This review is from: Logging Railroads of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains (Hardcover)
This book is a heroic output of what must have been a labour of love. This is no picture album but a carefully researched almost encyclopaedic record of these railroads and their operators. As a UK modeller with an interest in the narrow gauge railroad lines of SW Virginia, NW N Carolina and NE Tennessee its required reading. Indeed in Britain or anywhere outside the Americas its probably the best one stop source of information available There are photos and maps amd drawings too but the large quantity of text is quite fascinating in its content. Even single sentences in quite short paragraphs can shed light on the operations of little long forgotten (even in the USA)minor industrial railways.

This is not a quick read, nor always an easy read but its very satisfying. Just one line about one operation has inspired a quite different solution to operating challenges on my planned On30 layout. Its sits proudly on the bookshelf next to both volumes of Short Lines down South and my tatty much thumbed copy of "Extra South". And there is now a Volume 2 and Christmas is coming.
