The lithium-ion battery cannot be replaced, and it wears out. I think everything else about this mouse is terrific, but I use mice (I have three MX1000s) around two thousand hours a year and the MX1000's battery begins to die after about 18 months or 1500 hours of use.

The one I use most now has to be recharged every night, or it will deplete. If I forget to place it in it's cradle, the next day it will run out of ions or whatever it uses--and I will have to find something else to do while it recharges.

As an aside, after 25 years using mice, I've found that the best mice will "disappear" from my "thinking" when I'm working, and the MX1000 certainly does that.

I have the mx1000 laser at home and a crappy cheap optical at work. It's really like night and day. The laser is large enough to rest your hand on, yet you can still reach all the buttons. The buttons provide good tactile feedback when pressed, and aren't so close together that you press the wrong button by mistake. I was hoping that because of the good tactile feedback the click sounds would be greatly suppressed, but it clicks about as loud as any other mouse, which is too loud for me. The application switch button in the middle of the forward and back thumb buttons is very useful and not at all in the way. The weight of the mouse is great. The batteries give it enough ballast to make it easy to control and the teflon feet keep gliding smoothly without scratching surfaces. Battery life is just OK. It needs recharging every couple days, but to its credit it does let you know when the battery is low, and it does recharge fairly quickly.

I don't like Logitech's software. It's ugly and bloated, but it does work and it is convenient to be able to remap the buttons to a wide variety of actions. I also think the mouse wheel click has a little too much travel or requires too much pressure, but it's not a big deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the other Logitech Mice, December 31, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse (Personal Computers)
I just bought this mouse through a Gold Box deal - great price. Originally a gift for someone else, I've found that it's an improvement over the MX 610 I used in the past, and the MX600-like mouse in the MX3200 Cordless Desktop Set I currently use. Obviously, the greatest improvement is the ability to recharge the mouse, though I also realize that some people prefer to use batteries. In any case, there is a battery meter, as opposed to a mere batter indicator. Another pro is the fit of the mouse; though the mouse has a somewhat strange shape, it fits very well. However, I find that my MX610 is a little more comfortable to hold; for smaller hands, however, the MX1000 is a better fit.

At the time of writing this review, the MX Revolution is the most advanced mouse from Logitech. I have used the MX Revolution a lot, and it also feels good. However, the MX Revolution has quality problems that this mouse will not have, simply because the MX1000 has fewer moving parts. You should expect all of these Logitech laser wireless mice to break down in a year's time, but the average life of the MX Revolution seems to be around three or four months. If you are heavy mouse user and want a truly indestructible mouse, a corded optical mouse is your best bet.

Another downside of the MX1000, and all Logitech mice, is the necessity of using SetPoint to activate the extra features. I find it best to install as few drivers on my computer as possible, and I actually do not use SetPoint; the basic mouse features, complemented by the nice fit in hand, are good enough for me.

Overall, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Logi-gamer, without the Logi-gamer., January 10, 2006
I think this mouse is great; I bought it mainly because I wanted the cordless/wireless factor in my graphical design work, plus the precision of a laser mouse for my pixel-to-pixel work. Given that this is the first-generation laser mouse from Logitech, I was skeptical to how well it would perform, and I must say, I am still impressed almost a year after my initial purchase.

Though I am tempted to switch over to the new line of Logitech 2000-dpi laser gaming mice, the G5 (corded) or G7 (cordless), I find almost no real difference in performance, given the resolutions are different and albeit more sensitive with the newer mice. Even with Logitech's laser as the new bottom standard policy for mice, I am hesitant to upgrade. Though the higher-dpi mice would work well with higher resolution projects, I do not find the upgrade tempting as the MX1000 seems the most durable and comfortable than those new performer mice.

The grip of the MX1000 seems similar to the Logitech's G-series, but does not have the grainy texture. It is almost rubbery, but not and I prefer it much more. The buttons are easily accesible, but possibly a bit too crowded for some (three thumb buttons, a scroll wheel with sideways scrolling, fast scroll up and fast scroll down, and the standard left ahd right mouse buttons = total 911 programmable buttons, depending if you really want to program the main buttons). It is a bit heavy, nearing 6oz. However, I find it smooth and stable in maneuvering.

Others have criticized the mouse as a non-gaming mouse, but I beg to differ. It may not be built specifically with gaming in mind, but it is no less a contender in the field. Though it does not have the upgraded response time of the G-series or Razor mice (that overrided the USB 2.0 bottleneck of responses per second), I find it is still capable of getting every shot and fragging even the most skillful of players (and I've been a computer gamer since birth so I know what it's like to play an FPS with a just a keyboard and still compete). It's 800-dpi works fine; especially since DPI does not really matter unless you work in higher resolutions in-game and out. So if you are extra sensitive to highly reactive mice, stick with something at 800 or below--unless you want the option to customize that aspect. Unforunately, the MX1000 does not have that feature.

On the downside, the mouse does have a short battery life, but not nearly as short as the Logitech G7 (which clocks in about one battery life per 12 hours; good thing they include 2 batteries in the package). On average, I have to recharge every 4-5 days to a week, depending on how much work I do or how much gaming I do. When it is charging, good luck figuring out how to use your computer without it; I have a backup corded mouse to do my business, but it is not nearly as enjoyable. A side note: when the battery runs low, the connection between the mouse and receiver can be 'laggy' or 'unsuable', so is the inherent problem with cordless mice (the G7 has a better receiver at the cost of battery life).

One mouse to consider over the MX1000 is the G7, which has very similar features (the G7 is clearly based off the MX1000 design), but the problem is both are first-generation of their respective classes. Personally, I think the next time I upgrade from my trustworthy MX100 is when they incorporate the silky smoothness of this mouse and its battery life with the wireless receiver and hot-swappable batteries of the G7.

So all in all, this is a fantastic mouse, just waiting for the third generation of Logitech's new laser series. (4.5 stars)

2.0 out of 5 stars Battery Issues, December 20, 2006
This review is from: Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse (Personal Computers)
I like the ergonomics. It fits well in my hand and is comfortable to use. It's also attractive and stylish, if one cares about that sort of thing in a mouse. I do a lot of on-line gaming and the programmable features come in handy, though the software is just a little clunky. My issue is the battery life. I've been using it for about three months and, following an all night charge, the three green indicator lights drop down to a single red after only a few minutes (not hours - minutes), and a "low battery" warning appears on the monitor. While gaming, I find myself having to pop it back into its cradle during moments of down time, and this generally keeps it from dying on me completely at an inopportune moment.

An email query several weeks ago to Logitech via their website went unanswered. I suspect it's a dud, and my experiences may not be typical, but as Logitech did not bother to respond I suppose I'm prepared to assume the worst. I have to give it two stars because, while I'm sure all the sophisticated laser technology is wonderful, a cordless mouse that can't hold a charge after only a few months isn't much use to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Mouse to Date!, December 5, 2004
I've had one of these laser mice for about 1 month now, having upgraded from the MX700 by logitech, and it's a better mouse; faster, a bit more responsive, and fits perfectly in my hand. I use it mostly for gaming(FPS),and I have no complaints. A bit pricey, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars best. mouse. ever., December 2, 2007
This review is from: Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse (Personal Computers)
best. mouse. ever.
Not much I can add to the hundreds upon hundreds of reviews here.

pros:
-awesome ergonomics (fat and high - perfectly cupped in your palm, nice thumbrest), feels perfect, good response all around, nice to have all those buttons.

cons (and this is extreme nitpicking):
-wish battery were user replaceable (it kind of is; see below). wish it were a touch lighter. Wish they wouldnt discontinue this near-perfect model (I think they already did).

battery died? If less than 3 years old, logitech will replace it under warranty. If more than three years old, no need to throw it away. go on ebay and buy a KLIC-5001 camera battery (fairly cheap, about 10 bucks). Open up your mx1000 (5 screws on bottom, hidden behind the labels and under the teflon feet, etc). take your favorite soldering iron, just 2 wires to unsolder/resolder. the KLIC fits and works perfectly.
You can find other batteries (other than the KLIC). Try np-60 (1200mah, camera batt); klic-5001 1700MAH, lenmar dlka5 (dlk-a5) 1700MAH; targus tg-k5001 1700MAH; on ebay, STERLINGTEKS'S KLIC-5001 EQUIVALENT CLAIMS TO BE 1900mah.
The higher the "mah" rating, the more capacity it has (that is, can go longer between charges).

3.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best mice I have ever used, except..., November 5, 2007
This review is from: Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse (Personal Computers)
Really nice feeling in the hand, superb tracking, buttons very natural. So why only three stars?

Reliability: All three of my MX 1000s have developed (after a year or so of moderate use) the habit of intermittently, but frequently, turning single clicks into double clicks, which can wreak havoc with whatever I am doing. Logitech has provided no tech support for this problem. I am seeking a suitable replacement.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great mouse for the price, December 22, 2006

I picked this up a year ago, and have never had any problems with it. Fits my hand great, and is very responsive to movement (a little too good at first, had to turn down the sensitivity when I first got it!). Battery life has been great for me, but about the only time I use my home computer much is on weekends, so I can't say how well it works with daily use. Setup was a breeze, though, and the buttons are laid out where they can all be reached relatively easily. All in all, a great purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best mouse ever, December 3, 2010
This review is from: Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless Mouse (Personal Computers)
I bought this mouse in October 2005 as an all around mouse and gaming mouse. Today I use it at work and use a g500 at home for gaming. The mx1000 has outlived many other mice. I shelved it and used it only as a backup for several years but I broke it back out about 4 months ago and it has been doing fine. The battery still lasts well through the week. I have a desk job so I am using the mouse quite frequently during the day. The charger still works but only when you get the mouse into a sweet spot. The mouse button 1 is a little fidgety at times, but I have found an online tutorial on how to fix it (apparently it is just due to a small piece of metal that gets bent out of shape. The cursor tracking started to get a little erratic a few years ago which is why I shelved it. It wasn't extreme, just not acceptable for a gaming mouse anymore. It is more than acceptable for everyday tasks, however. When it started this it was still under warranty and Logitech sent me an MX Revolution as a replacement. The Rev. had horrible pointer tracking (by comparison the 1000's tracking could be considered "normal") and I just gave it away to a friend and bought a g5 for gaming. This mouse has the best and most comfortable design and with the perfect weight and nice texture and a very strong and high quality construction. I wish they would re-release this model with updates. I think it would sell very well if they did.
