars from me.

I have a number of prints and photo's to mat and frame. I've used the hand cutter in the past but wanted to upgrade. Not knowing what mat cutter to buy I watched the video and decided on the Logan Model 450. It was delivered quickly, all the parts are there and I was off and running. It was the right choice for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, July 22, 2010
This review is from: Logan 450 Intermediate 40 in. cutter 450 intermediate (Kitchen)
This mat cutter is perfect. It's the same one I used to use in the photo lab at school, and works even better than I remember. I cut my first mat without practicing and it is flawless. From opening the box to framed picture was about 20 minutes. I wanted the 750, but I am really pleased I got the 450 instead. This cutter is no joke. Get one, and start saving money on mats today!
