First off, I am a Logitech/Harmony remote proponent, since I'm on my second Harmony remote (Harmony One)...the first one developed a bad key after 4 years of heavy use. I like the software-based system to update the universal remotes and the flexibility it provides.
I received this unit as part of the Vines program, so it was free and I don't have a bone to pick with Logitech. I was unsure that this was a product I would find useful, especially with my spouse bemoaning the fact that we have 'another' remote to contend with. I sort of wanted to prove her wrong. As you'll see I wasn't entirely successful.
The pros:
Packaging was excellent...this could have been an Apple-branded product from the way it was packaged. Even the inside of the box had some foam padding glued to the top (for some reason), but I was impressed. The unit can be seen in the photos...very streamlined and unobtrusive.
Setup can be easy, if you have an existing Harmony remote for your system. I just opened the software on my computer and copied the device information into myHarmony.com online setup. The only problem I had was finding the setup site, since you first have to hook up the unit, via USB to your computer, then create a new account. Once you do this, the site recognizes the device, and leads you through the setup. Very easy.
Downloading the app to the iPad and iPod Touch was also very easy. When you synch the app to the device, after it is placed in your viewing room, it asks for your password, and the synch proceeds with no problems here. The iPad app is different than the iPod app. I would only use the iPod app in an emergency and find very little benefit from using it.
The IR blaster works!! We positioned the small receiver under the stand of our TV, then put the pod unit in the cabinet and closed the doors. The blaster transmitted the signal (via a thin wire) to the pod unit and controlled the TV with no problems. I wish our Harmony One could do that!
Actual use observations:
First off, this is not a replacement for your universal remote. It can duplicate the functionality for simple things, like watching TV, watching a DVD, listening to the radio, listening to CDs. But if you have special functions on your TV, you will run into trouble. The problem arises in this type of case: You need to use the TV remote buttons for special functionality, but want to control the volume of your system with your receiver. Harmony remotes let you program for this type of instance, but Harmony Link does not. You can use the iPad app to view the buttons on your different device remotes, but you need to slide the panel on the app to the far right to view them. Then you need to scroll thru all the choices and pick the button you want. My TV (Samsung) has a special function called Smarthub that provides an internet portal to Netflix, Vimeo, game, web, etc. To use it, I need to use the functions on my Samsung TV remote, yet control the volume with my receiver. This is very difficult to do with the Harmony Link.
I also found a bug in the remote that turns off my AppleTV when I hit the Select/OK button on the iPad remote app. This is not good and should be fixed.
Now the interesting part of the app, and probably the only reason we would use Harmony Link. When you set up the app with your cable provider (which worked well for us....we use Uverse), it streams all the programming available at the current time and 24 hours in advance. You can quickly scroll through the program icons (many of which have descriptive logos/designs on them), and find which program or movie you want to see. Touching the icon gives an info screen about the program, how much time is left, etc. You can hit the Watch Now button, and it will select that channel. Many times we want to find where the US Open is being broadcast, and by scrolling through the icons you can find it without channel surfing. Also, you can select pre-defined filters to find News, Sports, Movies, Kids, etc. The downside, is that all the channels for your package are shown, even the ones you don't subscribe to. You can also select a program and add it to 'Favorites', sort of a personalized filter.
Another downside is that scrolling is limited by a buffer and stops while it is being filled, so it is not as smooth as I'd like. It is not fun scrolling through 575 channels and having to wait as the buffer fills up.
What would improve Harmony Link:
1) More flexibility with Activity setup; giving the user functionality comparable to Logitech Harmony remotes.
2) Allow the user to drag remote buttons onto a template to create a customized remote with needed actions and user-designed placement. This would be really awesome.
3) Allow users to create filters on the app, so that programs are defined according to a user's tastes rather than pre-sets from Logitech, e.g. CNBC doesn't appear in the News filter preset, and I would want it there.
The nice thing about this product, is that it depends on the software for most of the functionality. I would hope Logitech will listen to customers and upgrade the software app to provide a more pleasurable experience.
