I am a huge logitech fan. However, I have to say this is the first logitech camera I am seriously diappointed with. I own the logitech Quickcam Traveller, Quickcam 3000, and this Clicksmart 510. All work great on XP except the Clicksmart 510.

If you don't have a digital camera, have no immediately plan to invest a big chunk of money into "real" digital camera, but you're looking to buy a webcam. If the descriptions fit you, then this handy little gizmo provides a perfect solution for all your imaging needs. As a webcam, it provides solid quality and idiot-proof usability of a traditional Logitech webcam. You just plug in the USB cable, install the software, and up you go (no extra power source is needed for the webcam feature). I tested mine with MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger, and it worked just fine with both programs. As a digital cam, all you have to do is yank out the USB cable, load 4 AAA batteries, and point-and-shoot. The bundled 8MB flash stores up to 121 1,280 x 960 or 640 x 480 still images, 184 320X240 images, or a number of video clips (the amount of video can be stored depends on resolution and the length of the clip). When you're finished, plug the USB cable back, with one push of the "Sync" button, everything on the flash are downloaded to your computer. It's that simple. No fuss at all. The stills produced by the camera are, by no means, professional. They are not even print-quality, for that matter. But the pictures are good enough for emails or webpages.

I hear people complaining that the camera does not have a LCD display, the resolution for stills is too low (1280x960 is achieved by software enhancement, native max. res. is only 640x480), no zooming, and things of that sort. But come on, you can't really expect a 100 dollar camera performs like a 500 digital camera. In short, this is a camera for those who need a decent webcam and also a simple point-and-shoot for occasional low-quality stills. For those who want a high quality, high-end digital camera, have 800 bucks ready and look elsewhere. For those who already have a high-end digital camera but need a webcam, also move on, there are much cheaper webcams that perform at par with ClickSmart 510. I hope this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars New to Digital Photo, April 20, 2002

As an advanced SLR amateur, I was looking for a product which
would provide: webcam, medium/low resolution still pictures, and
videos with audio too. I discovered this at FNAC in Grenoble (F) during Christmas time and finally purchased here in Canada.
It did exactly what I wanted: it's *not* a substitute for my NIKONs or pocket ROLLEI, but it's tremendous fun using it!!!
Video quality is good, audio is excellent. Colours are generally good, but avoid direct sunlight. I haven't taken a lot the still images, as video is indeed more fun. I purchased a
64MB memory card, to replace the standard 8MB, and it works!
I can shoot mini-videos for more than 20min overall.
The only negative point is the flash: too strong and little or no usage.
WebCam works fine and it's great fun to communicate with distant
relatives.
The software included is very useful for linking together your
small videos or add some titles.
In the end: if this is your first experience with digicam don't
hesitate. Don't expect results similar to good point-and-shoot 35mm cameras, but you can see your little
creations right away back home on your PC! And kids love it too.

You can use the clicksmart for just about everything else but MSN Messenger. It freezes everytime within a min. or so. I have done a clean install of XP and still nothing. Finally wrote Microsoft, they say it's not compatible at all with MSN, and logitech still claims it is. I have another friend with same camera and same problem. Don't waste your money on this camera if you use XP. Any other OS, should work great if you like to use MSN messenger. Also, won't work with yahoo either. It freezes and gets errors. Hope you find this helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Webcam! So-So Digital Camera., January 2, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Logitech ClickSmart 510 Dual-Mode Camera (Personal Computers)
The ClickSmart 510 is a very good webcam and is an okay digital camera. Now don't expect your pictures to be great quality because it is only 1.3 megapixel, but it's good enough for beginners or people who just want to play around with a camera. It also has a built in microphone and has a video feature.

I haven't really used the video feature so i guess i can't tell you much on that. I think you can take 30 second videos or maybe longer.

The webcam feature is very nice and is probably one of the best webcams on the market especially for its price.

The microphone is a nice added bonus.

The digital camera feature is so-so. However for 120 bucks it's great because the webcam alone is worth that price. If you're expecting a great digital camera you'll be disappointed, but it is decent quality.

All in all, if you're looking to buy a webcam, look no further because this is the product for you. It's a great webcam for a great price with the added bonus of a digital camera, microphone, and short videos. If you're looking for a digital camera I'd recommend shelling out the extra cash and buying a "true" digital camera because as a digital camera this product won't really cut it unless you don't mind so-so quality pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Webcam, October 20, 2002

This review is from: Logitech ClickSmart 510 Dual-Mode Camera (Personal Computers)
I purchased this camera at a local electronics store....It was on sale for 99 bucks and for the price it was well worth it...As a webcam image quality is good, with smooth clear video which I like more than my Creative webcam. As a digital camera it's not quite as good, with images coming out so-so, but not terrible either. For the price you can't expect it to take the best looking pictures as a more expensive professional type digital camera would, also it is only 1.3 megapixels, but i'm happy with it and recommend it to beginners who want to buy a digital camera or someone looking for a good webcam and don't want to spend lots of cash.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good....if you CANNOT spend more than $150, November 20, 2001
This review is from: Logitech ClickSmart 510 Dual-Mode Camera (Personal Computers)
Picture quality is ok. Ease of use and webcam abilities are excellent. This is great if you cannot afford to spend $300+ on a real digital camera.

So, 2 stars if you are expecting a good digital camera. 5 stars in the 'get what you pay for catagory'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera for the money!, August 14, 2002

I just bought the Logitech ClickSmart 510 Digital Camera and I think it's great. It takes great pictures for the price. If you are a true photographer I would NOT reccomend this camera to you. This camera is simply good for a first digital camera or people looking to take pictures to email or post on a website. It also doubles as a webcam. It's quality from that stand point is pretty nice. It also stores up to 90 seconds of low res. video which is good for capturing the amusment park ride or a trip down the waterslide. The button on the front of the camera is great for uploading pictures in a snap. On the downside, the camera doesn't have a zoom feature or a picture preview but other than that I can say this is a great camera for the money, and I am very happy with my purchuse. :-D

4.0 out of 5 stars Good multi-use digital camera/webcam, December 2, 2001
By
This review is from: Logitech ClickSmart 510 Dual-Mode Camera (Personal Computers)
This camera is great for entry level use in digital photography, the pictures are of adequate quality. You can use it for 90 sec's of digital video as well and when attached to your computer acts as a webcam (great for family if you have high-speed internet access) Bottom line is, for (the price) don't expect much in quality of photos, but plenty of features.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great camera for the price but..., August 16, 2003
By
alchemist42 "alchemist42" (Athens, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech ClickSmart 510 Dual-Mode Camera (Personal Computers)
This is a very good webcam. I love the fact that, unlike almost all other webcams, you can detach it from the base and use it as an actual portable digital camera. This is a very nice feature, unfortunately, the image qualty is far inferior to many other digital cameras. It has good webcam quality, but your average webcam generally has a lower quality than your average regular digital camera. The audio quality is very good, and the video quality is mediocre. It is, though, far and away better than anything else I have seen in its price range.

I read a lot of the other reviews about this camera and there were a few complaints about the software installation. I have a Windows XP computer and I don't think I have ever installed anything this easily. All you have to do is follow the instructions. There are 3 steps.

1) Insert the batteries and SmartMedia card that come in the package. There are pictures so even if you don't know the + side of a battery from the - side, you can see quite clearly what needs to be done.
2) Stick in the CD and follow the instructions.
3) When it tells you to, plug the camera into the USB port on the computer.

That's it. It worked on the 1st try without any problems. It took less than 10 minutes from unpacking the box until I was snapping pictures.

There are a few other interesting functions, like you can set it up as a motion detector. Then it will record anything that happens in front of it and it will not record when there is no motion. Good for spying on the babysitter to make sure they aren't doing anything unsavory!

Getting images out of the camera and onto the computer is a breeze. Just plug it in and push one button on the front of the camera. All the images are quickly downloaded into the computer so you can see them, delete them if you don't like 'em or put into your folders, email to friends, or burn to CD.

My main complaint is that there is no display on the camera to see the picture you just took. You have to wait until you get back to your computer to see the pictures. But then, it is still an improvement over having to get film developed!

Overall, this is a pretty solid camera with some very nice functions for the price. You can get better quality cameras out there, but you will probably have to pay double what this one costs. I wouldn't recommend using this one for your wedding photos, but it is great for around the house shots, web cam, video conferencing, and quick-and-dirty snapshots for showing off your stuff or selling it all on ebay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great computer camera, little less on stand alone, September 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Logitech ClickSmart 510 Dual-Mode Camera (Personal Computers)
This camera takes great photos when hooked up to your PC. The video output is great and the self adjustment for low lighting allows you to sit in a room lit with table lamps and still appear brightly lit with good detail. It works very well with modem hookups for conferencing or instant messaging with video. However, when hooked in with DSL this camera flys. The microphone picks up sound very well.
