Editorial Reviews

Review

Prufrock Press puts out super logic resources! I've had the pleasure of using five of their logic/critical thinking books for elementary children and would recommend them to anyone . . . My kids LOVE these. We typically take one day a week during math time as a logic day. Puzzlers like these are some of the resources I'll use and they literally beg me for logic days . . . Black and white illustrations make the pages attractive to my children, while thorough, but uncomplicated explanations and clues are attractive to me. --Cindy West, The Curriculum Choice - December 14, 2009

About the Author

Bonnie Lou Risby grew up in the Illinois woodlands atop the limestone bluffs across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. These woods were her playground where she and her siblings camped out, played detective, and enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors in every season. After attending college at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, she taught school in Columbia, IL, for 13 years. She has taught elementary school, middle school, and high school, concentrating on the subjects of French, English, and gifted education. When Bonnie helped write the grant to establish Columbia's Gifted Program in the early 1970s, there were few materials readily available that fit well with a one-period per week pullout program.

After the birth of her son, Bonnie retired from teaching and joined a family and marriage counseling practice for 12 years, continuing to write and create logic books in her spare moments. Retired from her therapy practice, Bonnie now works in a family business with her husband and son. Her office is in her home in Ballwin, MO, where Bonnie and her faithful pug dog, Francy, can be found most days. Bonnie has continued to write classroom books, chapter books, magazine articles, and books for young adults.

Besides writing, Bonnie loves taking float trips down Ozark streams, biking, long walks with Francy, gardening, family history, and travel.

I'm somewhat torn in this review because I love logic, and as both a mom and a teacher, I feel that logic is extremely important for young children to be exposed to. I ordered this for my daughter who was 8 at the time. While it a little too easy for her, it was an introduction to logic, and she enjoyed it. I would recommend copying the page so that you can reuse the book with another child or have the child complete it again at a later date, if they had difficulty.

Not too long ago we purchased the set of Perplexors, and these have a superior set up. Similar to Logic Safari, there is a brief story with all the clues. However, there are bands of categories where you cross off your answers to each question individually in Perplexors. In Logic Safari, the child has to be able to use a grid. I find it so much easier for a child to work with the set up like that of the Perplexors. I grew up using the Logic Safari model and could become confused at times.

Other than the difference in models, the book is a quality book. While it is a little short, I find anything that we enjoy is too short!

At first my 6 year old had trouble with the basic concept of solving these puzzles, but she quickly got the hang of it and now zips through them with pleasure. Her initial trouble was in realizing that a statement such as "Daralynn, the boy with the yo-yo, and the girl with the jump rope..." does NOT mean that Daralynn is the boy with the yo-yo. The book has 29 single page puzzles of increasing difficulty. The first six lessons have 3 pairs to match (it's Kevin who had the yo-yo), the rest have 4.

Logic is something that is often over-looked in education so I ordered this book for my nine-year-old. He loves it. I would recommend this book for ages 7-8. The lessons are a bit too easy for my son, but he enjoys the puzzles. I will order a level above next time.

This is a great tool to build logic and reasoning skills in young children.

The first 6 problems in this book are 3x3 grid deductive reasoning problems. The clues given help the child understand how deductive reasoning works in a small framework. The rest of the problems are 4x4 grid problems. The clues start out with 1 deductive implication ie Sally did not ride the red bus. Then they move on with more implications ie the girl with the back pack and her sister rode on the same bus as Sally.

There was a slight increase of difficulty from beginning to end. I think the purpose was to give enough practice at this level which I think is reasonable. Eventhough, my child got the hang of it early on, the more he continued to be successful the more he enjoyed it. I gave only 4 stars because 1) There are only 29 problems. 2) there was no extra challenging problems at the end

I would have liked to see 6 more problems of perhaps 5x5 grid at the end for a total of 35 problems. This would whet the childs appetite for more and give increase of challenge for those students who really understood the deductive reasoning method.

I ordered this book for my newly-turned 7yo in the fall. We are finishing it up this week and she has LOVED it. If I would have let her, I think we would have finished it the first week I gave it to her. She has always loved jigsaw puzzles and its been fun to introduce a new kind of puzzle to her. I will be ordering the next one in the series for her.

I do think the ages listed for it are just a bit high. My daughter is pretty average and had little difficulty with this book.

I use all three of these books with various ages of gifted children (3rd, 4th, and 5th grade). Initially they are frustrated, but taking them through 1 or 2 puzzles together always does the trick. Now the kids ask me for these logic puzzles. They scour through the clues to fill in the charts. You can hear the excitement in their voices and see it on their faces. This series was a score for my students!

This book contains simple logic puzzles for young children. The puzzles are all classic "grid-style" logic puzzles. These are mostly one-square style puzzles which means that only two traits are being matched. This means this book is perfect for introducing logic puzzles to a younger child. My son has fallen in love with these puzzles! Highly recommend.

My daughter has been bored in school, so I got this book to make up for the fact that there is not a whole lot of learning in 2nd grade. The puzzles are short enough to complete in a few minutes. She likes the fact that she can black out the appropriate boxes in the grid. It only has 29 puzzles, so it will not last long; but, it does the job.
