Amazon.com Review

The Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical is the entry-level device in Logitech's optical mouse line. It has a pleasant blue and gray color scheme and a translucent bottom that allows its red light to radiate outward so it illuminates your hand. The body feels sturdy and is shaped for use with the left or the right hand. The only concern we had with construction of the device was the metallic "clink" sound the mouse buttons made when pressed, instead of the typical "click" noise of most mouse buttons--but we had no problem performing click or double-click actions.

Installation on both a PS/2 port and a USB port was quick. Using Windows Me, we just plugged it in and started using it without having to install any software or drivers. Windows 98 users plugging the mouse into a USB port will need to install the USB drivers before they can use the device, so have the installation disc handy.

Installing the software that comes with the mouse gives you the added functionality of being able to program the mouse buttons--and even the wheel--to perform a variety of different commands. You can also customize such things as pointer appearance, cursor speed and acceleration, and mouse orientation. Installation is in two steps: installation of the software and then setup of the mouse to perform as you wish. Both the installation wizard and the setup wizard were straightforward. The user's manual was easy to read and contains instructions in English and Spanish.

We tested the mouse on a variety of different surfaces to see how it performed. Wood, plastic, cardboard, paper, a notebook, and a pant leg all worked well. Our only problem came when we tried it out on clear glass. The cursor didn't move at all. Opaque glass worked fine, though. All in all, this mouse delivers good performance at a terrific price. --Patricia Atherly

Pros:

  • No moving parts to break down
  • Quick installation
  • Works on a variety of different surfaces
  • No ball to clean
Cons:
  • "Clink" noise that buttons make sounds cheap
  • Not shaped ergonomically

Amazon.com Product Description

The first thing you'll notice when you start using the Logitech WheelMan Mouse is the red glow coming from the bottom. That's because this mouse reads movement optically instead of with a ball, which means you get improved accuracy and fewer moving parts to break down. And you don't need a mouse pad--most smooth surfaces will do. You can also go for months without having to stop to clean it, unlike conventional mice, which collect gunk in the ball and need to be cleaned all the time. Its buttons can be programmed to perform common commands, and you can use the wheel to scroll down windows without scroll bars. The WheelMan fits comfortably in either the left or right hand. It is for use with PCs or Macs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Those willing to make a change will be pleased., January 24, 2001
This review is from: Logitech 930495-0403 Corded Optical Wheelmouse (Personal Computers)
First of all, please do not purchase this mouse if you EXPECT the same feel and workings of your old "round ball" mouse. Optical mice are much more precise and sensitive.

I see a lot of reviews here stating that a slight mouse move shoots the cursor from one end of the screen to the other and that it is difficult to operate. I do not know why Amazon does not monitor customer responses more closely, as this is something that takes two seconds to alter. Just go into your control panel and change your sensitivity levels on the mouse, (you can also change double clikc speed as well).

The key reason I have upgraded my computers with this optical mouse is three fold.

1) Any hand size will feel comfortable using this mouse. Microsoft is a little big for smaller hands.

2) Personaly I like tho have the mouse to have some weight to it, not that this mouse is heavy or anything, but I did not really see the point of the "light as a feather" approcah Microsoft took with its optical mice.

3) I despise having to replace my older non-optical mice every year, it was simply not worth it in the long run. I have not only had no issues with this mouse, but I no longer have to use the q-tip and air spray cleaning method every month to keep performance.

Would HIGHLY recommend this mouse, definatly worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Logitech!, October 9, 2001
This review is from: Logitech 930495-0403 Corded Optical Wheelmouse (Personal Computers)
I have owned so many mice in my life that I have bought an extra cat to deal with them. Seriously, I guage all mice I buy by how long they last when compared to the first mouse I ever owned- a vintage circa 1990 two-button Dexxa, which lasted me 4 years and three PCs. I have owned 3 Logitech mice-all with wheels, one cordless and finally, this blue and silver little gem...set up time was as long as it took me to get it out of the box and slapped into the back of my system, which was about 13 seconds. Computer users of the world, get rid of your ball-mice and buy an optical mouse right now! Gone are the days of poor response from your mouse pointer because the ball and/or internal wheels are gummed up with dust, Fritos or salsa dip. It's great for applications like PhotoShop, fantastic for games like Unreal Tournament, Elite Force, and Homeworld- where there are a lot of sweeping movements. Movement is precise and accurate, the feel in your hand is comfortable, unless you have really big hands, then it might be a problem- plus it glows bright red when in operation, so that might be a selling feature to people who like lots of blinky-winky lights on their equipment. Is there a downside? Sometimes, you may accidentally bring up the Logitech control menu in the middle of something else you are doing- no big deal. Buy this mouse now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mac and PC users... Get this mouse!, January 23, 2001

While I still love the MS Intellimouse Explorer I use at home on my PC (I have large hands), this is a great mouse! I have used this mouse on PC and Mac and I am pleased with its performance on both platfroms.

The tracking is excellent. As with all optical mice, there can be tracking problems on certain surfaces (glass, shiny, white, etc.) but this not a problem for almost anyone. I use it on a plain grey desktop with no disernable pattern and it works perfectly. It even works on your pants leg! In fact, it is the most precise mouse I have ever used in Photoshop and that says it all for me.

Mac users will appreciate the addition of the right and wheel buttons. For some reason, 2 button mice have never caught on in the Mac world, but this (3 button!) mouse has the potential to change that.

While I like the 2 additional thumb buttons on the Intellimouse Explorer (5 buttons total) which are commonly used for browser navigation, the Mouseware software that comes with the Logitech provides the same functions (and more) using the wheel and its associated button. And, it costs much less than the Explorer.

I can also testify to the fact that this mouse works great using USB or the PS2 adapter (provided).

I know this is really silly, but optical mice just look cool, too. If you don't like people bothering you when you work, DON'T GET THIS MOUSE. The last time my input device got so much attention was when I used a light pen on a CAD system (15 years ago!)

Highly recommended!
