Almost perfect,
By
This review is from: Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop (Personal Computers)
I have had this cordless set for several days now. Here are my thoughts:
First the bad news. There could be better quality control on this. The first unit I purchased had a right-arrow key that would not work properly (all other keys worked fine). Another reviewer of this model here said that the space bar did not work properly on their unit. I liked everything else so much, I returned mine and got another unit, which is now working properly. The only other negatives I can mention are: (a) the temperature on the numeric keypad ALWAYS reads 77 degrees; (b) the Media key on the numeric keypad always seems to launch the default media player, no matter what I set it to (the media key on the full keyboard works fine). Now the good news. I love the sleek look and modular design of this set, and it happens to match my HP Pavillion Notebook perfectly. I love the small USB receiver. I love the profile and tactile feel of the flat keyboard. I love the features that let you use this both on a desktop (in my case a docking station) or on the road with your laptop. The mouse is the least sexy of the three main parts, but nevertheless works well and the off switch is a nice feature; its main appeal is that it can be used on the desktop and as a portable laptop mouse. The wireless USB reciever, while small (a good thing), still has a very sufficient range. All in all, this set has solved a number of problems for me and I strongly recommend it. Just be sure to check ALL the keys, etc. immediately when you get it and exchange it for another unit if any of the keys do not respond.

Great Keyboard a Few Annoyances,
By
This review is from: Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop (Personal Computers)
This is the best keyboard I've ever bought as far as typing goes. Its so sleek and thin and looks great on any desktop. Setup is so easy just plug in the mini usb adapter and hit connect on all the devices and your good to go.
I really like how the numpad is detached from the keyboard. The mouse is probably the best mouse I've ever used and the switch to turn on and off is really great for saving battery power. All the media keys are really well done and not overdone like other keyboards that have so many buttons that your not gonna use. The little LCD screen on the numpad is really neat too. While its not essential it just adds a nice touch to the whole futuristic modern look. Logitech really has designed a nice keyboard. There is one thing that annoys me though which is the numpad the key 0 is harder to hit because the large button is replaced by 2 buttons, 0 and 000. This gets very annoying. The numpad does have a built in calculator though and can be turned on and off. This kit makes a great media center desktop. I love it and this is the best kit you can find except for the little annoying 0 key.

Lots of pros, few cons,

I was a little worried at first that I would have trouble typing on this keyboard after using regular "full travel" keyboards--this keyboard reminds me more of a laptop keyboard than anything else, but I shouldn't have been concerned. Unlike laptop keyboards, the keys are placed where you'd expect them to be, not inset 4 inches, on the other side of a touchpad.
The numeric keypad with media control is the coolest. Thing. Ever. I found the wireless range to be acceptable, and the setup was painless. I didn't read the instructions (on purpose) to see if I could get through it on intuition, and I found the entire process (including the mouse battery installation) fit my expectations. The mouse really isn't too small--it's smaller than I was expecting, but it's not too small. (Could be big mice are overrated, anyway.) I found that it fits my hand perfectly, and has acceptable mass and traction for an optical. The 800-DPI aspect is a bonus; I'm used to 600 DPI mice. Without a doubt this is eye-candy, but it backs up the good looks by working exactly the way it should, and that makes it hard to beat. Yeah, price. Always price--but in this case, I think it's worth it.

The keyboard and media pad are simply awesome. I love them. The keyboard is one of the best I've ever typed on. That being said, I don't much care for the mouse. I am only using this is as a desktop set, and have no need for a laptop sized mouse. So, this set loses one star due to the mouse. I realize it is being marketed as a set you would bring with you on the road so a laptop mouse would be preferable. Frankly, I don't understand that marketing strategy. If someone were going to carry around a full sized keyboard and the media pad, I don't see the harm in supplying a full sized mouse. After all, this is supposed to be about increasing the comfort of laptop users. Personally, I find laptop mice too small, and not functional enough. Fortunately, my logitech mx1000 works perfectly with the receiver for this set.
This diNovo loses another star with me because it wouldn't work with my iogear mini view III KVM. Logitech doesn't offer support for KVM switches, so I shouldn't be too surprised. However, the bluetooh diNovo works perfectly with this same KVM. This is a really big issues with me as I am constantly switching back and forth between computers. I rely heavily on my KVM. Due to this, I will likely return this product. Despite those problems, I am still giving this product three stars. The styling and feel of the keyboard and media pad are just that good. My advice is that you have a single computer set up and you're looking for an attractive and quality keyboard, then this is the product for you. Also, if you're anything like me, pick up the mx1000 or any Logitech RF mouse that you can get to work with the diNovo.

A perfectly executed design! Great key touch, the mouse and number pad have power switches to conserve battery life. Be sure to have the latest BIOS on your PC or the keyboard won't be recognized at boot. large, accessible reset buttons. The batteries on the mouse load from the top of the unit so you don't have to endure the red light during installation. The keypad has date, time, and temperture readings. The mouse is small in my hand, but perfect for my wife and daughter.
It's a real leap in design and execution.

Great at first....poor quality over time,

The mouse is fine and the calculator is also fine (thus 2 stars instead of 1). I'll keep using those. The keyboard was great at first, then the space bar started getting finicky (after 3-4 months of daily use) and I'd have to hit it a couple of times to get it to work. Around the same time, keys started popping off under normal use and carrying the thing around in a knapsack. After reattaching the X key a few times with the help of a paperclip and lots of patience, I thought I had the hang of it. All seemed well. Then the R key came off today. A half hour of trying to put it back on knocked the E key off, and now the keyboard is in the garbage. Good riddance.

Solid keyboard, great feel, but aimed more at laptop users,

In my ongoing quest for the perfect keyboard, I tried this diNovo (this is the regular RF wireless model, not the poorly reviewed bluetooth model). My goal was a sturdy keyboard with excellent tactile feedback and relatively silent operation, no trailing wires, with little interest in gimmicks such as purpose-specific buttons.
As expected with a Logitech product, setup is a breeze and updates for the software (hefty 40-50MB downloads) are available from Logitech's website. The software is intuitive and easy to use and is for both mouse and keyboard. The software also reports battery levels for all three pieces. Its installation will uninstall older 'mouseware' software if you were using a Logitech mouse and will control older mice as well. Keyboard battery life appears excellent after two months of sporadic usage. For some reason, caps-lock and num-lock don't have indicator lights on the keyboard and when toggled, instead flash a message on the display via the software. The keyboard is split into two pieces, the main keyboard and a numeric keypad. There's a soft cloth bag for carrying the keypad, which oddly enough has an ambient temperature readout. The main keyboard has a crisp, firm feel reminiscent of a laptop's keyboard, and true to that, is a little smaller than a standard PC keyboard (ie, one that might come with a new Dell), but not as tightly spaced as a laptop keyboard. The spacing of the keys took a day or two to get used to, but works fairly well. Notably, the backspace key is a little smaller than usual and the delete key larger than usual. The built-in wrist-rest area is just a little too wide, making it hard to use this keyboard with a normal wrist-rest. The keyboard is also very flat even when propped up on its legs, I'd be much happier with it if it sloped upwards a little bit more. The included mouse is squat and compact and not terribly ergonomic, probably most suitable for the business traveler concerned about weight. I used my MX1000 instead. I realized how much this product was aimed at the laptop user when I packed this keyboard (with USB micro-receiver and no numpad) for a recent trip. It fits inside a carry-on bag! So, if you are in a crunch for physical desk space, like the feedback of a firm laptop keyboard, or travel with a keyboard frequently, this unit is an excellent choice for you. Otherwise you might, like me, love the feel of it but find the form a little aggravating. The separate keypad just gets in the way and more often than not I just put it away. I give this keyboard 4 stars because I like the feel and design of the keyboard, and the software is excellent, but Logitech should include a better mouse in their top-end series, the separate numpad is of dubious value, and the ergonomics of the main keyboard are lacking.

This keyboard is decent, but the spacebar sticks really bad. It is really annoying when you are typing really fast and the space bar doesn't register. I wouldn't care if another key stuck that was less used, but the space bar is one of the most important keys on a keyboard, and if it doesn't work properly then the keyboard is useless. I would go with the Logitech S510 instead, that keyboard has the best tactile feel of all of the keyboards I have used, and I have used a lot. Good luck in your keyboard search.

I bought this for my main computer to reduce the wiring clutter on my desk, after reading a number of reviews. I've had it about a week.
The keyboard is fantastic - very nice feel, and has a feel very similar to that of my laptop. It is indeed low profile - very nearly flat. The mouse is also good, although with the batteries noticably heavier than I had been used to. I don't use the numeric keypad, in fact one of the reasons for choosing this model was that I could get the keypad off the desk. Would have been nice if they had offered a model without the keypad entirely. Both have an upscale, hi-tech appearance - and I really like the absence of wires. Would be hard to go back to wired keyboard and mouse now. Installation and pairing was quick and easy, problem. (Running XP on a [...] old Dell desktop).

Easy on the eyes, easy on the hands,
This review is from: Logitech diNovo Cordless Desktop (Personal Computers)
I've had the diNovo wireless set for about half a year now. After using a laptop for the past five years I felt very uncomfortable with the standard desktop keyboards and their deep rigid strokes. The diNovo felt great on the hands with their shallow spring-loaded keys.
Design-wise, the diNovo looks fabulous. The keyboard is very low profile and is dressed in a simple two-tone scheme (silver/black). One of the things that I liked the best is the fact that it doesn't have a whole bunch of useless keys like almost every other keyboard out there. I don't need keys that change my MSN status, and I don't need keys that open up website shortcuts. The diNovo is as a result very clean and the extra buttons are for the most part low-key and unobtrusive. Unlike most other upscale keyboards, the diNovo is also squarish and symmetrical, rather than having curved corners. It matches well with other visible hardware like a LCD monitor (also having sharp corners). People who've seen it had nothing but praises. The detachable number pad is also very useful and frees up some space as it can be placed elsewhere. Reception for me has been problem free. Key strokes and mouse movements have been clear up to and probably surpassing six feet. As far as battery life goes, I haven't changed the batteries in the keyboard and the media pad since I bought them, and I change the batteries in the mouse roughly once every two to three weeks. On the negative side, some of the keys are not very sensitive and require a lot more force to get recognition. The control key and the spacebar are the two most important ones that suffer from this. I end up having to delete back to a word that didn't get separated from the previous one. Lately I've habitualized and now use more pressure. Also, a wrist rest is built into the keyboard and I find it very annoying, as I never used to use one while typing. I wish the thing was detachable. One more thing. The thermometer built into the number pad can never manage to get the temperature right. It's always a few degrees Celsius too high and a Logitech rep replied saying that it "measures local temperature rather than ambient room temperature". Too bad. Overall, a good product. |
