We have been using skype with our parents overseas for the past 4+ years using computer and after just using this for a few days, we are extremely satisfied. While the cost of this device is a bit on the high side, the value that it brings in its simplicity and quality are well worth it.

* Simplicity of setup and use - ideal for older parents
* Quality of video - outstanding! Using the same slower internet connection in India, this device produces significantly better video, its not even comparable how much better this is.
* Wide Angle - the whole family is in view
* Use your TV - worth stating again. Makes it that much easier for elderly parents to use it on the larger TV screen
* Works over wifi and ethernet. Quality over WiFi is very good.

* You need HDMI on the TV - not a con per say, but you need to be aware of it

It comes with a simple remote, but next time I visit my family, I will be pairing this with a logitech harmony remote to make it an even simpler setup for my parents. And I will be buying another one for my wife's parents and one for us at home.

I posted this review on some other sites when this device was available at those sites. Now that it's available here, I'm posting here since I like to reference Amazon for product reviews:

In full disclosure, I got the Logitech TV cam HD free as a review unit so some may see my review as biased but I'll try to be as impartial as possible in my review.

I really liked this unit as an easy one-stop device for Skype video and audio calling. It's really user friendly with easy set up so that a nontechy can put it together and get started. The camera image is pretty good and the built in microphone is acceptable. I compared the image quality to my HD Pro webcam C910 and found it comparable. The C910 though is used with software driver on a computer so it has a larger set of options than the TV Cam. Because of it's ease of use and utility, I gave a rating of 8 on a scale of 10.

Ease of set up and ease of use. The ability to use it without a computer is awesome. Just hook it up to an HDMI device that has a speaker, a router or switch, and a power source and you're set to go. The set up of the Skype application was very easy and got online within 10 minutes of opening the box.

This unit works on both wired and wireless networks which is really nice. It automatically detects he network and selects it. An interesting feature/bug is that you can't have a wireless connection when you've got the camera plugged in to an active wired network. The user interface won't attempt to detect the wireless network if attached to a wired connection.

Since it works wirelessly, this camera is very easily used as a security/baby monitor.

Verified Purchase
I bought this product a couple days ago, and it works great. Excellent quality picture, and it makes it much more easy and relaxing to skype, because you can do it from your couch in front of the tv. The microphones pick up clear sound even from a couch ten feet away. This improves the skype experience enough so that we will now use skype a lot.

I own 15 Logitech products including 6 HD security cameras which are awesome. I am a huge Logitech fan.

That said, this TV cam product is not worthy of the Logitech logo. The advertising on Logitech's website states two things that are false:

1) "Clear, full-room view... The wide-angle HD gets the whole family in the video call.... freedom to move around naturally."

The picture on the website shows a 130-150 degree viewing angle. The actual viewing angle is 60 degrees, which is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the room. There is very little freedom to move around and still stay in the shot. This is a huge departure from Logitech's security cameras that provide a 130 degree viewing angle, which really does get the whole room into view.

2) "Digital pan and tilt with the remote digital pad arrow buttons -- move the lens left, right, up, or down." This is not possible. There is a function to zoom in and zoom out, but the up, down, left and right arrows did not work at all.

I called Logitech support about this and spoke to a supervisor who was rude, stated he was very busy, and hung up on me.

Before hanging up the phone rep stated that the product 1) had no ability to pan left, right, up, or down using the remote, 2) had no more than a 60 degree viewing angle, and 3) Logitech clearly advertised these limitations. I explained to the phone rep that Logitech's website was advertising the exact opposite of what he was stating. I gave him the specific website page I was reading off of, but he refused to acknowledge what the website said. (This was on May 4, 2013 in case the website subsequently changes).

He also refused to send out a replacement product.

Before purchasing this Logitech camera, here are some of the options that I considered...

I briefly looked at TelyHD. This seems very promising as well, but I couldn't get a chance to try it at a local store. Didn't want to spend $250 without trying it first. So, I haven't yet been able to pursue this (though, I would love to check it out). TelyHD and Logitech cameras seem pretty similar. The TelyHD seems to have a few additional features that the Logitech device lacks (eg: photo sharing, video-calls with multiple parties, etc), but is a little more expensive esp if you want to get all these features. Relatively speaking, Logitech's UI seemed very simple & intuitive.

I briefly considered XBox+Kinect -- currently, there's no Skype app for XBox (plus, this setup would be a little complex for older/non-techie folks in the family).

Using a tablet/laptop is an option -- but the cameras in these devices don't cover a wide angle, plus it's a little tedious to project them onto the big screen.

Here's a summary of my experience with the Logitech TV Cam HD ...

*The camera has skype built-in. No computer is needed. The camera needs only three things to function
(1)Power (supports both 110v and 220v)
(2)A broadband internet connection (supports both wired & wireless connections)
(3)A TV with one unused HDMI port

*The camera is fairly compact & light-weight.
*Mounting the camera on the TV was very easy.
*Setting up the camera & logging onto Skype was very easy & quick (took about 3 minutes)
*The remote has about 6 buttons & is very intutive. Likewise, the UI is very simple & easy to use.
*Video quality is below that of a SD transmission, even with a 15/7Mbps broadband connection on my side.
