These speakers are good for the price, and the average person would probably enjoy them. i use these in my dorm room in college, and they're great for playing music, though the subwoofer is very boomy even when i set the sub volume at 0.

This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
These little speakers rock! The sound is very clean and full, with a signal to noise ration >96dB.

The bass is very solid and deep for such a small driver, with a slightly noticeable peak in frequency response around 80Hz or so, depending on what you are listening to. I personally have to turn the volume of the sub to it's lowest level, or the bass overwhelms everything else. I think the greatest thing about these speakers is that even at a low overall volume level the sound is very full with plenty of deep bass (very similar to sound you get from a pair of large element headphones). A lot of speakers sound very thin at low volume levels as the bass rolls off, but not these, the little sub box just keeps thumping. One word of warning: The sub unit is NOT video shielded! Do not place it anywhere near your monitor, or you will ruin it, place it in the floor under your desk as recomended.

These speakers will bring the life back to your MP3 collection, and I won't even mention video games. Buy and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars exactly what i was looking for, April 11, 2005
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
I wanted a little extra bass for the songs I had stored on my computer and it exceeded my expectations! They look great and they sound even better. The subwoofer has a bass adjuster (mine does---some people just may not know where it is, i had to show a friend where hers was the other day) and you can turn it down to no bass or turn it all the way up. I was so excited the first time I listened to it. So if you want to give a boost to your computer's sound system (or a cd player's) then these are good bet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable value, June 4, 2005
By
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
Computer speakers have made leaps and bounds in the past ten years. The cost / benefit ratio, just like with other forms of technology, has really plummeted to levels so inexpensive that you no longer have to be cynical if something costs next to nothing.

I picked up the Logitech's mainly to listen to my mp3's before burning them and listening on my 'real' stereo. Frankly, burning cd's is a pain in the rear, and I have been using my laptop and mp3 device almost exclusively as a home unit now that I have the X-230.

I said on one other site that complaining about budget speakers is a little like whining that you're dollar cheeseburger isn't as fresh and succulent as it appears on the menu. And while there are many praises to sing about these speakers, at the end of the day they aren't a Bose system. Period.

But MAN do they deliver a lot of bang for the buck. The highs are incredibly crisp and the bass is more than adequate, particularly if you are an apartment dweller like myself. These units were not designed to scorch your next block party, but they will fill an average apartment with acceptable sound even at a much higher price point.

Regarding the unit being "too bassy," the solution is simple (and touched on by another reviewer here). What I do is turn the bass knob all of the way up - yes, up, and then tweak the EQ in my media player to the lowest bass setting. This affords only the deepest bass signals to come from the sub, and eliminates most of the tubby sounds associated with cheaper systems. I firmly believe that many of the individual frequency complaints can easily be addressed by some creative EQ-ing. After getting my settings right, I can still notice a difference between these speakers and my Bose shelf unit, but not so much that I would run out and buy the Boses had I not already owned them. Only severe audiophiles will be unhappy here.

If I do have a complaint, it's that the cords are not long enough, and that there is no option of extending them. Speaker placement is almost as important to your sound as the speakers themselves. Well-placed, even a crappy system can yeild some great sound. Poorly placed, and even a $900 JBL floor system will sound anemic.

They look GREAT! And the rectangular shape of the sub allows it to be placed in areas where a traditional 'box' sub won't go (such as under the couch, where I use my laptop most often). The overall feel of the unit is very solid, with none of the 'cheapness' one might expect from budget sets. The knobs are very solid and the overall design is very elegant.

Basically, you can't go wrong with these. $30!!! I spent 30 bucks just drinking beer yesterday. They won't fill your home with world class audio, but for the everyday user these are far, far above average, regardless of price point. I was very, very pleased when I first hooked them up and schooled them with some Groove Armada. Just remember to USE YOUR EQ!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well balanced sound, good bass, smooth vocals, December 29, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
For folks who really enjoy listening to well recorded music with vocals and deep, full bodied bass, these speakers are just terrific! As an audio enthusiast and industry engineer for many years, my biggest complaint about most computer speakers has been their relatively thin, metallic or boomy sound, that made most music sound like bad boombox tunes. Not with these puppies! They have better tonal balance than far more expensive speakers from companies like Altec, Polk Audio and Bose, and for a lower cost! Most have arrived in perfect condition, but one set arrived with the port tube rattling around loose inside! Out of four sets, that's not a good percentage, so you might want to check them carefully before setting them up.

Yes, I repaired the loose tube, but it's not easy getting in and out, and I do not recommend this tactic for the average user. Just return the item if defective upon arrival. That is the only negative that I have to share, otherwise, they have been a joy and delight for the entire family!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic speaker set at a great price!, September 13, 2006
By
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
I've been shopping for computer speakers for a while and the selection in the stores was underwhelming and the prices were ridiculous. I've had great luck with my Logitech mikes and headphones for my desktop and laptop, so I thought I'd check out Logitech speakers. I read the reviews on here before I bought and figured almost 130 people couldn't be wrong, and the price was certainly right.

So they were delivered yesterday, it took me about 5 minutes to set them up (and I'm no electronics whiz) and I had the music thumping in no time. I love the size and shape of the 2 desktop speakers--they're compact and perfect for my small workspace. I also like the angled desk stands, which can also be mounted to the wall. I also like the easy access controls--power button, volume control and headphone jack right on the front of one of the small speakers and the adjustment knob on the subwoofer is a great feature. I do agree that the cables are cumbersome, but that's a minor detail that most systems share.

The sound quality is great--no vibrato, no reverb, no rattling at higher volumes. These speakers are great quality and put out a lot of sound--I only have the speakers turned up almost halfway and that's plenty for my small office. I agree with the others--the bass is VERY effective at low levels. I have the subwoofer set on 1/3 power and it's perfect.

One important note and I think others have mentioned this--I didn't see anywhere in the instructions where it said to keep the subwoofer away from the monitor. So I will re-iterate that here: put the subwoofer on the floor or a few feet away from the monitor. The subwoofer is not shielded and will fry your monitor if you don't. Maybe I missed it in the instructions but I was glad someone else had mentioned it.

To sum up, these speakers ROCK and you won't find a better deal for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best speakers for under $70, January 17, 2005
By
PJ (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
It's still early in January 2005 and it's the right time for manufacturers to introduce their new line of inexpensive 2.1 speakers. Presently, for less than $70 and without any new models from competitors, the Logitech X-230 speakers are my choice.

With the subwoofer's rear knob turned to the maximum, distortion from the subwoofer is not noticeable. I've set the knob between 3 and 4 out of 10 to get the amount of bass which nearly suits my taste in bass. In comparison, my taste in bass is being able to hear a thumpy to boomy bass drum attack on Buddy Rich's Time Being 5 minute drum solo.

Depending on the type of audio played, when the volume is cranked higher than "normal" listening levels, the satelites will distort. The speaker's midrange can be improved with your computer's graphic equalizer.

The gaming control device, which was included with the Logitech X-220's, is not included with the X-230's.

These speaker's warranted a 5 star rating because of it's quality sound for the price. Set at comfortable levels on the speakers and your computer, the X-230's will easily fill a 200 square foot room with clean and distortion free sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, but very boomy, September 7, 2008

These speakers are good for the price, and the average person would probably enjoy them. i use these in my dorm room in college, and they're great for playing music, though the subwoofer is very boomy even when i set the sub volume at 0.

i semi-fixed the boomy sub problem by clogging the port with a sock, and putting the sub up on the rack under my desk insulated from the desk with a bit of foam. less solid contact with the floor removed some of the boominess. kind of nice now.

i mainly use these for listening to music, but occasionally for recording and mixing audio as i like to record and i'm too poor for some decent studio monitors (not really anywhere near flat response, but i have a good idea how they react. i also use a set of sony mdr-v6's for mixing)

i also play guitar through these speakers using a line6 toneport (guitar amp modeler) with decent results after i did the aforementioned mods to the subwoofer, as it was faaaar too boomy before to use for playing guitar though.

the speakers are also a bit thin sounding (not the best midrange responce) but alot of that can be compensated for with the eq built into most music players. compared to my friends logitech x540, i like the x230 more. (the matrix button on the x540 is just awful, instantly kills all definition in the sound)

5.0 out of 5 stars Minor tweak turns the speaker from 4 stars to 5 stars, May 4, 2006
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
I was one of those people who think x-230 has too much bass. The excessive bass was annoying, but not anymore. I used a sponge-like packaging material to stuff the resonant tube on the woofer up. Doing so effectively seals the open end of the tube and weakens the effect of the Helmholtz frequency, thus reduces the amount of the bass.

With this tweak the speaker is really unbeatable for the price you pay and I would rate it 5 stars as a result.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great job Logitech!, June 10, 2005

This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
I figured if I was going to take a chance on a set of computer speakers that I had never listened to, then I might as well not spend alot of money.

I was surprised and delighted to find that the X-230 not only met my minimal expectations, it far exceeded them!

At first, I was concerned about all the people that said that this system is too bassy. I will concur that the bass can be a bit over the top and should definitely be tuned down. But, wouldn't you rather have too much bass then none at all?

After having played several movies on my computer's DVD drive with the X-230, I can easily say this system delivers a generous helping of sound and the quality of the sound is more than I would have expected from a 2.1 system.

All I can say is... way to go Logitech!

3.0 out of 5 stars Frustratingly good and bad, November 11, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech x-230 2.1 2-Piece Dual Drive Speakers with Ported Subwoofer (Personal Computers)
First, the good:
- This system looks reasonably slick.
- The main speakers sound wonderful! No more hiss like with my old speakers... wonderfully crisp sound!
- Everything was straightforward and easy to setup.

But the bad...:
- Cords are a bit short. I had to put the right speaker closer to to my computer than I wanted to.
- Surprisingly, this doesn't seem to have the same peak volume that my five-year-old Logitech speakers have. I have turn everything up (my Windows sound settings and my speakers) pretty high if I want to blast a movie soundtrack to fill up the room.
- The bass overwhelms EVERYTHING else even with the subwoofer turned all the way down! Logitech, this is fun and fine with computer games and maybe some types of hip hop or electronica, but it's positively ruining my enjoyment of my jazz and classical and most other genres of music. Literally giving me a headache.

I'm seriously tempted to send these speakers back for a refund, except I know that the shipping costs and hassles are likely to outweigh the relatively small amount I paid for this item. Maybe I'll it to a gamer friend or someone who REALLY loves *thumping* (and seemingly disconnected) bass.
