3.0 out of 5 stars Best I can find
I love laptop keyboards (good ones, that is.) This is the closest and best I can find to a laptop-style flat keyboard for my desktop. It's nice and flat, with short key travel (but not too short.)

The only problem is that the frame is perfectly rigid, and thus hard on the fingers. Many laptops have a slight flex to the whole surface... most people probably...

I bought this keyboard to replace my giant Logitech multimedia keyboard that I bought a few years ago. I realized that I never use the extra keys and the fancy rounded edges just take up extra space.

There seems to be a few versions of the Logitech UltraX. The one that I received looks like the picture, but the backspace key is the wider kind that takes up two spaces.

Pros:
- Slim profile thanks to the laptop-style keys.
- Very small foot print. My desk feels a lot bigger with this keyboard.
- It's just a good, solid, standard keyboard: wide backspace key, no weird F-lock button, no extra scroll wheels or crazy stuff like that.

Cons:
- The positioning feels slightly wider even though the keyboard is smaller. I can't quite figure it out, but I noticed that I can't reach the End key with my pinkie anymore.
- The laptop-style keys take a little getting used to if you're coming from a standard keyboard.

For the price, it's excellent. Right now, it's $25.45 so even non-Prime members can get free shipping on this.

The only problem is that the frame is perfectly rigid, and thus hard on the fingers. Many laptops have a slight flex to the whole surface... most people probably think it's a bad thing, but I find it cushions your finger pecks just enough to make it more comfortable to use. This doesn't have that flex, so sometimes my fingertips hurt after a long typing session. I wish I could just "type lighter", but when I try I find it hard and I'm not sure why... something about this keyboard just isn't conducive to that.

The Logitech Ultra X-Flat is the standard issue keyboard at the large technology firm where I work.

At first, I wasn't used to this keyboard. It feels more like it belongs on a particularly nice laptop than a keyboard, although it's probably slightly larger than that on a typical laptop. But after four months of use, I just love how it feels. It's light and the keys are very easy to press. Just recently, I purchased my own for home use.

I did experience one minor issue. After a week of use, one of the keys started to stick once in a while, if only for a moment. The problem resolved itself after about a week -- I have no idea how, but it simply stopped. (Maybe I had to "break" the keyboard in.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Keyboard, May 26, 2008
This review is from: Logitech 967568-0403 OEM Usb Ultra X-Flat Spill Resistant Media Keyboard - Black/Silver (Personal Computers)
This keyboard comes highly recommended from someone who has broken his fair share.

I was looking for a no-frills keyboard which will take constant use, has a decent tactile response and doesn't involve batteries or radios. This one fits the bill perfectly. In particular this one has a standard key layout without odd arrow key arrangements, and has only a small inobtrusive row of special function (mute, e-mail, www, etc) keys. I was a little nervous about how well the "laptop style" keys would hold but, but a few weeks of constant abuse haven't slowed this keyboard down at all. As usual, logitech knows what they're doing.

Nice, snappy keys on this. A full sized keyboard with laptop keys -- I've wanted a keyboard like this for years, and this satisfies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Keyboard, July 7, 2008

This keyboard is a good standard keyboard for an excellent price.
You can find this on Logitech's OEM and System builder site at the following URL as of 7/7/2008.

As the logitech spec page states, this is a very slim keyboard, and it emulates the feel of laptop keyboards. This keyboard makes it very easy to reach high typing speeds. The number keypad is also very useful if you use this keyboard on a docking station for your laptop.

This keyboard also works without having to install any drivers, the few keys that it does have on top(media keys), work on Windows XP without any additional software, and because they are minimal and kept on the upper edge of the keyboard they are not intrusive or bothersome.

I am typically not a fan of keyboards with too many additional functions and keys, in fact, if it were up to me I would be using my Original IBM 101 key buckling spring keyboard without any windows keys on it. However I am weary of carpal tunnel syndrome since I typically type all day at work. Perhaps DasKeyboards will come up with a USB Version of the Original IBM 101 Key Keyboard.

I've had this for a few days now and it works nicely. My main observation is that it feels a lot like a laptop keyboard. The keys are small and shallow. It woks just fine and I've had no problems with it but if you don't like laptop keyboard you might want to try something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, especially for the price., February 25, 2009
This review is from: Logitech 967568-0403 OEM Usb Ultra X-Flat Spill Resistant Media Keyboard - Black/Silver (Personal Computers)
Let me start by saying that I was afraid of getting the keyboard as it was shown in the picture (with an L-shaped Enter key). I made the jump after reading the last review (below mine) saying the keyboard Amazon ships has a "normal sized" Enter key, not the L-shaped one. Thankfully that reviewer was right, as mine also has a "normal sized" Enter key. So if you're on the fence because of that, I hope my experience helps you with your decision.

Also, people have complained about the lack of volume up/down buttons where the hotkeys are, and that they couldn't change any of them since they were set by the driver. That's not quite true... The keyboard doesn't come with a CD, so it's just using the defualt (uncustomizable) keyboard driver, which is why people say they can't change them... BUT, if you download the iTouch driver from Logitech's site, it will let you remap some of the hotkeys. The iTouch driver lets you re-configure the keys to launch programs or execute key combos that you want. Utilizing a free program like Global Audio Control (GAC), which redirects key combos to perform actions (like volume up/down), you can effectively reprogram otherwise pointless hotkeys to do any action you want!

I'll wrap up by saying that for the price, you can't go wrong with this keyboard. It looks great, and has a unique feel that's usually reserved for laptops. It's going to take some getting used to on my part, since my fingers have grown accustomed to the feel of raised keys, but I had no problems playing TF2 last night, so I'm not worried.

I've been using this keyboard for a few months now, and this keyboard is everything I've wanted. It has a few special keys and that's good enough. Many keyboards these days have so many special keys that turn into clutters and take up space, while we will never use them.

The size of the keyboard is 18" x 6" and has a normal rectangular shape, so its footprint is minimal, which is good. It also has a substantial amount of weight which makes it feel solid and not to glide around on desk.

The feel of typing on this keyboard is awesome. The travel distance is almost identical to most laptop keyboards. The feedback is good and response is a mix between crisp and mushy without being too much of both. I actually tried the new Illuminated Keyboard and Dinovo Notebook... even though they are more expensive, I prefer the feel of this keyboard! The PerfectStroke on those other keyboards actually makes the keys have a bit longer travel than laptop keys. Maybe some people like their keys like so, but I don't.

I got one at home, and as a software developer on the job, I got one at work too! I have gone through almost all the Logitech keyboards over the years(and Saitek's too) and I am confident to say that this is the best keyboard I've used thus far, and for the price.

If any, the only gripe I have would be that it lacks a wrist rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Keyboard EVER!, June 13, 2008

Admittedly, I'm weird. I prefer typing on a notebook keyboard over a regular keyboard. I HATE the feeling of those big squishy buttons on regular keyboards. I don't know why, just do. I also find that I can type faster on the low profile keys of a notebook keyboard.

So when I found this keyboard, I bought it to try out. It is AMAZING! I now have one on all my computers at home, and at work.

Also, I'm VERY hard on my keyboards. I type hard, and tend to beat my keyboard when I get frustrated at the programs I'm writing. So I bought 4 extras to keep on hand at all times so I could quickly replace it if I ever broke it. Well, 3 years later, it's still working great! Not a single problem with it. I even hit it so hard once it broke BOTH feet off the back of it... but it just kept on going without a hitch. I really think this thing is indestructible!

Great investment!
