LogicWorks is the schematic drawing and interactive circuit simulation package from Capilano Computing Systems that has set the standard for demonstrating digital logic design principles and practices while producing professional-level results. As circuit designs become more complex, software tools are taking on increasing importance in the system design process. LogicWorks 4 helps teach the concepts of using these tools in a variety of design situations in electrical and computer engineering, a nd computer science. With LogicWorks 4, installing and using this interactive tool has never been easier. The friendly user interface allows students to begin designing and testing circuits in minutes without the need for complex manuals. LogicWorks 4 builds on the success of the previous version by adding new features that expand the utility of the package beyond teaching digital design concepts. The software's new export capabilities means LogicWorks 4 can be used as the central design entry point for demonstrating a number of important design technologies such as analog systems, FPGAs, and VHDL synthesis.

From the Inside Flap

Welcome to LogicWorks™ and the world of interactive circuit design. As electronic systems have become more complex, operating speeds higher and custom chip technology more widespread, software tools for engineers have become an essential part of the design process. It is no longer possible for an individual engineer or a corporation to remain competitive while using pencil and paper for design. Powerful computer aided design (CAD) programs have been commercially developed to meet the increasing demands facing industry. At Capilano Computing Systems Ltd., our flagship product, DesignWorks, is used in government, industrial, and academic labs worldwide, providing users with speed, ease of use, and affordability. Many instructors want to give their students hands-on experience with CAD tools used in industry, but the high cost and complexity of most commercial CAD programs limit their use at academic institutions. In the light of this, we developed LogicWorks, the student version of DesignWorks, to be used by students in lab settings and by instructors as an interactive teaching aid. LogicWorks was created with the following goals in mind:

To give the student an introduction to the concepts and practicalities of using CAD tools.

To provide a "virtual workbench" that allows the student to quickly test out circuit design ideas and document results.

To be intuitive and easy to use, so that time is not wasted on the details of installing and operating the software.

To provide the features and interfaces necessary to work with current design technologies.

To provide an upward path to professional design tools used in industry.

LogicWorks4 has a new and completely redesigned user interface and adds several major features not found in earlier versions. In particular automatic sheet borders and new graphics import capabilities let you create finished, professional-looking diagrams.

Acknowledgments

Many people at Capilano Computing and at Addison Wesley Longman Publishing provided invaluable help in bringing this version of LogicWorks into the world. Particular thanks go out to our editor Paul Becker and assistant editor Anna Eberhard Friedlander at AWL, and to Neil MacKenzie at Capilano, all of whom remain cheerful and fun to work with despite setbacks and schedule pressures. In addition, we would like to acknowledge our many friends and supporters in the academic and industrial worlds who continue to provide valuable feedback and support for the ongoing development of this product.

  • Includes a completely new user interface that uses the latest in customization features.
  • Uses ActiveX (for Windows users) so instructors and students can add unlimited functionality to the package and integrate Internet and other functions.
  • Allows users to create professional-looking schematic diagrams with powerful features like bussing, multi-level Undo/Redo, text annotations, title blocks, etc.
  • Allows users to demonstrate the full range of digital design techniques including three-state logic, drive levels, transmission gates, PLAs and PLDs, FPGAs, and delay, timing, and inversion issues.
  • Includes symbol libraries for many of the most commonly used devices and gives students full capacity to create their own, including simulation models.
  • New schematic drawing features allow students to create finished, professional-looking schematic diagrams.
  • Wizard tools automate and simplify the generation of schematic symbols, sub-circuit blocks, and PROM, PLA, and RAM devices with full simulation.
Expand the Design Horizons with ActiveX

In addition to these hard-wired export formats, LogicWorks4 opens a new dimension of customization capability with Microsoft's ActiveX technology. ActiveX allows users to build their own add-on components for LogicWorks using standard programming tools like Visual Basic and Visual C++. These components can add new simulation, analysis, display and export capabilities, extending LogicWorks4 with new design and teaching technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, November 27, 1999
This review is from: Logicworks 4 : Interactive Circuit Design Software for Windows and MacIntosh (Paperback)
I have been teaching digital design for several years. This software is easy for students to learn and use. It has many pre-packaged labs available. It is missing VHDL integration, however.
