GREAT Mouse unless you don't understand how to use it.,
By Brian (IA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech MX 610 Cordless Laser Mouse (931350-0403) (Personal Computers)
Ok, I've seen a lot of complaints about the Email and IM buttons on the MX 610. First, I don't see how these buttons should make it or break it for you anyway. If you're looking for a reliable mouse with lots of customization options, then you shouldn't even care about the Email and IM buttons. But, if you are concerned, as some seem to be, then simply download the latest driver, restart your computer and everything should work just fine...that's what I experience anyway. I own my own business and constantly receive email. Let me tell you, the flashing email indicator is a nuisance that I quickly shut off the option and recustomized the button to do something more productive.
I also want to correct another complaint. Someone mentioned you can't customize the Email and IM buttons - that's completely false. You can customize ALL 12-buttons - that's a FACT! Ok, here's why I gave this mouse 5-stars. The ergonomics of the MX 610 should be the standard for all right-handed mice, it just feels natural in your hand. The weight with the AA batteries installed gives it a solid feel. 12-button customization makes my computer tasks so much faster and simpler. I do a lot of copy/pasting, minimizing/switching multiple windows, referencing key websites, and the MX 610 does it all! I use 2 easy to reach buttons for the copy/paste features, I use the middle wheel button to minimize my windows, I use the left/right motion of the center wheel for switching windows quickly, and even have a button that pulls up a customized window (that I created with the included software) that I can select programs and websites from! Anyone that gives the MX 610 a low score is simply not using this mouse for productive purposes, or simply doesn't understand how to customize it to fit your needs and style. One last thing: I have a lot of wireless products nearby and this mouse hasn't hickuped yet. The wireless technology in the MX 610 is superior and I can see why Logitech focuses it's media attention on it.

Not a bad option,

I've owned this mouse for nearly two years now. Every since I got a Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3200, my MX610 has been sitting in my desk drawer. But it was good while it lasted. The mouse flies smoothly and effortlessly, untethered to a cord or limited by an optical sensor. The laser is awesome, and though this was one of the first widely-sold mice to use laser optics, it's still great. The review that mentioned the e-mail and instant messaging buttons not working was from 2005; there are no driver problems any more.
The ergonomics of this mouse are great; I have a pretty large hand, and the mouse feels like a perfect fit; my girlfriend has a smaller hand and she also likes my mouse. The scroll wheel works as it should , and the volume control, browser buttons, and e-mail/IM buttons all function fine. THe battery indicator is somewhat annoying, as it does not indicate the battery level like the MX1000 does; also, when the battery gets low, it flashes red continuously. Actually, I generally use the mouse for an extra week after it flashes red, so the flashing is very annoying. The MX610's use of AA batteries instead of a rechargeable battery is also a downside. Nevertheless, this mouse is not indestructible. About one month ago, the mouse's performance started to decrease. The batteries lasted shorter, and I had to replace them with new ones more and more often. Also, when the battery level started getting low, the tracking started malfunctioning, and mouse skipped all over the screen. Sometimes, blowing on the laser helped; other times, it didn't. So after about a year and half, my MX 610 was effectively useless. Nonetheless, while the mouse worked, it was great. Don't expect these new Logitech mice to last forever like the wired optical mice or even the balled-mice did. If you want an indestructible mouse (or at least one that will last a long time), get a Microsoft wired optical mouse. But if you're looking for a wireless laser mouse, consider this mouse or the MX1000. The MX Revolution's life is too short: about 3 months before a moving part breaks. If you're curious, the mouse that comes with the Cordless Desktop MX3200 is very similar to the MX610, though the e-mail and AIM buttons have been removed, the volume control has changed into a zoom function (to match the keyboard), and the color is slightly different. It might be alright though: I found that I had to "remember" to use the extra mouse buttons. Lastly, another advantage of this mouse is that it has a left-handed partner. Overall, recommended.

Good mouse, but don't count on the LEDs being useful,

Features
The big selling point of this mouse are the two notification LED buttons, one for email and one for IM. These let you get a light notification when you get an email or IM from someone you enter on the whitelist in the SetPoint software. - Email and IM client compatibility is very low; specifically Thunderbird isn't supported for email and Trillian isn't supported for IM. Thus, I don't get any use out of the lights. - Logitech's SetPoint software lets you customize the actions taken by most button clicks, but for some reason doesn't open up all buttons to all customizations. In order to "unlock" all options, I suggest you Google search for "UberOptions" and install the new device profiles. - After installing UberOptions, I was able to remap the Email and IM buttons to something useful. Wireless The wireless capability on this mouse is usually very smooth, even under high CPU load. However, when I try to use this mouse in one of our conference rooms I get very stuttery motion (possibly due to the WiFi antennaes that service that room.) I don't have any wireless problems at my desk or at home. Comfort The shape of this mouse has grown on me since I got it, and I now find it very comfortable. I like it better than comparable Microsoft products from an ergonomic point of view. As a bonus, there is now a left-handed version of this mouse available. Price - I purchased the MX 610 mouse while it was on a rebate deal. - At [...]. - At normal price, I'd pass this one over. If you don't need the wireless, a wired MX518 is a better deal. Overall, this is a decent mouse after you install UberOptions, and if you don't mind not using the LED lights. I would not pay more than $40, though, so watch for a rebate.

This mouse is great. Movement has never been so precise, and you'll definitely notice a change if you're upgrading from an optical. This mouse is also an extremely comfortable, but for right handers only.
The buttons on the mouse are well place come in handy, especially the volume controls and the forward/back buttons. However, a problem does arise when trying to configure the email and IM notification buttons. They do work properly, but only if you use outlook as your mail client and MSN or Yahoo as your IM client. If not, you're pretty much stuck and the lighting on the buttons is useless. The powering system is intelligent, but flawed if you are a desktop user. The mouse does shut itself down when you power down your PC, or if your PC goes into sleep/hibernation. If you are a user that consistently keeps their pc on for a long time, you're stuck once again. Needless to say that the life on the mouse is pretty long anyways. I've had the mouse for about two months and the batteries are still good. I rarely shut down my pc so battery life isn't really a problem. Overall a very good and inexpensive mouse when considering all of the features it offers.

This mouse has some problems.,
This review is from: Logitech MX 610 Cordless Laser Mouse (931350-0403) (Personal Computers)
This is an okay mouse. But here are the problems:
1) The email and im buttons only work with a few software products. I use Thunderbird and the email button doesn't work. 2) I've had the mouse for 4 months and am already on my third set of batteries! This mouse does not save you battery power. 3) It's become very 'figity' lately - jumping around on the screen sometimes and very sensitive to double clicks. 4) The SetPoint software from Logitech is buggy. Each time I start my PC it tells me that I need to reinstall SetPoint (which I have no to no avail).

I am a mouse freak - have a job that requires me to be on my computer all day long. Just got this mouse a couple of days ago. Have been able to get the Email and the IM buttons working. The email button only work with Outlook and Outlook express. The best part of this mouse is the comfortable shape. It is also truly cordless. Most cordless products come with a receiver that has a long cord. The 610 just has a very small receiver.

I think the mouse is outstanding. I find it to be very confortable and fits my hand well. I especially like the small USB transmitter with no cables. It hides itself so well compared to my last one that had to be on the same plane as the mouse. I just stuck this in a slot hidden in the front of my computer under my desk and it works perfectly. I don't play many games on my PC, so I can't speak to its performance in that respect. I tried one game and it worked fine. I've had absolutely no problems with it, it always tracks perfectly for me, wakes up perfectly, and simply has no problems in my use of it.
For normal operation with scroll wheel & back & forward buttons, you don't even need to instal the software that came with it unless you want the right-left scroll, configurable behavior for when you press the wheel as a button, and the email & IM lights. Current drivers are easily downloaded rom Logitech directly, so you don't need to use the CD provided (some other review had indicated the original software might have had a few problems). Personally, I don't need it for email or IM lights and I don't use right/left tilt on the wheel, so I uninstalled the software and use it as a nice cordless wheel mouse.

Since I bought this mouse my computer experience has changed. I feel more comfortable with this mouse than the microsoft wireless explorer. The MX has volume control, e-mail and IM button. I haven't used the "notice lights" but I am very happy and satisfied with it. The accuracy is astonishing. It really follows your hand. It has better accuracy than the explorer. The explorer requieres a big communication/antena base. The MX uses just a USB connector. I got a USB extension cable though to keep it close to the area where the mouse is and reduce potential interference. The design is somewhat similar to the explorer, but my hand feels more comfortable on this. It turns on and off by itself. It uses two AA batteries every 2 or 3 months. With this mouse I don't miss the explorer!!!!!!!

I have an older ergonomic logitech mouse and it was showing it's age --slow, hard to clean trackball. I do not use the gaming features -- this is for my office. It is very comfortable and very responsive ---- I am going to purchase 2 more for my other PCs. The longer battery life (sleep mode)is a big plus

Software issue,
This review is from: Logitech MX 610 Cordless Laser Mouse (931350-0403) (Personal Computers)
The mouse is great. Feels great. However, the software won't work if you use a KVM switch. After you switch to another computer then return to the other one, the software "SetPoint" fails to response to any special assigned commands, such as scroll, adjust the volume, mute, etc. Unless you reboot the machine.
Logitech's website recommends that you directly plug the USB recevier to the PC not through a KMV switch. |
