Ideal if you're right handed,

Assuming you're right-handed, MX400 is a very comfortable mouse - but you have to give it one to two days to really fit in with your hand and to find your optimum holding pattern. The overall build quality, scrolling, glide, placement of back/forward buttons, cable, clicking, amazing tracking...everything's absolutely great about this mouse, including the 5-year warranty. Over several months of constant use, the scroll wheel misbehaved only once, and just a puff of compressed air corrected the problem.
As the laser optics used in this mouse is invisible to human eye, it makes a nice touch to your desktop or laptop setup, like a natural extension of the setup. The optical engine is 1100 dpi, it is laser (a lot less picky about the tracking surface), has tilt wheel, and the buttons require just the right amount of clicking to activate and they have nice tactile feedback. Like all Logitech mice, it suffers from the SetPoint drivers' bloat, but if you're willing to let go of the tilt wheel, you don't need to install anything at all, just plug in the mouse and in Windows XP, all those back/forward buttons are automatically recognized. If you're short on USB ports, there's a PS/2 adapter so you can use your computer's mouse port (that green port that has been sitting empty until now). One interesting information about this mouse: its wireless big brother, MX610, has a symmetrical version for southpaws. Beware though, MX610 series suffers from hit-or-miss tracking problems. For that reason, you might be able to find ridiculous deals at your local Staples/BestBuy/Fry's for a MX610, but the southpaw version is very hard to find in a brick&mortar store. My friends call me a mouse freak...and I've tried nearly 75% of the MS and Logitech offerings. I can tell you that this MX400 is my day-to-day mouse, and it seems it will stay that way for a long time. Hope you'll like it as much as I do.

This is probably one of the only mice that have actually got the thumb button placing right. taken it may be a bit back for big hands like mine. But curving your thumb to click ... that's a no-effort compared to stretching your thumb forward like other mice expect you to. No problems with hibernating and suspending with my machine. All functions stable as a rock and absolutely love the software. It is so easy to reconfigure this mouse according to the task at hand. A true time-saver. My son also uses it for excellent gaming. Also, get the updated software from the logitech site. I have had no problems with this device at all except my hands are a little big and this one is about the same size as the normal Microsoft mouse and not as big as the pictures may make you think. Also, the middle button is a little too hard for my taste ... hey, no problem ... I just use the feather-lite right-tilt as the middle-click ! Awesome !

Excellent mouse but software is buggy,

I have a MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo, running OS 10.4.10. I downloaded the latest MX 400 driver software from the Logitech site and installed it. It looks simple to set up, but once you do you will find that weird errors start to pop up randomly (error -9870 for example) and some functions just don't work at all. Using the forward side button to page forward on a web site, for example--the most common use of that button--simply didn't work. The back button worked, but not the forward. Huh??
Software complaints aside, the mouse itself is excellent--good feel, good size, etc. But Mac users: keep looking.

I've been using this one for half a year now, and it's a very nice and comfortable mouse. I bought it specifically to be able to scroll horizontally. Well, what has to pointed out is that it doesn't work as well as expected. Even though one can tweak the settings, one ends up with a comfortable scrolling speed in some applications, but in some others it's just too fast/too slow.
I also dislike the fact that there is no way to get rid of zooming of images when you scroll in an image viewer (unless you get rid of scrolling function altogether). Another disadvantage is that if you click a Back/Forward button, not necessarily will they work. It actually takes time to register in a browser, which is annoying. Again, most other times it works fine. I blame software. Note that you must install it to be able to tweak most settings of the mouse, including the horizontal scrolling function.

Works great on a Mac too!,

I always liked the MouseMan design when I used to use Windows PCs. The mouse that comes with the Apple iMac may be a work of art but isn't nearly as functional or comfortable to use. I tried the wireless keyboard and mouse that Logitech makes especially for the Mac and was very disappointed in the software. I'd rather have a wired mouse and keyboard for a desktop computer anyway. No need to buy batteries. Rather than go back to an Apple mouse, I decided to give this one a try. I'm glad I did.
This mouse works very well with my iMac G5. The CD-ROM that comes with it made no mention of having an OS X version of the software on it (even though it says OS X is supporte on the box), so I downloaded that from Logitech's web site. I'm very happy with the way this mouse works. It's very precise and responsive. Too bad the color doesn't match, but I can live with that.

I have a 3-year-old Mac desktop and I do not require a lot of features from a mouse. This mouse is very comfortable (if you're using it right-handed) and tracks very well without a mouse pad. The two main buttons work out of the box (no software install) as does the scroll wheel for scrolling up, down, right, left, and as a third mouse button. It is nice that this type of mouse does not blind you if you look at the bottom of it.
I'm really happy with this mouse. If you are looking for a solid, reliable mouse, this is a good choice. If you don't need fancy features like zoom, the quality of the software doesn't matter because you don't have to install it. I haven't installed the software so I can't review that.

Good mouse, sucky software,

My mouse died and after reading reviews, I decided to try Logitech and the MX 400. I've never used a logitech product before, but all the reviews seemed favorable. To be upfront, I own a macbook pro running 10.4.8. I connected the mouse and it seemed a little sluggish to me. I loaded the software and it refused to recognize my mouse. i went to the logitech support site, followed the instructions and I still could not get the Logitech Control Center software to work. I couldn't even UNINSTALL the software and when i checked in my library, some of the software items were missing. I contacted customer support and they recommended installing old driver software (2.1.2 and 2.1.1) which I could not do because I could not uninstall 2.1.3. Everything I did and asked resulted in the same response, try reinstalling 2.1.1 and finally, calling tech support which is open at times that are not very convenient for me. So after about 6 hours of trying to get the mouse to work properly, I returned it, purchased a less feature rich mouse from Kensington, which works great with my Mac, and now am quite happy.
So... if you're a Mac user and you want to be able to do chording or other use of a multi-buttoned mouse, do not buy the logitech mice until they fix these bugs. According to logitech I wasn't the only one having this problem.

Better than expected.,
This review is from: Logitech MX 400 Performance Laser Mouse (Personal Computers)
I bought this mouse to replace the mighty mouse that comes with apple computers which has to be the least ergonomic mouse ever created. It worked immediately when it was plugged in. After loading the software, it worked even better with all of the buttons which can be programmed to do any number of apple shortcuts. I found this to be a trouble free process, with none of the problems people talk about with the software. I just download the new version from the internet instead of using the CD, just to make sure it is the most recent.
Pros: -Extremely comfortable, the materials, the buttons, the shape, everything feels great. -Very good response and none of the ghost movements I've seen with optical mice, you know when the cursor just starts moving for no reason. -Seamlessly works with mac and windows machines, I have moved it to and from work and with all kinds of computer and it never misses a beat. -great value, all Logitech products I have bought are still working after years of use, mice, keyboards, headphones, and this one seems no different. Cons (because I feel like I have to): -Wired, which I actually like, stops the hassle with batteries. -The center mouse button is hard to click without knocking it from side to side, I have only found this to be a problem with drafting on AutoCAD, otherwise I have never come across an instance where this is a problem. -Keeping the laser hole clean. I have found this small hole on the bottom picks up tiny hairs and sometimes makes the mouse lose its ability to track. it's easy to clean with tweezers, and this almost makes me take this down to a 4, but it needs to be cleaned about 3 times a year, which I should probably clean it far more than that as regular maintenance, so I will just leave it here. I'm thinking about getting the wireless version of this mouse or just another one of these, but I'm going to stick with Logitech and this shape for as long as they make it.

Great wired mouse,

I am very happy with my wired MX 400. I had a wireless Logitech mouse and I got very tired of putting batteries in it. Wow what a relief! The MX 400 is very precise and easy to use and feels great in the hand. It would be nice if it were a little heavier.
The Setpoint software shipped with it has some issues with stopping screen saver from working.

Logitech MX 400 - program buttons,

Even though I have a touchpad (G4 aluminum)I prefer a mouse at home. I liked the Microsoft mouse design and feel, but it
seems poorly constructed as the wheel became useless. I next tried a Kensington mouse, and after a few days of experimentation, their tech rep told me it was not compatible with Firefox or Safari. ("then please don't print Mac OS X compatible!!). My final choice was a Logitech MX 400. The 5 year warranty caught my eye, yet the back and forward side buttons worked, then didn't. I tried to program them, but to no avail, as Logitech's web site for Mac's is "lost in space." While searching the web, I found a site which listed programming this mouse for Mac web browsing. From the logictech mouse preferences in my Mac System Preferences, I chose "keystroke" for the back button. From the keystroke window, I clicked in the empty box pressed Apple Command button, then pressed the LEFT arrow for back. I repeated the procedure, again used command button, and clicked, RIGHT arrow for forward. Now, when using Firefox, it works like a charm. ndmc |
